    * kiss babies.

    * shake hands. go out to the green market personally.
go to the train stations personally. don't send your peons

    * don't thrust flyers in my hands that makes me feel guilty 2 seconds after i read it as i shove it into the overflowing trash can

    * don't tell your local cronies to send letters on your behalf to my home

    * cultivate an attractive online presence – build an navigable web site that lets me know more and put that URL where i can read it. don't send your virtual peons

other than that i'll do my own homework and make up my own mind thank you good suggestions, except for the one that would require the candidate to have about ten clones.

Yasky does come off like a bit of a dickhead doesn't he? He cornered me at the Park Place newsstand by the Q entrance and Iasked him point blank about the Yards. he said he wasn't in favour of the present project but was in favour of a scaled down one. When I brought up eminent domain abuse his response was a barrage of babble. He somehow tied in his law school teaching or his being a lawyer (I forget which) for some years with how the only people against eminent domain were Republicans. I said "So you're for eminent domain because Republicans are against it?" He then told me how the evil GOP (which I agree with him on, they are evil mutherfuckers) is against enviromental laws, business ethics, how they're for religion in schools, etc. Not answering my question directly but telling me indirectly he will against any thing Republicans are for even if it makes sense. He does not come off as self-reliant or bright.

Literally, get on a soapbox and preach, sistah. Annoying me with handshakes (who knows what's on their hands) flyers, junk mail and invasive phone calls is not the way too go. And interupting my Farmer's Market shopping with stooges marching around with banners (like Weiner did) and asking me to sign petitions will only incur my electoral wrath and get me to vote communist.
  • raulism wrote: Oh, sweet revenge. Yassky has spent one million dollas so far, and the most recent poll gave him 20% of the vote. I doubt he can do anything more to inform the voters of how great he is, so he will probably lose. And his million dolla investment bought him nothing. :P
statistically in a 4 horse race. he'll only need 26% to win

you know what would be really great?
to hold a debate on a sunday at Grand Army Plaza between all 4 candidates.

televise it. webstream it. podcast it. whatever

but have an old style town hall debate in front of the people whom you will be representing.

if space is a concern, hold it inside the park itself

yeah, i asked him about AY at the farmers' market last weekend. at first, he seemed to make enough sense, but then he got going about how the same people who oppose eminent domain abuse oppose zoning laws and how we liberals can't ally ourselves with that. he went off on being a law professor, too. i told him that i liked to think of myself as able to hold reasonably complex thoughts in my head, like that there could be a middle ground between putting oil refineries next to schools and tearing down people's houses to build malls.

enh, i really wanted to like him.
  • I think we're on our third prerecorded call this morning.   This one, currently being recorded by my answering machine, is from Chris Owens's brother, whom I may remember as so-and-so from the Cosby show. (Huh?)

Maybe I should decide who to vote for based on who DOESN'T send me prerecorded calls.

The House Yassky is trying to join had a rare bipartisan vote for a bill that would punish state's using eminent domain. Yassky may want it to be only a conservative issue but it ain't Mr. Y.
  • I forgot to add that he (Yassky) told me to read why the Brooklyn Paper/s and the NY Times endorse him. It showed me that two things, one, he isn't able or refuses to personally explain his positions because he is either lazy or feels that he is above a voter's concern, and two, the NY Times is nothing but over bloated rag. They have no idea what is going on in the City and haven't reported anything signifigant since the Pentagon papers.
  • Since there seem to be a number of well informed people on this board regarding the candidates, mind if I ask people's impressions of Cuomo vs Green? I can't seem to get a handle on how they differ, who is better, etc. Who are people going for?

it's hard to pick btwn the guy who couldn't make local office and the guy who is stepping down from nat'l office. kinda a pathetic race, honestly.

I'm not a fan of either.
  • Hmm, it seems like everyone's in the same boat as me as being not too impressed with either candidate. Perhaps I will vote for one of the other two guys who have no shot in hell. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to vote for Green because, even though he is a HORRIBLE campaigner, I thought he was a great public advocate.

Okay, that's Yassky (thanks for the report)
Any thoughts about Andrews, Clarke Jr. and Owens Jr.? I'm feeling unimpressed . . .

