  • the more i read about this bed bug situation the more i realize how much of a nightmare this could possible be...

    CRAPTASTIC!!!
  • I fear bed bugs more than I fear being mugged. After a mattress showed up on the sidewalk with "BEDBUGS!!!" written in big, bold, black marker, I avoided that side of the street for about a month... eesh...
  • anyone have a manual on how to sleep standing up???
  • Well, the thing to consider here, is that bed bugs don't fly. As far as I know

So, if you spray some bed bug killer around your bed frame, and around the perimeter of your floors (where the walls meet the floor) then you should have some defense against them crawling into bed with you for tonight. Go to R&A hardware on 5th and get some spray. Then call your local exterminator to check out the situation tomorrow. The experts will give you an assessment.

It sounds like you caught it early. So it might not be that bad.

    Don't Panic!
  • i suggest searching for a NY Times article a few months ago on bedbugs - there were some quotes and some advice from exterminators - if it were me, I'd hire one of them..
  • Call Ben!! He's the best exterminator on this side of the Atlantic. No joke. PM me if you want his number. You need an exterminator fast!
  • it's hard for me not to panic as i've already been bitten nearly 30-40 times in the last couple weeks...but hadn't been able to spot a damn bug anywhere.

nevermind. he hasn't. his girlfriend has. :(

just to clarify this is his girlfriend...///
  • RBG - do you mean Ben of Superior Pest? I agree! He's my exterminator too and he's great :)
  • Hey Poshspice---YES, I do mean mean of Superior. He's my private exterminator and he comes to my house one Sunday a month. He's been my exterminator for two years...and I adore him...He reminds me of Elvis circa 1970!
  • This is a potential problem I refuse to even think about. If it shows up, I'll deal with it. Until then, I refuse to acknowledge it as a possibility.

    OP: Good luck.
  • I had to move out of my place in Ft. Greene a few month ago b/c of bedbugs. I can't count how many times we had an exterminator come over. It was literally over 20 times. The entire building was infested. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. The bites are nothing compared to the psychological damage. I sympathize.
  • Can you see bed bugs? What do the bites look like?
  • hmm.. let's see

just like this but not as many, they look pretty close to mosquito bites

    btw...thats not my girlfriend...
  • I feel for your girlfriend. If there is a mosquito, spider or any other biting insect, without a doubt, I WILL be bit. However, my sweet cute boyfriend stays bite-free and blissful of my itchy painful torment!!

    Damn you boys!!!

Kinda like small ticks... round, flat... but usually you only see their bites and their waste - if you start to find little drops of blood on your sheets, that's them takin' a crapper after a big meal, just like uncle Marvin used to do.

    Actually that's incorrect [-X

They're more triangular and flat; sort of a rust-colored.

The blood stains on the sheet is a myth, not fact.

Some people do not have allergic reactions to bed bugs at all and have no signs of bites. Those folks can be sleeping with the critters and have no clue. Scary muh-fuckas.
  • According to my bud, his neighbor on Carlton btwn Willoughby and Murder in Ft. Greene dumped his bedbug-infested mattress on the sidewalk without taking ANY precautions. So, if you're in that vicinity beware.
  • I haven't seen any actual bugs, but I've had the most horrible bites on my arms, and being the allergic-to-everything gal that I am, they have swollen into huge welts that even my trusty Benadryl isn't doing anything for.

I ordered this system, I hope it works. I don't want to use anything toxic, especially having three cats.

My bedroom looks like a cross between a vintage clothing store and an antique shop, so you can imagine what a nightmare this is. Getting rid of stuff is NOT an option.

When I moved into this place a year ago I was horrified to see cockroaches (they soon disappeared, thank god), but this is the worst thing imaginable.
  • I happened to see a mattress in front of a building on my block last night. I also happened to have my bag with me, so for my own amusement I whipped out a marker (red, too) and wrote "BED BUGS!!!" on it in the biggest letters I could practically manage. I stood a good bit away in case it really was being tossed for BED BUGS.

People are coming up on that thing and giving it a wide berth or maybe even crossing the street - in my mind, at least. I wish I could see it from my window.

The last time I saw a mattress on the street it was spread out on the sidewalk as I was walking a lovely, young lady home, late one evening. We took it as an omen.

    Whoa!
For the record, it was in Park Slope that we saw the mattress; it was wintertime; and we proceeded to her place upon getting the cosmic hint.

As for the Prospect Heights Horndogs--great band or team name, huh?--did they ever find out who they were?
  • I fear bed bugs more than I fear being mugged
Me too! Good luck! See this: http://home2.nyc.gov/html/nycha/html/residents/bedbugs.shtml
