    Well at some point, people realised they couldn't make do with positive whole numbers, they needed zero. And then other people realised that to talk about debt, it helps to have negative numbers. And then other people realised that if you can have a square, you need a square root, but nobody could make a square whose size was negative. But that if you want to solve certain problems to do with triangles and also work out stuff to do with alternating current and coils and capacitors, you need trigonometry including a whole different type of numbers, the imaginaries, which you get by multiplying the square root of -1 by a regular number. And if you add an imaginary to a real, you get a complex, which is to say, you're working on a number plane instead of a number line. And that's it: no kind of number and no kind of practical problem has been found that can't be represented on the number plane.
