no insurance and poor........ need a dentist — Brooklynian

no insurance and poor........ need a dentist

So.. i graduated college this past June and of course, my insurance ran up. My job that i've had for the past few months is just now going full time...
so basically I have no extra money in my life..

but, i have a temporary filling from a root canal I haven't gotten finished yet, and its quickly deteriorating and I need to get a rebuilding and temporary crown ASAP.

Does anyone know of any low-cost dentists in the area? or is anyone here a dentist? I called the NYU dentist school but they are still in the hundreds of dollars for this type of work.

  • I used this affordable dental plan for several years - it's only $153. per year and covers a lot of dental expenses.

  • Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center on Fulton and Lafayette is a federally-funded clinic that offers dental services. Very affordable prices, as far as dental work goes. Try googling the name for contact info.
  • You can also try the Ryan Centers. There are several in Manhattan.

does this insurance apply if the dentist does not accept insurance?
In other words, since my dentist doesn't accept ANY insurance, could I pay him upfront and have the insurance co. reimburse me?

I am very curious as I do not have any dental insurance either :(
  • Try the NYU Dental School. It is supervised students that work on your teeth. I have a few friends who have had their teeth worked on with great results.
  • Subject: dentist

i recommend dr sassoon on 9th street near 5th avenue

One of my friends went to NYU Dental School several times while he was uninsured -- had a root canal and some fillings replaced, if I remember right, and he was really pleased with the care he got there.

I am having quite a bit of work done at the NYU dental school - root canals and implants. I have had the same student work on me throughout and although it takes a little longer than the conventional dentist office they do good work. If you want I can give you the name and number to the student working on me. I know they are on break now but will be back the first week of January.
  • I have a friend who is a dentist, a graduate of NYU dental school, and teaches classes at NYU on oral surgery. He recommends NOT using the dental school because the quality of the students have gone significantly downhill. He said it used to be one of the best programs in the country, now it's a shadow of what it used to be, mainly due to a lawsuit a few years ago by 4 students who received failing grades, but were still graduated because they argued in court NYU was obligated to graduate them since they were accepted into their program.
  • NYu Dental school its expensive!!!!!And me too looking for a dentist, my tooth filling cemeout i ma walking around with the threat of a root canal and no insurance!!!
  • looking for a place myself.
Does anyone know how much nyu charges for root canals and crowns?
  • listen, i found a place. A-Z Dental on 9th st between 5th and 6th. im getting my root canal and crown totally finished for $750 or something, and its broken down into increments of just over 200 a visit, so its affordable, kind of.

My dentist is Dr. Shekeinmeyster or something, she's really nice and funny.
first timers get a $30 discount
  • that's a pretty good price.
i wonder if that's a sliding scale fee

it shouldn't be such an expense to seek medical assistance
there should be state provided medical/dental care
    --tax pot to fund it...
  • I should just go to Canada and get it done, right?

When I lived in Japan, I had to go to the emergency room because I had a really bad ear infection (really bad, I went deaf in one ear and red liquid was oozing out of it)...
Anyway, I got emergency treatment and 4 prescriptions, and with no insurance it only cost me around $70. If i had insurance, it would have been like $15.

    THATS health care
  • I LOVE my dentist, I think he's fair and cheap...(Although I have never had the kind of work done that you mention). He's in Williamsburg, so I bit of a trek, but you could try him. He's the best dentist I've ever had. Joseph Cimino (718) 387-0085. 375 Graham Ave. L train to Graham Ave Walk a few blocks North on Graham. good luck

yeah, but you had to take out a second mortgage to buy one of those square watermelons, right?

  • I am still looking. what I really need is a good monthly payment plan. I have several teeth that need root canals/crowns, and money is always tight.
I called NYU and they said they do installments, does anyone know more about that, or places are really good with that. I went to one place but they turned me down for the payment plan due to bad credit
  • I have medical insurance- I couldn't imagine not having that- but dental insurance doesn't make sense for me at the moment. So I go to Dr. Sarji at 206 7th Ave at 3rd (2nd Floor). His phone number is 718-788-8009.

A friend recommended him, at he's been good so far.
  • I'd recommend A-Z Dental too. A couple years ago I was having awful pain from a wisdom tooth and went there. They couldn't extract it since it was a difficult case and had to go to an oral surgeon. But they were all really great and very gentle considering I could hardly open my mouth at all.

Also, check craigslist in the general community section. I was looking through there a week or 2 ago and saw this post.
