  • South Slope
    Luigi's Pizza 5th ave. btwn 20th and 21st.
Gio has been pieing since 1973.
  • steve wrote: The newer Brick Ovens like Frannys are interesting too, just not in the same class as the big 3 which combine top quality ingredients, experience, artistry, and perhaps a pinch of magic.
I was surprised to see the latest TONY rank Franny's #10 in the city, ahead of Patsy's, Grimaldi's, and Lombardi's. DiFara was #1.
  • I was surprised too, although I think Franny's is great and Lombardi's can be inconsistent.
  • Lombardis is my all time favorite! (but I have yet to try DiFara)
  • I still think Franny's pizza is over-rated. The starters are amazing, and the toppings on the pizza are amazing, but the crust flavor to me just leaves a lot to be desired. I prefer Amorina in terms of crust quality, though I wish the crust were thinner at Amorina. some of Amorina's combos are also more delicious - like the summer corn, fresh basil and mozzerella pizza. mmm.

I'm not a huge fan of tomato sauces in general, so really great pizza in my opinion doesn't have tomato sauce.

best pizza I've ever had was at a super fancy italian restaurant in madrid maybe 15 years ago: the crust was paper thin under the toppings and crisp. the "sauce" was a garlic and olive oil paste (what I was actually hoping for on the clam pizza I got at franny's , but didn't get), paper thin slices of fresh tomato and mozzarella with dots of tellagio. SO GOOD. if I had the time and the access to a real pizza oven, I'd try to reproduce it.

i've heard a lot about difara's. where is it?
Avenue J off 15th St. Just take the Q to Avenue J and it's about a block away.

    DiFara's!!!

    Midwood?

Tomato sauce is my favorite part ... sometimes I order extra.

    *shudder*

I don't mind if there's a bit, and it tastes good. but one of my regular issues with Two Boots is the excessive sauce. :)
  • I agree with the positive assesments of Franny's. My main complaint there is the price and attitude - but their pies are supremet. I only had one good experience at both Lombardis and Grimaldis. Numerous visits after that were all disappointing. These places are past their prime now and way overrated.

I vote best "gourmet" slice in the Slope Franny's and Anthony's. For "regular" slices - I'm not sure. Smilers is closest to me but I don't particularly like it. Joe's is good I guess - and Pino's isn't bad either.

My favorites in all of Bklyn though are Totonno's in CI and DiFaras. Its hard to compare the two though b/c diFaras is a different style pie.
  • DiFara's

I ve lived in NYC my whole life and tried all of the well known places....nothing comes close to DiFara's....it's something that every pizza lover must experience.
  • Totonno's is my favorite, hands-down--worth the subway trip every time. Someone else mentioned the attitude at Franny's--and that's what keeps me from going back there (though the pizzas are excellent). If you don't come off as a total foodie and/or oenophile, they seem not to be interested....
DiFara's artichoke pizza is tops too.
  • San Remo on Cortelyou Rd-Rugby Rd is pretty good, especially their fresh tomato and mozarella slices!
  • Being Brooklyn Born and Italian, Totonno's hand down, good down to earth service and by far the best Pizza. Franny's is the complete opposite. I had to pay for my grated cheese! not cool.
  • Subject: Slope but will deliver as far as Sou Slope/Greenwood

I like Pino's. Their pizza is not the greatest I've ever had, but it's good, and they call you either buddy or pal every time you order and I like that. "What can I do for you buddy? You got it pal. It'll be about 35 minutes buddy".
  • We want to love Pino's, but too many cold pies or "sliders." :(
  • There's something about Anthony's pizza that just works for me. I recently tried Franny's based on the recommendations here a while back, and it's good too, but I found the place to be pricey overall. I had a yummy appetizer - something like anchovies on toasted bread - and I could have eaten about 10 of those. They only gave us 2 small slices of bread. Agree with others on Two Boots. It's a little different in terms of some subtle spice or another, but good. Try it.
  • I'm surprised there's no mention of Fornino's in Williamsburg, Bedford b/w N6-N7. Basically a lot like Franny's, all pie no slice, but a little more casual and not so "we're headier than thou cuz we make our own organic sausage" Although I did enjoy Franny's, but not quite sure why it gets all the hype.

