doctors in crown heights?

i promise, i did use the search function, i just didn't find much in this area...

i've got an awful sinus/ear infection and otc meds just aren't doing the trick. can anyone recommend a doctor or walk-in clinic in the area? i live on bergen near franklin and don't have a car, so anything within walking distance or an easy subway ride would be great.

i found a few places nearby- anyone have experience with them?

Don't go to the doctor in Brooklyn. Hate to say it, but if you have insurance (or even if you don't) go to Manhattan. Medical services in BK are vastly inferior. Ironically, the best care I've gotten was at a hospital in FG at the end of De Kalb--but most BK doctors/hospitals are notoriously bad. Then again, it's just a sinus infection. My suggestion is to stop eating dairy--immediately and probably permanently--and go to the park slope food coop (gotta be a member) or the Back to the Land on Seventh in the Slope, and get some Dr. Bronner's Sambuguard and some Jarrodophilus. I haven't had a cold in about two years. All organic, healthy, etc. I do eat meat...Try the garlic soup cure--lots of garlic in organic chicken broth, and some steamed veggies. Eat some raw honey/ginger tea. Good luck! There's really no need to get sick...

i disagree with annie's assessment of Brooklyn doctors, although i don't go much to the doctor because i am rarely sick (other than common colds), i haven't had any better/worst experience with Brooklyn doctors than Manhattan ones, if anything they seem a bit less stressed out!
I currently go to Dr. Carpenter in Park Slope, she is great, unfortunately i don't think she is taking any new patients, but you can give it a try (just google her).

It's interesting how Annie will criticize someone (and rightly so) for making blanket assumptions about groups of people, yet she feels free to do the same when dismissing the thousands of doctors in Brooklyn. Classic hypocrisy.

By the way, Annie, you managed to complete a post without mentioning your Ivy league credentials. Congratulations.

for UTI the best thing is to drink a lot of water, wear white underwear and loose pants. Also non-sweetened cramberry juice.

the best thing for a UTI is antibiotics. ditto for sinus infections and ear infections.

I don't think you can dismiss all Brooklyn doctors or suggest that doctors in Manhattan are better. I have had good and bad experiences in both places. I have a doctor in Brooklyn Heights who I really like -- Dr. Tuvana Bain. Short trip on 4/5 or 2/3 and a walk to Clinton.

Try Dr. Eustace Lashley in PLG. I'm pretty sure he takes HIP. I also think he's taking on new clients. I saw him a couple of weeks ago for the same thing.

Could be I'm overly influenced by things like major research hospitals--but that's just the kind of nerdy geek I am. The hospitals in Brooklyn don't score high on major medical rankings in the way the Manhattan hospitals do, but that's probably elitist and perhaps wrong. That said, I really preferred my doctors back in Boston (sorry Jack). I thought the UTI comment was a joke, but the white underwear comment was amusing. I really haven't been sick in over a year, though, so I must be doing something right--and I haven't gotten the flu in several years.
I'd love to have a good doc in Brooklyn who takes GHI, furthermore--an internist, ideally.

dr. bain came very highly recommended to me as well, from a friend who is a pediatrician (& a very good one) in brooklyn heights.

I actually did see an associate of hers: dr. elizabeth schwartzburt (at 1 prospect park west) because i read she has a more alternative approach to things and that appeals to me. since i have only seen her once, that doesn't feel like enough for me to make a recommendation, but my initial encounter was very positive and i will continue with her.

btw, i grew up in manhattan and have been known to be a bit of a snob about doctors and only going to "the best"
(i don't tend to get sick either but unfortunately have had some "scares" with serious stuff as well as a bunch of bad bike accidents)
but guess what,
when you are sick, especially if going to the doctor isn't your thing,
trucking into manhattan probably isn't going to seem like an option.
i believe this thread is about finding a capable internist not a world reknowned specialist
and i believe there are many options for that in brooklyn

yeah, world renowned specialists are overrated. They may have gone to ivy league schools, and probably think far too much of themselves...(just kidding). But you know, I have actually taken the train to Boston after being misdiagnosed and mistreated by NYC doctors, so I'm very keen on any tips, especially about alternative practitioners. Neene, where did you find this info on the "alternative' doctor?

thanks everyone for the suggestions- i waited out the worst of the cold since i really don't like going to doctors, but i may end up seeing someone since it's still dragging on. i'll check out this dr. bain first.

and i'll second the cranberry juice for the uti. good luck with that

fyi, i heard she is really good too, but be aware that she has a long waiting list. I actuallyl tried to see her a couple of times, and ended up giving up on her because i took months to get an initial appointme (which are longer) and every time i would go, i had to wait so long that had to leave (because of other commitements)

i went early in the morning as a walk in and waited about an hour
i was assured that next time i would get a legit appointment and seen (relatively, i guess) promptly
kind of trial by fire maybe, but since it took 10 minutes to walk there i figure it's about the same as 45 minutes on the subway and the standard 20 minute wait for my manhattan dr.

I also saw dr. elizabeth schwartzburt and she was very nice but I could not stand waiting for up to two hours for an appointment which I had scheduled in advance. It happened more than once and it just doesn't seem right to have to wait so long. Now I go to someone in the Methodist Med. Pavilion and I only wait maybe half an hour.

Not a doctor referral but a dentist: Samantha Ifil is a great dentist on Eastern Parkway between Washington and Classon. Her practice is called Garden Dental Arts (she's in the garden-level office of that building). She's very thorough and gentle and her staff is wonderful.
