I finally had dinner at Chavella's last night and the food was wonderful. The owner was very nice. A very positive experience.

Yes, very good food. And I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but the prices are great! Tacos are $2.50, so we had a dinner of 3 each. That with the soup makes the dinner around $11 - very affordable, compared to other options around here.

Interestingly, menupages doesn't have a listing for this place, and menutopia has two listings, one of which says that the place is closed. Please tell me this didn't close already! Does anyone know if it's still a going concern? If so, they should post something on menutopia to let people know.

I have a friend who's friends with the owners. I'll get in touch with him.
-
i just called, they are open and i'm getting something to eat,
-
i let them know about menutopia & suggested menupages
and it was delicious!!! -
Yes, they are still open. Gave them a second try and everyhing was great. Good fresh food, that's cheap. What more can you ask for?

A liquor licence, so all their happy patrons can chat over a Negra Modelo! Any idea when this might happen? -
When I spoke with her last week she was preparing to go before Community Board 8 and seemed unsure about what to expect. If anyone has any pointers on the Licensing process she could probably use them-- I'd like a Dos Equis with my torta please.

The CB 8 people are pretty cool. Just be sure to bring six (6) letters from folks in the n'hood supporting your application when you come to the Economic Development Committee. They meet the second Tuesday of each month at the Center for Nursing and Rehab, on Classon bet. Prospect and Park. It's an open meeting, in case any of you folks are curious what goes on there.
All this is explained in the letter that the CB 8 manager sends out to applicants. They probably ask you questions like "what hours are you open" "how many people can fit you in your place" "how big is your staff", "do you plan to have live entertainment".
Plus they'll have to come to the full Board meeting the Thursday following. -
I'm addicted to their Tortilla Soup and the corn on the cob appetizer, the name of which escapes me, but is covered in this yummy cheesy sauce and so delicious.
And the owner is super nice. -
I think Chavella's (BTW, I edited the thread title to include the name of the place to make it easier for anyone looking for info) is a *great* addition to the neighborhood. Now that it's been there a few weeks I've ordered delivery from there several times, and everything I've had has been *really* good. The corn on the cob appetizer is the best. YUM. Haven't dined in yet, but I did stop by to pick up carryout at one point this weekend and it's a cute space and the waitress was super-nice. If they get a liquor license that would be awesome -- would love to go in and have margaritas or sangria.

I love this place too. Got takeout a few times, and it was very tasty. I also went there with a friend once. We enjoyed it very much. Good food, affordable, and they made a nice effort with the interior. It felt cozy and pleasant to be there.

The dining room of this new Mexican restaurant was all but empty on a recent Wednesday night; not a promising sign. Over the course of dinner, however, it became clear that the place has a significant neighborhood following: We observed patron after patron walking in to pick up orders to go. Chavella’s doesn’t offer much by way of decor—the kitchen is hidden behind green blinds, the floor tiles are a basic tan, and patrons sit at simple wooden tables. But this reasonably priced spot shouldn’t be overlooked as a place to eat out. Service was attentive and friendly, with frequent check-ins and water refills. The trio of salsas (spicy salsa verde, smoky chipotle and chunky pico de gallo; pictured) was served with freshly fried, multicolored chips, which were replenished free of charge. Order the bistec taco and you’ll receive two soft corn tortillas cradling tender marinated flank steak, fresh cilantro and pico de gallo for just $2.50. Addictive grilled ears of corn were buttered, then topped with dollops of creamy chipotle mayo and a sprinkling of cotija cheese. The chorizo con papas torta (black beans, chorizo and potato on a toasted baguette) could have used some heat or acidity to pep up the slightly bland ingredients, but was satisfying and large enough to feed two people. A tip: Make a pit stop at the deli on the corner, since the place is cash only and BYOB.—TONY

Chavellas is my favorite restaurant right now, it's that good. I have to control myself and not get the enchiladas with mole' sauce every night! mmmmmm
-
i tried to go there last night, and the place was packed! there were even people waiting outside...gee, things have changed since i went there a couple of weeks ago!! I am really happy for them, but i am affraid that they might have to find a bigger location soon!!
pos' orale 'mano! -
I just ordered from Chavella's for the first time and thought it was very good. I even scored the last corn on the cob - woohoo!
So in case anyone else needs to know, they deliver out to St.Johns and Nostrand. -
I just had the Plato Don - pretty good, and I'd say a great value. 12 bucks for chicken, steak, rice, beans and all the fixin's - lettuce, cheese, pico, guac, tortillas. Enough food for a big appetite or two smaller ones.

i went on friday night with some friends and we had our pick of tables...maybe people hadn't read the article yet? (thank goodness for my stomach. i was hungry.)
soooooooooo goooood...appetizer and entree for $5 total.
then we went to saje and there was only one other group there (besides the band) as well...and a gooooood brownie! -
I went there the night of First Saturday and it was pretty much us and another table. The enchiladas looked good and I was liking the 1/2 chicken minus the rice+beans to chicken ratio.