I also think diFara's is amazing. You gotta watch the pie be made. For a place that sells slices in a very un-interesting restaurant, it's quite a spectactular meal.

Another vote for La Villa too. It's been way too long since i've had their smoked mozz, although in recent years I've found myself ordering the calzones, which I think are only $7 with a topping, and so huge.

Anyone take the Pizza Tour - http://bknypizza.com/ ?
  • Subject: South Park Slope

I love how it took six hours for this thread to veer into "cranky" and "churlish," =D> though true to our collective character, it veered back out again.

In terms of this discussion, to me, "pizza" means a place you go to get a slice, not some place with checkered table cloths where you sit down and everything. ...It's a place without any pretention, that has few places to sit, a lighted menu board and (hopefully) with a beautiful-but-disinterested woman of vaguely Italian descent working the counter, that you presume to be the owner's dutiful daughter, but that you never get to find out, no matter how many slices you order. =P~

...Uh. Despite all that, I have nothing new to add. Lenny's and Joe's are excellent-- such delicious pizza, plus they are open late.

Honorable mention to Prospect Pizza, right outside the steps to the uptown side of the Prospect Avenue Station. Slices are only $1.50. ...And to the place near the downtown steps to the Union Street Station, though I forget its name.

And, thanks to you, I am now hungry for pizza.
  • Subject: Pizza by the Park, Pinos, Roma

For slices that are tasty and not expensive, I like Roma, Pinos and Pizza by the Park. It's best to eat them there, unless you live nearby (in my experience they get a little cold and lose crispness due to the steam in the box). The slice at Pizza by the Park that has fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil, is the best I've had in this area (for a slice place). Makes me drool just thinking about it! Really, you should try it!!

I got a pie there once and it was kinda greasy-soggy bleah. But, that was only once so who knows.

But about the buddy-pal thing, I have to say I'm an absolute sucker for being called Sweetheart or Darlin'. Granted it's more of a diner thing, but I can never have too much of that! :D
  • Nobody Mentione La Bruschetta on 7the 'cross from the hospital
  • s-wat wrote: Nobody Mentione La Bruschetta on 7the 'cross from the hospital
    with good reason.
  • I've a special place in my heart for Pizza Plus, on 7th Ave and 11th St in the South Slope. Far from gourmet, but reliable, fast, varied and the folks running it were always so nice. Plus, they were 2 blocks from home!

Now I live in PH and have yet to find an equivalent. Franny's is fine, but too pricey to do too often. :?
  • check out Korner Pizza, E 4th street and church ave been there for 40 years must be doing something right
  • s-wat wrote: Nobody Mentione La Bruschetta on 7the 'cross from the hospital
oh-my-god. tried it once--the name sounded good, menu looked authentic--it was some of the absolute worst excuse for pizza i've had anywhere. catsup on cardboard.
  • I know this isn't the point of this thread, but I'm still not over the death of Lento's (Ovington and 3rd Ave. in Bay Ridge)... I loved that pizza! So thin... so very very thin and crispy. (I'm making that Homer Simpson noise as I type.)

There was a place on 13th ave and 70th called Cristardi's that had great pizza... I haven't been there in a while but I hope they're still open.

When I was a kid I loved Lenny & John's on Flatbush Ave and a tiny place called Giorgio's in Bergen Beach.

Ok, this is getting maudlin. Del Corso on 3rd Ave in Bay Ridge is actually open and makes a nice pie. And they have Italian Karaoke!!!

    this requires a field trip.
  • Graziella's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is no one mentioning this sweet place???!

I know it's in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill but hell, you guys are talking about taking trains to Midwood! They have the great thin crust, no soupy sauce and excellent toppings of a Grimaldi's plus in the summer they have a roof garden.

I really like the family vibe too. SUnday nights are packed and they have a terrific fennel salad that is practically a meal.

Its on VANDERBILT between Dekalb and Myrtle.

Franny's is way too expensive and Amorina's hasn't hit it either. DiFara's rocks of course but a bike ride down Vandy is often a preferable trip to me....
  • Ooh! I totally forgot SPUMONI GARDENS! On 86th St. past Ave. U.

Great pizza, not to mention a killer Chicken Marsala hero. mmmm...

And of course, spumoni that will make you cry.

I've never been to that place, but I've heard they're the place to go for Sicilian in particular. Are you talking about the Sicilian slice?
