BED BUGS!?!???!

well where we failed to search, which within the box springs, it was very obvious that we have BEDBUGS. There were the size of Apple seeds and i personally saw about 10, and after that i stopped looking considering he's not coming till tomorrow to start the process. Which i might add is a pain in the ass!!!!!!!

I had bedbugs twice. Once in a dive apt in the East Village where they were coming through the floorboards from below, and once in our very clean apt in PH. AWFUL! These suckers are hearty and extermination is the best way to go. The process is a real pain but necessary. Good luck. Somehow I managed not to get bitten in two years of staying in dodgy guesthouses in Southeast Asia (but many of my fellow travellers did) but once I got home they terrorized me!
How much will he charge for extermination? Mine was $300 for 2 visits, but we got them all in 1 visit (of course, I still had to pay the full price). -
Subject: Bedbugs:DON'T EVER TAKE A USED MATTRESS/FUTON-Get an extermi
Having lived through the bedbug nightmare once myself and then second- hand (but really firsthand) with my daughter:
1- It gives you post traumatic stress disorder - really - the b. bugs in my apt. were 3 yrs. ago and I'm still so paranoid - constantly think I have them - in a different apt..
2 - I never, ever, ever take (free) or buy used: - mattresses, clothing, furniture anymore - which is too bad - since I don't have a lot of money - and like antiques and vintage clothing/accessories.
In my experience -> they're almost invisible - I swear I've never seen them. What I did see - in both my daughter's apt. and in my own - were the tiny bloodspots/specs they leave behind - sometimes on the wall next to the bed - sometimes on the quilt, etc. It's like a little 'trail'. I never smelled anything. Supposedly these spots (kind of a maroon red) have a 'sweet' odor to them.
The main problem is that they live a year without eating.
I threw away a ton of stuff (besides the mattress and bed) - had an exterminator who bombed the place. Still threw away a couple of antiques and another quilt that I'd had on the closet shelf.
My daugher - same thing -
It's not just in Bklyn. (someone else said that they're a big problem 'here' - it's throughout NYC. -
Subject: MORE BB's
OK I'm currently in the middle of a war with a bunch of bedbugs in my bedroom. after like a month of seeing weird red-brown smears on my wall next to my bed, and on my sheets, i finally saw two of these monsters just hanging out next to my boyfriend while he was asleep !
so we did a full search and destroy last night and searched every seam and nook and cranny in the mattress, box spring and frame, and washed the sheets, finding a total of about 9 bugs in various stage of development - - - from really microscopic to about the size of ticks. i was psyched and thought i had killed them all - - --
---- tonight i come from and find 6 of the bastards just walking around my bed, practically laughing at me for even trying to stop them. so i did another search and found like 6 more in the mattress and boxspring.
So obviously its time for an exterminator....my question is about landlords being legally required to pay for it after some kind of inspection? does anyone know anything about this from personal experience.
what a bummer. -
Subject: Landlord dispute over bedbugs
So I just spoke to my landlord about the bedbug problem, and he told me that it wasn't his problem at all, AND that exterminators wouldn't even do a thing to stop them anyway. I told him that, according to the NY Health Department, exterminators are basically the only way to get rid of them, and he said "I don't care what the health department says."
So I was wondering if anyone knows about the legality about a landlord paying for pest control in their building...I'm not totally sure and I can't find any information about it. I remember reading somewhere (as I mentioned in the last post), that if I get a health inspector to come and they find the bugs, the landlord is then required to take care of it within 30 days.
Anybody ?!?! -
I'd say you're right and don't pay rent until he does pay for the exterminator or pay for the exterminator yourself and deduct it.

Subject: landlord update
good news
I just called the department of health and they said that in every case of renting, the landlord is absolutely 100% responsible for taking care of any bug infestation, including bedbugs !
They said I can, and should, file a complaint, but I'd rather do it in a civil way. It's just sort of difficult when my landlord doesn't know the fundamentals of tenant's rights (though I guess I didn't either).....
this is a website the health department told me had a bunch of info...

Well, you should know that regardless of your grievance, you're not legally allowed to withhold all rent. If you've tried to fix (and document) a problem for a while you can pay for the fix yourself and take that out of the rent. But not paying all you rent is very illegal and your landlord will win that court case.
There are a few options open to you to get your landlord to fix your problem. Not paying rent is not one of them. -
Found the first bug today - wasn't in my bed, but was in a cardboard box that had at one time had abutted the bed. So, now I need an exterminator - does anyone have one that they can recommend? I'm planning on using Pest Away in Manhattan as they come highly recommended by lots of news outlets, but perhaps that's just a bit of good PR. (They're also very expensive.) Anyone have any personal experience in the matter of choosing a PCO?
Oh, and just so you know, they're in Boerum Hill, now. No idea where I picked them up from - I travel a lot but stay in nicer places. At this rate, though, I imagine everyone in NYC will have them by the end of next year.