Subject: Chavella's Review
The Chavella's report:
So we went there this Saturday in the early afternoon. There was another couple eating at the outside tables. It was sooo nice outside, warm and sunny! We settled down by the window and I immediately noticed this little purple ceramic pot on the table. It was cute and filled to the top with Canel's, "Goma De Mascar."
Such a nice touch! I commented to the waitress that when I was a little kid my grandma would bring me a big bag of these gums when she'd visit from Mexico. She mentioned it to the owner and he said his grandma would also bring him big bags of these gums when she visited him! I found out that he goes searching throughout Sunset Park to find these. Anyways, back to the food!
As a starter we got the chicken tamale ($2.50 each). It was the best tamale I've had in NY, period. The maza was moist and crumbly. The chicken inside tender, shredded and mixed with salsa verde. Could have had a little more filling or maybe a thicker sauce inside, but otherwise damn good.. I'll try the cheese and poblano one next time!
We ordered some bistec, chorizo and potato, and pork with pineapple tacos ($2.50 each). All were great! The steak had caramelized onions, chipotle, and cilantro, with thinly saved jalapeno and a small dash of sour cream. The jalapenos could have been more prominent for both the bistec and the chorizo tacos. They had no spice and were very thin. The steak was tender and very flavorful. The chorizo tacos were also a winner. The pork was one of my favorites. It came out tender in the middle and crispy at the edges, like carnitas should be. It claimed to have habanero salsa, but it wasn't spicy at all. They all came with some chipotle and salsa verde on the side.
We also got a side of rice and beans ($3.00). I was surprised that what came out was mexican rice and black beans, not pintos. However, they were very tasty and the mex rice was very authentic. The rice was fluffy and mixed with bits of corn, carrot and peas.
The waitress was friendly and attentive. The decor was simple and inviting and I really liked the crosses and sconces on the walls. The music was really good too. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Mana, and some more traditional rancheras. Finally, damn, it is soo cheap too! I'll be back often. I'm so sad that this place isn't closer to me! Absolutely delish! -
ok, as a vegetarian, can I eat there?
-
doublediamond, I'm a vegetarian too and I ordered from there a few weeks ago. I think I got the Flautas and Taquitos, they were really yummy. Their menu has stars next to the vegetarian dishes, there are about 17 on their menu. The guy who took my order was an absolute sweetheart and so was the delivery guy. I will definitely order from them again.

So Chavella's is listed on Menutopia now but still not on MenuPages. And they don't actually have the menu on Menutopia. But we can request that they add it.

doublediamond,
They do have veggie options and the cheese and poblano tamale looked really good. The waitress was having one and I was totally staring! =P~ -
Went for Sunday brunch, and found it overpriced and average. Nice place, but small and the seats are too close together, especially if there's a noisy group at the next table. The waitress was nice and seemed to be working hard, but when we got there the place wasn't full, so I was surprised we had to wait ten minutes for any attention. Brunch menu $11.95 for juice (or coffee or tea), mostly eggs on the menu, and Mexican sweet bread. Salad on top of my eggs was fine, not special, with avocado that was perfectly ripe. Caramelized onions were good, but I wasn’t sure if they were part of the salad dressing or what. Omelet (sorry, that was not a frittata) had lots of nice vegetables, but could have used some spice (I wanted to ask for salt, but the place had filled up and the waitress was busy). Boyfriend's eggs (scrambled with vegetables) on tortillas were okay (like mine, pretty bland), his salsa was very nice, good heat, flavorful. I asked for potato hash that was supposed to go with my dish, the waitress said it didn’t, looked at the menu, and said, oh it does. (She was nice about everything, just a little frazzled.) Potato hash was really tasty. I left no longer hungry (portions were fine), but not really satisfied. Maybe I should have gone when it wasn’t the brunch menu. I’m disappointed. After reading all the comments here, I really wanted to like it. --E.

Are you sure you went to the same place? I was there Saturday and it was the regular menu and practically empty. It was around 1pm probably?? Can't remember.
I didn't even see eggs on the menu at all. I took one home so I'll have to double check when I get off work. How odd. The meal I had was very good, lacked some spice, but good for NY mexican. Tacos at 2.50, though not a steal, is still pretty good.
Howdy, Stranger!
