Chavella's - the mexican place on classon

Yeah. There were little jugs of Canel's gum, red walls, punched tin lamps, chilled water in corked bottle, seats about 20 (a really tight squeeze). There was only the brunch menu (with bread and drink). Maybe they only do brunch (and do only brunch) on Sunday (I think brunch was until 4 p.m.). --E.

Wow, I guess so. Maybe they're trying out the brunch on Sundays to see if it flys. Personally, I freakin hate the brunch obsession around here. I'd be OK with it if they also offered a regular menu, however limited, on the side. But I hate paying more than $10 bucks for scrambled eggs. It's also anoying to see BBQ joints and Italian places do brunch. Why would I want to eat eggs at place that's known for it's ribs and brisket? Like the new panini place on 5th, they serve egg panini's and pizza with eggs on top?!? None of their sandwiches are offered!
Some exceptions of course. My fave brunch place is an Italian resturant, but they have unlimited mimosas, so I forgive them.

I had lunch their earlier. Two bistec tacos, a cheese tamale and a side of guacamole. Nice seasonings on all. The owner also promised lengua in the future.

Review of Chavella's in this week's Brooklyn Paper: http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/30/19/30_19chavellas.html
The whole enchilada
By Tina Barry
for The Brooklyn Paper
Cinco de Mayo may have passed, but you can still get into the spirit with a meal at Chavella’s in Prospect Heights.
Arturo Leonar and his fiancee Desiree Detoy opened the restaurant three months ago as a place for Leonar to showcase his culinary talent. Previously, he cooked for 15 years at Calle Ocho in Manhattan under Alex Garcia, who helped popularize Nuevo Latino cooking.
Unlike that hybrid, Leonar’s cuisine is “truly authentic,†he said. “We offer a taste of all the regions of Mexico.â€
One can spot the three-month old Chavella’s by the diminutive eatery’s bright green and yellow tiled facade. Inside the 20-seat dining room, with brick and deep red walls, patrons can sit around the simple wooden tables and enjoy “chile rellenos†made with mild, roasted poblano peppers that are filled with creamy queso fresco cheese and served with a light tomato sauce, beans and rice. The hefty green enchiladas come with chicken or cheese and are topped with either mole (a spicy Mexican sauce that sometimes includes chocolate) or green sauce. There are just two house made desserts: flan and rice pudding, creamy and sweet. Until their wine and beer license is granted, it’s BYOB.
Chavella’s (732 Classon Ave., between Park and Prospect places in Prospect Heights) accepts cash only. Entrees: $7–$12. The restaurant offers lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Subway: C to Franklin Avenue; 2 and 3 to Eastern Parkway/Brooklyn Museum. For information, call (718) 622-3100. -
Uh, that's not a review...that's a commercial.
But still, good for them- they deserve it. -
I love chavella's- I always get takeout or take a friend when we want something in the neighborhood. The owners and waitstaff are always friendly.

Sorry, you're right, I guess it doesn't qualify as a review, more of a write up. Not sure if these things are paid advertisements or not but like you said, good for them regardless.
But still, good for them- they deserve it. -
Subject: Chavella's is good.
Tried Chavella's for the first time last night. Really enjoyed it. Posted my review on Yelp. -
Went for supper yesterday and had the Chavella's salad (lettuce, tomato, grilled chicken and tiny flakes of tortilla with crumbled cheese). It was excellent. The chicken was hot off the grill while the salad was nicely chilled. It had this tangy vinagrette (with lime?) that was great. I was expecting a small salad so ordered a couple of tacos, but the salad was entree sized and really filled me up. I love this place!
-
love it there, too. had lunch on saturday with Emily and dennisobell - super delish. I had the tortilla soup and the chicken quesadilla - hearty & filling for $7! yum!
-
The tortilla soup is my favorite thing there.
-
They have a delicious vegetable torta = a big fat sandwich of salad, avocado and beans. Weirdly delicious...

Was thinking of going to eat at Chevalla's with a friend tonight. I don't mind a "spartan" decor, but is this more of a take out place? Do you think we'll be the only ones in there at 8pm on a Friday night???
-
It is spartan, but definitely not takeout. The place is designed for table service. Never been on a Friday, but I went on a Saturday evening about 5pm and there were four tables occupied besides mine. I'd say odds are there will be at least 1-2 tables occupied.
-
That sounds great. I just didn't know if it was like one of those Chinese take-out places that has 1 or 2 tables which people only sit at if they're waiting for their food.
Thanks! -
went tonight and they had a special -- roast pork chops with corn salsa and chipotle mashed potatoes for $10.50. it was so amazing! the pork was super tender and delicious and juicy. they said they may consider adding it to the menu.
YUM. -
Oh man, I had that same pork chop special a couple of nights before you did. It was fantastic! I shared it with a friend and we also shared the mushroom quesadilla - also fantastic.
-
I ate at Chavella's for the first time yesterday. I didn't even know that the place existed! I love that they deliver all over the neighborhood!
-
Are they still BYOB? Heart something about them getting a liquor liscence.
-
they now serve beer and wine. not sure if you can also bring your own wine for a fee or anything.

Subject: Gallery next to Calvella's?
Hey what's the name of the Gallery next to Calvellas?.
Contact info?
Whats going on there?
Any word?
Calvalle's is great food. Who cares if someone had a bad day, bad look...
The food is to die for! -
It is now possible to peek inside the new Chavella's space. I didn't have my phone with me to snap a pic, but there's a long bar (Mexican tile covering the front of it) with room for 8 stools or so, and more than twice the seating space of the current place.
-
I passed by yesterday and snapped a picture of their very cool looking interior!
Can't wait till they open!
-
New Chavella's sign is up over the doorway. Are we getting close to an opening?
-
I'm perplexed -- the new Chavella's on Franklin is actually Chavela's (with one L).
-
Hmmmm. Perhaps if they open their next one on Bedford, it will have no "l"s at all. Chaveas
Perhaps if they open one on Washington, it will be spelled with three "l"s

New place looks great. lots of attention to details. The huge kitchen is going to make the menu expand for sure. Iron work on the doors and windows should be an example to everybody else..people like open windows when the weather is good.
-
Yes, it does look wonderful. We're very pleased to have such an establishment on our block.
Now if someone would please do something with the southwest corner...
Howdy, Stranger!
