  • Well as most of you know, I am a friend of the owner, but I hadn;t been to the bar until Saturday night and it was fun! The crowd was very chill, the backyard was nice and I had the garlic fries which were to die for!! I really dug the place!
I didnt mention to the owner about the alcohol choices some of you complained about, but I figured I would save the criticism for another day.

All in all, a very nice place and bound to get even better once it is more established. Hope y'all come by!!

anywhere online to view the menu? I'd like to go and bring some friends, but they'll want to knwo what they're in for in terms of selection and prices.
  • Well that's certainly not the worst tap selection I've ever seen. Not as bad as some were makin' it out to be. I sure do like me a BK Lager.
  • yeah, the taps seem fine to me.

i think one stumbling block is that any place as generic as this -- i don't mean that as an insult, just an observation of what seems to be its intent -- seems a bit ersatz when new. a bar of this sort, like a diner, seems like something that should be old and familiar. perhaps this place will one day have that patina.

sorry if that doesn't make sense; i'm tired but trying to figure out why this place seems slightly wrong right now, though nothing about it is particularly objectionable.
  • The verdict is in: this place ain't good. The owner seems like a nice guy and the TVs are nice but the overwhelming feeling you get from eating/drinking there is Eh.
  • It's great if you want to watch a game. Nice big TVs.. Beer... mmmmmm.

They need to improve the music though.
  • The food sucks though.

i dont like the place (see earlier snobby comments about it belonging in hoboken), but being a burger afficionado, i had to investigate the plan b burger. i have to say, it wasnt bad, and the crispy slim fries were top notch. still, hoping the place dies, but seems unlikely...
  • Verdict? You are just giving your opinion just like others here who think the place is decent.

I think that the place is kinda plain, but the beer and food were good and as expressed earlier the TV's are great for watching sports...no other place like that in the neighborhood.
  • I've found that the food depends on what you order. I agree that the fries are decent, as is the caesar salad. Steer clear of the clam chowder, though, which tastes like Campbell's. Overall, it's your average sports bar and a good place for watching the game and relaxing with a beer. Nice staff, too.

Really? I'm just giving my opinion? Thanks for clearing that up.
  • Here's my thoughts on the place:

Kudos to the owner(s) for recognizing an unserved niche, creating a product to serve that niche and giving folks in the neighborhood (which, mind you, consists of at LEAST 1-2 people that don't read these boards) an option for food/drink (regardless of one's opinion of the offerings - an option is an option).

And, you know what? Every time I walk by when there is a game on, the place is busy.

So, good for them, good for us, and good for the neighborhood.

Support local business. That doesn't mean you have to spend your own hard earned money there, but don't blast the place because it's not your style.
  • I've given the place a couple chances. The food is just so pedestrian. Wings are boring. Burger is boring. Fries ain't bad. Beers are okay I suppose. There's just nothing to draw you in.

The blasting of the music at 6pm and the lack of any landscaping or decent tables on the back deck is also a problem.

I wish them luck but I won't be back for anything more than a beer.

    The staff is nice though.
  • i hear they are causing a worse noise problem on vandy than soda ever did. kinda impressive. in a bad way.
  • Those are valid complaints, agreed. I just don't get the people that complain about the place because it isn't exactly what they wanted.

Not giving a business your money is a good enough way to show you don't support them...blasting them anonymously on a message board is weak.

I know I'm guilty of it, too.

Anyway, I didn't really enjoy my food here, but it wasn't horrible. I also don't live near it, so the noise doesn't bother me (but, I do find it troublesome that neighbors are having issues with it). However, I also find it to be a pretty good option should I want to watch a baseball game, or something of the like.
  • I agree that it totally fulfills many lacks the nabe didn't have filled. however. the noise issue is a big one. with the # of bars opening/open on vandy it's nuts that this one place is causing such an issue.

personally, I'll probably never go there just because I don't care - I'd rather have a glass of pink cava at beast or listen to a dissertation regarding absinthe at barrette than hang out in a sports bar. but I do know such places need to exist and have patronage - that's not my issue. I just wish they'd tell their customers to STFU when they walk out the front door. my pals who live on vandy could live without the noise.
  • ^
Noise is a huge issue, and it's sucky for the neighbors. Hopefully, Plan B can address that.

actually, I daresay that Ocean 8 on Flatbush is a lot like that. but with a little more to do if you happen to get bored.

