  • I love this picture. It makes me want to break out some of my grandfather in Bensonhurst brooklyn
  • thanks flexi :)

  • wow, stacey... thanks for sharing! what a great photo!! this image isn't nearly as old, but still is quite a landmark event. my great uncle was a motorcycle cop at the 78th precinct when this happened, and he often tells the story about that day. the photo comes from NYC-architecture.com.

  • Great photo. Is that the crash that happened on Vanderbilt? What year was that again do you remember?
  • it was 1960, i think. it crashed on sterling place and 7th ave.

  • and the taboo after 30 years is over...tragic event...there's a new building on the site.

Thoughts on this from the peanut gallery?
  • Has anyone been to the Brooklyn Historical Society? If so, how is their picture collection? My dad and I are trying to find a pic of my Great-Grandfather's garage that was on Bergen.
  • If you have the address and block & lot, you can order a tax photo on nyc.gov. Most of the photos were taken in the 1940s-1960's for tax assessment. We got ours of our house. $25 and it took about a week...all on-line. :)

  • Subject: '' Cheapy's ''

East New York candy shop near PS 174 where I attended grade school as a child:

Back in the 50s/60s, Brooklyn remained largely segregated and, though I hate to say it, race relations were never that good. But ''Cheapy'' treated everybody, regardless of race or whatever, real good. All of the Black and Latino kids really liked him. For a nickel you could buy a full handful of candy and he had real good stuff. I remember when we used to say, "let's go to Cheapy's after school" and several of us would congregate there. And he never chased us out!

Cheapy was a good guy and I bet he's making lots of angels smile in the Heavenly Kingdom above.
  • Hello prodigalson

here exactly was this candy store, I grew up in brownsville on Hinsdale and Livonia.

  • Hi barryg,

Cheapy's was on Dumont Avenue across the way from PS 174 - either on Georgia or Alabama Avenue. You sure could buy lots of good stuff for pennies back then!
  • Hi prodigalson,

Looks familiar, but 55 years of pointless and useless knowledge can get in the way LOL.

Brooklyn is still the world, second to none! :D
  • prodigalson,
    Hello prodigalson

I grew up in Brownsville in the late 50's and early 60's and after taking a better look at this I can say for sure is not the cheapies I know and remember, I just do not remember the fence going north , I do remember a barber shop where the wise guys hung out I remember because I shined shoes on Livonia Ave. in front of Fortinoffs and all the guys were always trying to get the spot in the Barber shop because the tips were good ](*,) I hope IM not wrong . Chucky

PS. Stacy, thanx for starting this photo thread :D
  • I have finally started to go through my mom's old pictures and I came across this one of Wyckoff Street between Bond and Nevins. I posted it because first, I am amazed at how the street looked without any greenery. If you walk down Wyckoff now there are trees lining both sides as well as green areas inside people areaways.

  • NICE pic Stacey.

(Glad to see Brooklynian back up. I tried logging in like last week & it was down)
  • I know of at least three movie theaters that were in Bensonhurst that have closed over the years. Does anyone have pictures of:
    The Benson (Now a Rite-Aid)
The Oriental (Now a Mandees) or
    The Deluxe (razed)?
    Thanks

  • I hope this post will not be considered imperimissable as it relates to my old church in East New York and is not a marketing or social event ploy.

Our Lady of Loreto is in danger of being razed much like the old school that was next door. Some folks are still trying to save this relic as it was a great contributor to the community's vitality:
