Music is what we like to play . . . — Brooklynian

Music is what we like to play . . .

In need of weekend navel gazing, with a backbeat?
Relax with the blogo-rific lazy music meme that's making the rounds . . .

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

The rules:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc.)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...

here's mine

Opening Credits:
The Pogues "Gentleman Soldier"
(no fekkin' idea what this means. My second round substitution would be "Mushaboom (Mocky Mix)" by Feist)

Waking Up:
Michael Franti “O My God”
(nice, gentle…)

First Day at School:
Johnny Cash “Katey Too”

Falling In Love:
Pablo Milanés & César Isella “Pobre Del Cantor”
(figures, it needs translation ; )

Fight Song:
Bob Marley “Kinky Reggae”

Breaking Up:
Funkadelic “Funk Gets Stronger (Part 1)”

Prom:
Tammy Wynette “Apartment No. 9”
(I would have preferred Your Good Girl Is Gonna Go Bad, but whatever. We ended up at The Eagle, a gay leather bar in DC anyway)

Life:
Bob Marley “Could You Be Loved”
(Score! I feel hope.)

Mental Breakdown:
The Pogues “Medley: The Recruiting Sergeant/The Rocky Road To Dublin/The Galway Races”
( ‘kaaaay. Some sort of circular Pogues theme at work . . .)

Driving:
Sam Manning's Orchestra “I’m Going Your Way”
(What sweetness. I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to this old time Trinidad tune)

Flashback:
Michael Franti & Spearhead “Pray For Grace” (Manu Chao mix)
WHY must I feel like this today? Indeed…

Getting Back Together:
Nazaré Pereira “Caixa De Sol” off Beleza Tropical: Brazil Classics 1
(Again, the Latin Love. It means Box of the Sun, sorta)

Wedding:
Blackalicious “Making Progress”
(Yeah, we gotta make it last . . .
Wish the guy didn’t sound like Will Smith on the rap)

Birth of Child:
Belle & Sebastian “This Is Just A Modern Rock Song”
(I love this game!)

Final Battle:
Outkast “A Life In The Day Of Benjamin André”
(Where I marry Erika Badu...?)

Death Scene:
Bob Marley & The Wailers “Rastaman Live Up!”
(like the man says, “don’t be afraid of the vulture”)

Funeral Song
Slavic Soul Party! “Indinski”
(It gets very perky, in a dancing towards the great beyond kinda way. Blow that clarinet, bang that drum…)

End Credits:

Johnny Cash “Like The 309”
(Put me and my box on the 309 . . .)

Carl Hancock Rux “I Recall (There I Am)”

Outkast “Happy Valentine’s Day”
YEAH, finally something to let you dance out of the theater with a funky heart

I get a few extra songs on the credits, cause there was alot of foley work and no animals were harmed in the making of . . .

  • Wow, that was fun (and also tremendously creepy)! Apparently my iTunes thinks i deserve a rather dark life soundtrack. My tastes are pretty well-rounded, but like WhyFi my shuffle button decided to take a very specific turn...

  • This IS fun -- I did it on my blog a week or two ago:

    Opening Credits:
“Reality Used to Be a Friend of Mine” by PM Dawn
Aww, reality! I hadn’t thought about reality for a long time. We used to have some crazy times together, me and reality. I wonder what reality’s up to these days.

    Waking Up:
“Cold Breath ’79” by Gus Gus
You know it’s going to be a really rough day when that’s what you hear first thing in the fucking morning. Jeebus.

    First Day at School:
“Move Somethin’” by LL Cool J
Wow. That is NOTHING like my school. Good thing, I guess; the teen pregnancy rate was already bad enough. With this kind of music bumping in the hallways, it would have been the whole drill team that got knocked up, instead of just a sizable percentage.

    Falling In Love:
“All My Little Words” by Magnetic Fields
Gee, I’m glad it wasn’t one of Merrit’s bitter songs.

    Fight Song:
“Something Must Break” by Joy Division
A really, really emo fight, apparently. After which we'll retreat to our corners and apply more hair gel.

    Breaking Up:
“Gone Gone Gone” by John Ralston
Oh for fuck’s sake. Are you fucking KIDDING me?

    Prom:
“Melt with You” by Modern English
Wait, what year did that come out? That might have actually been played at my prom.

    Life:
    “Asshole” by Rilo Kiley
    Uplifting, no?

    Mental Breakdown:
“I Want You” by Tom Waits
The Elvis Costello song by the same name would have been more appropriate, as this song is actually very sweet.

    Driving:
    “People Watching” by Jeff London
I forgot I even had this. If I’m driving out in Kansas somewhere, where the roads are long and flat and curveless, this is just gonna put me in a trance and cause me to drift off the road and have a big blazing wreck. Thanks, iTunes!

    Flashback:
“Chop Suey, Chow Mein” by Louis Prima and Keely Smith
Because apparently I'm flashing back to a time before I was even born. DUDE. Did I just blow your mind?

    Getting Back Together:
“You Make Loving Fun” by Fleetwood Mac
Well, that's cute in an altogether disgusting kind of way.

    Wedding:
    “Diddle My Skittle” by Peaches
Um. The bride is NOT wearing white, people.

    Birth of Child:
    “Unchained” by Van Halen
Yes, I have Van Halen in my iTunes. Shut up. And apparently I’m giving birth in the back of my friend Melissa’s Camaro circa 1983.

    Final Battle:
“Eyes on My Back” by Joseph Arthur
That doesn’t bode well at all. No wonder it's followed by...

    Death Scene:
“Sister Christian” by Coheed and Cambria
Niiiice! Actually, I'd be fine with this being played at my death scene. Please make note of it just in case you happen to be there, okay?

    Funeral Song
“Pictures of You” by the Cure
That’s right, bitches: You’re ALL gonna cry.

    End Credits:
“Those Were the Days” by Kiki and Herb
That would be a pretty much perfect way to end it, I think.
  • Opening Credits: Gram Parsons, "$1000 Wedding"

First Day at School: Esthero, "Heaven Sent"

Fight Song: Pop Will Eat Itself, "Sherwood" (12 mix)
Breaking Up: DJ Shadow and Dan "The Automator", "Bombay 405 Miles"
Prom: Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers, "The Tag Game"
Life: Belle and Sebastian, "Dog On Wheels"
Mental Breakdown: Nick Drake, "From The Morning "
Driving: Artur Rubinstein, Guarneri Quartet, "Dumka: Andante con moto"
    Flashback: DJ Shadow, "Untitled"
Getting Back Together: Rosemary Clooney, "You Started Something"
Wedding: Beck, "I've Seen The Land Beyond"
Birth of Child: Interpol, "Obstacle 1"
Final Battle: Lee Scratch Perry, "Maxi Merlin"

    End Credits: Manitoba, "Webers"
End Credits: Count Basie, "Smarty (You Know It All)"
End Credits: Sin/Kruder & Dorfmeister, "Where Shall I Turn"

It's funny- I have a lot of very disparate styles in my iTunes library, so I rarely use the shuffle feature except with playlists. I think this demonstrates why...

And what's up with 2 songs by DJ Shadow? I only have 4 albums by the dude (in a music library of well over 20,000 songs /over 100 GB).

Wow, that was fun, but made me a bit nervous by not knowing what was coming up. I'm surprised by how fitting some of the songs were for certain segements. This reminded me of the shuffle segment in The Onion and sometimes some really shitty stuff comes on. I think the funniest song for this, for me, was "Nasty Girl" for the falling in love song. So funny.