    Then what are you saying?

You'd need to shut down this board b/c that's about 75% of what the posts are about.

I'm saying that I'm equal parts confused and scared, with a touch of whimsical.

  • Friday night I took some friends to Soda for fries and lamburgers, it was about 11, not many food options after 11 on Vandy, Barrette was packed and Beast is great, but expensive. I've been to Soda a million times and I like it there. I've never had a problem there. I've worked in the food industry for years, I know I'm a good tipper and I'm pretty sure I'm a good customer, but for some reason, our waitress literally groaned when we sat down. My group was comprised of two very dorky, friendly girls and one very geeky, friendly IT guy. The waitress took our drink orders and left the menu's for us to decide.

ONE HOUR LATER she had NOT yet returned for or with our order, she walked by us at least 4 times. We tried to grab her attention with excuse mes, she ignored us. She made it to the table next to us, where two very pretty, trendy girls sat. It seemed obvious then, we just weren't cool enough. We got up and left - it was now midnight. I will give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe three dorks just ripped her off before us, but I doubt it.

We went to Plan B and asked if they still had food, they apologized and said "no". On our way out, a guy stopped us, "HEY, we'll open the kitchen for you." AWESOME. Everyone, even the waitress who was about to end her shift before we walked in, smiled and welcomed us.
We are NOT sports fans nor do we look like sports fans, yet, we were welcomed. The food was awesome: curly fries and chicken strips, yep, fried crap that leaves your body screaming, perfectly paired with budweiser (and disco music in that background. ?) If they hadn't have done that for us, we would have been left to the Bodega on Underhill, twinky's and cheesy poofs. We tried to give the waitress a big tip before she left, she wouldn't take it - she told us to give it to the bar.

Verdict: The food was good, the place was fun, and there were no waitresses who thought they were way too cool for their job. I'm surprised that she gets away with that nonsense in PH. The PH I know and heart despises "entitlement"...

and noise level? no way is Plan B louder than Barrette, Friday night we went to Barrette before we went to Soda, it was so packed there was no place to sit. Barrette is LOUD. I live down the street from Barrette and I've been woken up NUMEROUS times to the sound of barfing and drunken disorderly's, WITH my windows CLOSED. I'd take a bunch of macho dudes talking about the Yanks and playing disco music over barfing disorderly's any day.
  • Good story. I definitely get the impression that the Plan B owner will go the extra mile to make his joint a hit. So....maybe I'll give them some more chances.
  • Plan B was packed today during the Spain/Germany game...I walked by, and it was 2-3 deep standing room behind the bar seats.

Even though it's not my favorite, I'm happy for the owner/staff, and I'm glad it's there for when I want to watch games and have some beverages.

dont believe this story for a second. who waits an hour to be served? first time post = sketchy.
  • Being a person who ceased patronizing Soda several years ago due to this very sort of treatment, I believe this poster's story. Soda sucks!
  • We waited an hour, we were outside in the back, smoking and catching up, we were obviously in no rush, we like Soda. I'm not sketchy - I have seen businesses attempt to post stuff incognito around here *ahem, Iheartbarrettes* but I assure you, I'm no part of Plan B, I may have mentioned very loudly that I was going to "write something on that website" when I was there, but that's it.

I'd been weary of Plan B because of this blog, I had "notions" that were not accurate. The people there are really nice, much like the owner of Redlipstick, who is very kind and never makes me feel not cool enough, and the Cuban restaurant next door to Barrette has the best coffee I've ever had in my life AND they're very sweet, and the guys at La Reyna on Vandy call everyone that walks in "Baby", awkward at first - but I've grown to love it, and the owners of the laundromat between the bike shop and Redlipstick are two of the nicest people around and know everyone by name, and India Place- the owners there are very kind. Those places make me feel part of a community, that should be reciprocated to the new neighbors... sketchy. sheesh.
  • gotta say, i can totally see waiting an hour at soda. you think things will pick up any second...and then they don't.

thanks for posting a nice story about plan b.

there are no cuban restaurants on vanderbilt. none. los viejos amigos are either PR or DR. which is fine. but don't confuse the food.
