Half...hmmm

I just walked by and it looked like Plan B might be open. Did anyone else see?
-
I am starting to feel for this place...I mean, could liquor license issues—if that is indeed the case—really take this long to resolve? The place looked ready to go at least 6-7 weeks ago...
-
Plan B is really hurting themselves at this point. If a liquor license is the issue, it's understandable they can't open but the longer you wait for a business to open the more likely it is that it'll be disappointing. At this point, there's been too much waiting. And Half suffered from many things: lack of focus, bad service, etc. Why should I expect anything more from Plan B if they're unable to get it together and get open?
I've gone from looking forward to expecting disappointment with this business. -

Way to support the neighborhood. Instead of making judgments based on an assumption—liquor license issues—let's give the bloke who's trying to open the joint the benefit of the doubt. There's a myriad of reasons that could be the cause of the delayed opening. Let us imagine that the windows were covered in paper—would we be asking these questions? Probably not. -
I'm just stating something that I'm feeling about it and heard from other people. A man only has so much anticipation in him. Then you get sick of waiting. This doesn't mean I won't try Plan B when it opens or support it regularly if it's a good business. What's not good business is what they're doing though in my opinion.
And why would I give him the benefit of the doubt? That's not how it works. All that's been proven so far is that he can't get the place open.
And as far as I can see, he hasn't communicated the problem to the neighborhood which he could easily do here in this space. He's allowing this negativity to creep in. -
I actually kinda agree with OTB on this one. Weather Up and Barrette went from being rumors to realities in just a few months with very little drama in between.
the Plan B folks have been hanging out in the nabe for months now bragging about their awesome new bar ... while bellying up at another nabe bar. neighborly behavior ... okay. but not really speaking to me about the professionalism of the bar owners. I mean, really? -
alright alafairnadia & OTB....y'all have some salient points. there's a fine line to hanging a shingle in a nabe and promoting a new biz that "will be open soon" to actually following through.
-
I agree with Old Time Brooklyn. I just checked the older posts of this thread and saw that the owner of Plan B first posted about opening the bar back in June, 2007, nearly a year ago. I would love to have another place to eat and drink on Vanderbilt Avenue, but it doesn't seem to be happening with this place. I always try to support new local businesses, especially bars and restaurants and really want this place to open.
How about an update, Mr. Owner? -

especially given the business efficacy of the former owners of that space. they were the worst bar owners ever - they took what is generally a cash-crop business (liquor) and failed ... in a hyper-gentrifying neighborhood at the height of the real estate boom in the area. WTF? so seeing someone else take over and just kinda fail is not pretty. and their shit isn't even open for biz yet. they're bleeding cash right now ... -
They probably got some amount of months free in their lease to set up the business --- standard practice --- but I doubt this many. So yeah, they're probably losing a lot of dough right now.
-
i talked to the dude that owns the place...he is awaiting a liquor license...he knows he's losing business but cant open w/o booze. he said they plan to have cheese-stuffed burgers...now that seems worth waiting for!
-
This was open yesterday. Limited menu. Not sure on booze.
-
Walked past again...taps are intact. Guess they're good to go. Anyone check it out yet?
I did think I saw a Bud Light tap. I hope that's not true. -
Cheese stuffed burgers? Man, this country cracks me up.
-
a friend of mine distributes beer to bars all around the city, and he went into to talk to these guys months ago when it looked like they were near opening - they wouldn't even consider sierra nevada. look out for bud, bud light, and heineken.
-
i won't have to look out, since i won't be there. televisions and bud light and $5 french fries...doesn't really seem like my kind of joint. thanks for the heads up.
RIP Half -
Yeah, what a disappointment. Gotta have good taps. Durr.
-
One of you should actually go there and get real confirmation as to what they serve and what the place is like before bad mouthing a new establishment on this forum.
If they have big flat screens that means they are appealing to sports fans, and you kind of have to have bud/bud light on tap for that crowd, that doesn't mean that they don't have some good beers too.
RIP Half?? Half was terrible bar....didn't matter that they didn't serve Bud. -
i haven't eaten there, but i did look at their posted menu. i doesn't appeal to me. it might well appeal to others.
i liked having a glass of wine in the backyard at half. i don't know whether that made it a good bar; it just made it a place i liked to go.
perhaps this new place will do very well. i just don't feel like going there, that's all.
anyway, with franklin park open, i no longer need to go all the way to vandy for good beer. -
I know what they have. Saw the menu, saw the taps. Stella, Blue Moon, Cider, Bud, snooooooze.
-
I think the general attitude of the last posts are snobby and harsh, esp. if you've never been to a place, but to each there own. Seems like they are trying to fit a niche that doesn't exist in the neighborhood. Personally I like all kinds of beers and won't rule out a place because they serve Stella and Blue Moon, they are good beers IMO. They don't seem to be selling themselves as a micro brew place or anything, the selection seems comparable to Tavern on Dean beer selection wise (better TV's though.)
I wanted to like Half, but there service was absolutely the worst and the environment was bad, even the back yard. I felt like it should be nice, but wasn't.
There's always a lot if talk on here about supporting local businesses and to read not so nice critiques about a new place from people who have looked in the window at best seems unneighborly. -
i think it's perfectly reasonable to decide without spending money that i don't need to spend money on beers i know i don't like (well, except blue moon). it would be one thing to judge the food in advance, but bud is bud is bud, no matter who's selling it.
stella always makes me think of my dad's friend from belgium, who taught us out in the provinces, well before microbrews of any kind were available where we lived, that, "there are 400 beers made in belgium, and 399 of them are better than stella artois." it's just bud you have to pay more for, imo.
as for televisions: i know lots of people like them. i don't. i don't watch at home, either.
but all of that's okay: not every bar has to be my kind of place. as far as i know, all the bars near me are more or less local businesses -- i'm not headed to bennigans. so never fear, my drinkin' dollar will still be local. -
I'm still going to go there and check it out. I'm just disappointed in the taps.
Throw a Six Point or something in that mix, it's not hard. -
I'm more interested in the food than the beer. There's an ever-expanding list of places to get a quality drink in the neighborhood--good buffalo wings, on the other hand, are in much shorter supply.

Subject: plan b
I was there this week -- nice people.
Friend "lost" her wallet there, though -- anyone find it? -
people, dont be afraid to have an opinion.
this place looks totally lame. belongs in hoboken. yes i am a snob, a hater, but i dont need bud-drinking frat boys in my neighborhood. brooklyn is dead. -
felt like i needed to say something since I went there last week. There aren't many places near by to get a burger. The burger was pretty good and the garlic/parmesan fries were really good. Can't wait to see the full menu.

Except for Tavern on Dean, Beast and Soda. -
^and homage and flatbush farm.

My wife and I went here earlier in the week (Tuesday, I think) and enjoyed ourselves. As another poster noted, this place is aimed at sports fans - there are three TV screens showing basketball, baseball, boxing, etc. The staff was friendly and attentive and the crowd seemed to be having fun. The menu is basic bar food, though an "expanded" menu is due over the next week or so. I believe that the bar will do well, given the popular formula of food, beer, and sports.
Gypsy, your comments are right on the money and it will probably be to your advantage. I, for one, am glad to have a neighborhood bar where I can enjoy a beer, watch a baseball or football game, and avoid the high-school-style cliquish mentality that permeates this board (c'mon, anyone who accumulates 5000+ posts on an internet message board can't have much of a life!).
