have you seen the potted plant in the Half window? it was a striking plant when Half closed--tall green leaves with a bright yellow trim. now it's withered and on the verge of death.
i stopped by Half one day when the broker was there prepping for a visit by a prospective tenant. i asked to buy the plant for $30 but was told that the property was being sold as is, namely the wine bottles but also the dying plant. how ridiculous! -

The first version was not utterly worthless. It was a nice place that didn't make enough money. -
Subject: Plan for Plan B
As one of the suits mentioned in the posts I am happy to see the interest in the Half space on this forum and will look to it and other community sources as we refine our plans for Plan B (the name second half is very good and we though about diet soda as a name lol)
As a ny investment banker and after having had a great local place on Columbus between 85 and 86th for after work I recently moved to brooklyn as part of a mid life relaxation plan brought on by a need to spend more time at home with my three kids (their mother died in an accident two years ago). The name Plan B is B for brooklyn, bar, burger etc. Also means its a casual place without pretension and is my own personal Plan B
Having found the Half space I now live one block from it and love the neighborhood. I look forward to having a space that will be a benfit to the community it serves.
We have applied for a full liquor license and will be installing a full kitchen, we have a chef I have known for years that in addition to standard fare (burgers, wings, fries) etc will offer healthy choices and rotating specials. We will have a kids menu as well. The license can take several months for approval and we are torn between waiting for the license so we can open fully operational or a soft opening - as of now we are leaning towards waiting.
There will be Wi-fi and two or three tv's for sports events. The volume level will premit conversation and lighting will allow you to see your food
As a wine lover myself we will continue to support a good selection of wines by the glass.
There will be three generations of us in addition to a great manager around to support Plan B. We look forward to your comments

PSS for those who are curious ive tried some of the reds they left behind and they were quite good - we wont be serving any of those bottles -

Honestly I would suggest that you open sooner than later. Can't imagine you'll get the license before the end of the summer. Of course i don't know enough about buisness to know what makes more sense. I just want to see the hood fixed up with no empty store-fronts.

Also, that space has a great little backyard area, and the more places where people can get a bite while sitting outside at this time of year, the better! -

congrats! i'm glad to see something opening in that space.
i hope you will use the backyard -- it's a nice space, and i LOATHE televisions in restaurants/bars, so i personally will be more likely to come if i can be away from them. (watching a game in a dive is one thing; tv on all day for no reason in particular is another.) just my two cents. -
Congrats and welcome to the neighborhood! I have to say, in my opinion, you are filling a much needed void...there have been several times I have said to my wife.."we need a decnet place to have a reasonable dinner where I can keep an eye on a ballgame." I am happy that you are going to have TV's for this purpose, and get the sense that you are not looking to become a sports bar.
An idea regarding a potential soft-opening....why not charge a very modest corkage fee in the beginning? I realize most of the profit is in alcohol sales...that being said, I imagine many in the neighborhood will be excited to have this new option, and as the other posters said, it would be nice to enjoy the garden in the summer season.
Either way....looking forward to the opening of Plan B!!! -

Just as long as it doesn't have more Caribbean food (we have enough already, thankyouvery much), I'm all for it. The one thing I LOVED about half was that back room with moderate lighting and books. I know I wasn't the only teacher in there grading papers and getting my drink on. The bathrooms were also quite nice.

I've heard that applications for liquor licenses are running about 6-7 months these days so I'm going to guess that this is the main delay.
While I have no knowledge of this specifically I'm also going to guess that this is the delay in opening up the space that was formerly PK's/Utopia on Washington. There was a post about the revived Washington Ave merchant's association that mentioned a sports bar coming on Washington and the For Rent sign on PK's has been gone for a while so I'm guessing that's what's happening there. -
hi all, i was sitting next to the owner, Greg, the other day at beast, he was talking about the wait for the liquor license. with community board 8 not even meeting again until mid-september, we are going to have to wait...at least that long, if not longer (previous post).
Plan B sounds great and Greg seems like a really nice guy, will be a welcome addition to Vanderbilt. -
They really make it hard to open a place, eh? No wonder the restaurant biz is so difficult...its almost impossible to even get off the ground.

hmmmm. i got the scoop on this place from a friend of mine who knows the owner and his girlfriend whos gift it is (the bar apparently is a gift to his much younger girlfriend to play around with--cute). looking forward to a new bar, but not looking forward to the type of bar with manhattan-like prices, and neon signage (i hope that my saying this just jinxed the neon signage)... also, as a lady, am i a the only one seriously turned off by the name Plan B????????????? The name alone makes me want to stay far away from the place.

Huh. "Plan B" conjures up a couple things in my head, but nothing too terribly awful. The worst is that it's just self-denigrating (I know that's not how it's intended)... like, "Well, I wanted to open a really great restaurant. This was, 'Plan B.'"

No, I don't. There's lots of Plan B's in the world. Even down to the White House's non-Plan B in Iraq... Condi saying something along the lines of, "Our Plan B is to make Plan A work." I guess if you opened a diner or an oxygen bar called, "The Morning After" I would see it your way. But, "Plan B" is just very broad.

totally agree. of course, I guess in my case it's the whole having had to ask for it once thing ... (yeah yeah, tmi, but frankly, shit happens, folks, and memory not so great with erasure of bad experiences)

I'm not surprised that a guy wouldn't think of the oral contraceptive first. After all, it's women who take it, not men. I imagine it was a dude who thought up the name for Plan B, heh heh.
