Best Coffee in Prospect Heights?

Heights Coffee sucks ass. Prospect Perk's staff is nice, but the coffee is kind of weak. Joyce has the best coffee in PH proper. Gorilla, just across Flatbush into PS is maybe a little better. Gamin also has great coffee.

Thanks Carnivore. I've had Gorilla many times and I'm not that much of a fan. I'd like to try Gamin though. -

You should. The food is good there too. -

I thought Joyce's coffee was Gorilla? Maybe the difference is how they brew it. -

Yes on both counts. -

I'm not too big of a Gorilla fan, either, but joyce's coffee tastes better to me for some reason. -

Doesn't matter what YOU think, Heights Coffee has the best coffee and the best coffee house in this neighborhood. -

Actually, it does matter what I think.
Heights Coffee's coffee tastes like dishwater, their staff is rude and obnoxious, and they play horrible music in a faux-Starbucks setting.
HEIGHTS COFFEE IS TEH SUXXOR!!!1!!!1 -

You are welcome to. But that place isn't getting another dime of my money. -

It doesn't seem that you have, so no loss there. The great people of Prospect Heights whom I have met at Heights Coffee have no problem spending their money thier and we will continue to do so -

I did initially, and gave them numerous chances to win me over, but they consistently managed to turn me against them. Believe me, I spend a lot on coffee!
They also didn't exactly win any friends by masquerading as customers and promoting themselves on this site either. Incidentally smackdown, I just noticed that almost half of the posts you've made on this site are either pimping Heights Coffee or criticizing other coffee spots in the nabe. You sure you don't have any conflict of interest you'd like to let us know about? -

How about your promotion of joyce. Any conflict there? -
smackdown wrote: How about your promotion of joyce. Any conflict there?
Nope. The regulars here know I'm not in the coffee business- just a heavy consumer. And I've got plenty of posts on this site about lots of other things. It's just that there's been a pattern of over-the-top raves about Heights Coffee by people who rarely or never seem to post about anything else. Without any prior relationship to establish credibility here as an actual neighborhood resident, it's only natural that such posts arouse suspicion. -
I like La Gamin and The Usual. Two end of the spec. Muddy Waters sucks.

You kind of rubbed me the wrong way when you make blanket statements that clearly intend to denigrate local businesses that are serving this great community with quality products and great services.
I am not sure you're not a passive investor, or perhaps you're getting free coffee -

If they had quality products or great services, then I'd have nothing against them.smackdown wrote: I am not sure you're not a passive investor, or perhaps you're getting free coffee
I've already told you I'm not. And there are many people on the site here who've met me in real life and know I'm telling the truth. Whereas you've evaded the question about conflict of interest. -

It is unfortunate that the lady at Muddy Waters has such bad personality. I would support her business if she would just change with the time. -
I like Prospect Perk. Good food, good coffee and friendly service at a decent price.
I have had Gorilla at Joyce's and it was way too strong for my taste.
Also I have not enjoyed the breakfast pastries at joyce's they were sort of blah. -
I am addicted to strong Gorilla coffee, but I have to admit that I walk over to their shop to get it.

This has been a recurrent theme at Muddy Waters, with many complaints. Oddly enough, she has never been anything but friendly to me. I just wish the coffee was better there. -
Tess wrote: I like Prospect Perk. Good food, good coffee and friendly service at a decent price.
Joyce's coffee is way stronger than the coffee at Prospect Perk. It makes sense that if you don't like your coffee that strong, you'd like PP better. I totally agree about the service there. Everyone is super nice.

The pastries at Joyce are hit and miss (although uniformly better than the outsourced ones at Heights Coffee). The scones are reliably delicious. -

You owe the decent people on this board and the people at Heights Coffee an apology for making such irresponsible, off-the-cuff statements about their business which you know nothing about -

That's hilarious. I think the people on this board know that I offer an unbiased opinion, and that I have given both positive and negative reviews of lots of places in the neighborhood. There is nothing off-the-cuff about my appraisal of this place, as I've given it at least a dozen chances, if not more, before forming my opinion. I know about their business only from the perspective of a customer, which is the only one that should matter to someone considering where to buy some coffee. You apparently know the business from another perspective. I notice that you're still evading the question about conflict of interest. -

Funny, you seemed to be singing a different tune when it came to bashing other coffee shops in the nabe that compete with yours...smackdown wrote: Has anyone been into that coffee shop just off the corner of De Kalb and Carlton Ave? I don’t think it has a name. They offer the worse service I have ever experienced in a coffee shop. I pulled up there yesterday, double-parked and went in for a quick coffee to go. I waited (2-4 minutes) for the guy at the espresso machine to take my order. A young lady (who turned out to be one of the employees) sitting on a stool on the customer’s side of the counter staring at me as if she’s in a trance. I saw her through the corner of my left eye. The stare was so uncomfortable I had to say something because I thought she was a customer. I said, “how is your day going,†she responded, “May I help you. â€Surprised at the response I said, “Oh, you work hereâ€? She says “yes.†I said, “May I have a latte with skim milk.†All this time the guy at the espresso machine (who I thought should have taken my order because I was standing in front of him) never once looked up at me suddenly he raised his index finger and said, â€I’ll be with you in a second. Damned! It took him 3 minutes to say that. The young woman then got up off the stool went to the cash register and rung up my order and collected $3.50 before I got my latte.
The guy at the espresso machine eventually made me a latte in a small cup. I asked him if this is the right size for $3.50, he gave me a strange look and said†this is the only size we serve.’
Do these people expect to succeed in business? The place was empty and now I know why.smackdown wrote: [quote=Nathan]Smackdown,
Nathan,
I didn't actually mean for my comment to be read as a slam.....just as a warning that if you want fast, this ain't the place to go. If you're into friendly although enforced unrushed-ness(?), you'll like it fine.
In other words, it's a fine place to go for a slow-paced relaxed cuppa coffee and a snack (and i think they've got wi-fi). Not such a good place to double park and get you jolt-o-joe to go.
You should slam the lousy customer service given by your friends if you want them to succeed. It shouldn’t matter if I went there for a quick fix or just to lounge. I am not on these boards to slam businesses just because I don’t like their service. I am here to point out the obvious – their service sucks -

Personality is no biggie. Bad coffee and terrible food is a no-no. -

What is it about this type of language which makes me suspicious? :-k -

I've never actually tasted diesel but I imagine it would taste something like Gorilla's "espress". -
I'd just like to chime in to confirm Carnivore's lack of conflict of interest with Joyce or Gamin, and to agree with his assessment of the local coffee offerings. I'll go out of my way for coffee at Joyce, but Heights Coffee is just downstairs from me and I won't bother. I also don't like Prospect Perk's coffee, but appreciate some of the savory offerings they have.
I do wish someone on this side of Flatbush would start selling Blue Sky muffins. They are my favorites, especially the blueberry. Half used to have them.
Howdy, Stranger!