Thing to be excited about this election season: a new gov!
    Spitzer in, Pataki out.
I'm going to miss Spitzer as AG tho, and share the pain on the Green/Cuomo thing.
Maloney? Maybe. I too have a long voting history of no chance in hell....

i'm gonna vote for Green because he was a great public advocate and
i feel i can trust him to do the right thing.
and the fact that the Post is endorsing Cuomo makes Green a lock :)
  • I was kind of torn on the AG race, but wound up voting for Green despite his campaigning troubles because he was such a great public advocate. Plus I hate the political dynasty thing (one reason I didn't want to vote for Owens).
  • Does anyone know of any websites that list all the candidates in our area fairly cleanly? I'd like to have a little cheat sheet ready with me when I go to the polls this afternoon.
  • all four candidates for Owens' seat are on WNYC radio momentarily . . .
  • on the AG race . . .
    I found this helpful
    http://nyblade.com/2006/9-11/news/localnews/maloney.cfm
as a recap of what's been going on in the race the last few weeks
  • Thanks, Pitu! This is good info, but I'm more looking for just a list of the candidates so I can highlight my choices before going in, just in case I blank out on any names or get any confused when looking at the ballot. So if anyone knows where I can find a list like that, I'd very much appreciate it.

    Howdee 'pollonia
I posted that for AG race info -- I haven't seen a palm card for this set of races, which sounds like what you want. Maybe the ballot is on the NYC Board of Elections site? Since there's so many districts, I don't know that you'll find one much in the one size fits all category . . .

Let me know if you find one. I am still undecided who to vote for - I wanted to go vote this morning but I figured I would look into the candidates a little more and vote after work. This is the most difficult election for me.

I'm going to guess you're registered Democrat (which frankly is the only way to go in NYC imho - primaries are where all the races get decided anyway) so you've got . . .

    NYS Gov: Spitzer or Suozzi

US Senator: Clinton or Tasini (antiwar protest candidate)

NYS Attorney General: Cuomo, Green, Maloney (there's also a Green Party primary for AG AND whoever wins in Dems and Greens will run against former WestchesterDA Jeanine Pirro)

and after that it depends on your location . . .

11th US Congressional District (House seat Major Owens is leaving)
    Carl Andrews
    Yvette Clarke
    Chris Owens
    David Yassky

District 10 (House seat Edolphus Towns wants to stay in)
    Charles Barron
    Roger Green
    Edolphus Towns

    57th State Assembly District
    Bill Batson
    Freddie Hamilton
    Hakeem Jeffries

    18th District - NYS Senate
    Tracy Boyland
    Velmanette Montgomery

did I leave anything out? Gotham Gazette is pretty helpful
    http://www.gothamgazette.com/article/issueoftheweek/20060911/200/1966#sta

I wish I knew who was who on judges races. But I didn't do my damn homework....
  • Well, I found a PDF of the list on the Board of Elections website:

    http://tinyurl.com/h8rns

    ...but it's 214 pages long!

So I finally took the Gotham Gazette's "Guide for the Last Minute Voter" (http://tinyurl.com/rabad) and just pulled out the names and pasted 'em into a Word document.

Here are, as best as I can tell, all the Democrat party candidates up today (apologies to non-Democrats - y'all can make up your own list the same way, I assume) in our neck o' the woods:

    Governor:
    Eliot Spitzer
    Tom Suozzi.

    Attorney General:
    Andrew Cuomo
    Mark Green
    Sean Patrick Maloney

    State Senate

District 18 (Bedford-Stuyvesant, Clinton Hill, Boerum Hill, Fort Greene, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Red Hook, parts of Park Slope, Carroll Gardens):
    Tracy Boyland
    Velmanette Montgomery

District 20 (Flatbush, Crown Heights, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace and Prospect Heights) Democratic primary:
    Eric Adams
    Anthony Alexis
    Guillermo Philpotts

    State Assembly

    District 43 (Crown Heights, Flatbush):
    Karim Camara
    Jesse Hamilton

District 57 (Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights, Flatbush, parts of Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant):
    Bill Batson
    Freddie Hamilton
    Hakeem Jeffries

    U.S. Senate:
    Hillary Clinton
    Jonathan Tasini

    U.S. House of Representatives

District 10 (East New York, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Fort Greene):
    Charles Barron
    Roger Green
    Edolphus Towns

District 11 (Park Slope, Flatbush, Brownsville):
    Carl Andrews
    Yvette Clarke
    Chris Owens
    David Yassky
  • D'oh! I guess we were working on our lists at the same time! :)

    Thank you, Pitu!!
