washington and prospect place

so i have spent some time now backtracking from page 30-something through 20-something to read about the neighborhood.

the apartment i am looking at is at 732 washington ave between prospect place and park place. does anyone out there reading this feel one way or another about that block, building, or otherwise? would one recommend the 2/3 at the museum or the b/q at flatbush? and would it make a difference in the evening hours/late nights as far as safest route?

you know, i like the idea of living on the avenue because there would be foot traffic. however, the idea of getting off at brooklyn museum at night makes me feel very nervous. i imagine it to be sort of desolate.

i am moving from astoria, off a busy avenue with 24 hour restaurant/etc and feel pretty safe, though bored, here. i've also lived in williamsburg and bushwick with mixed feelings about both neighborhoods.

Actually, I've found there are usually quite a few people around the Eastern Parkway late at night, and it's very well-lit and safe. That's the stop I usually go to if I'm coming back to the area in the wee hours. It's also much closer to your potential new place than the B/Q on Flatbush!

Is this on the C-Town side of the street?

The block isn't the greatest, but it's not horrible, either. You'd be close to plenty of transportation options - it's a quiet walk down Park Place to the Q, but don't be completely lulled, of course. The walk down Washington to the 2/3 may not look as nice, but this busy route may well be safer. You'll have to walk a few blocks for a decent grocery store. You will, however, be conveniently close to Natural Heights!

(Full disclosure - it's my wife's store.) Pretty good eating options within walking distance, too.

I live on Prospect just east of Washington, and I actually prefer to take the 2/3 at Grand Army Plaza, rather than Eastern Parkway. It really doesn't take any longer to walk there (IMO), and I find the walk to be more pleasant. Also, there are more businesses I can pop into on Vanderbilt on my way home if I need to pick something up or run an errand. Safety-wise I think you're better off using Eastern Parkway late at night, since there is better lighting and more people.

Personally, i don't find the walk to the Q to be particularly onerous either, but I do a lot of walking, so perhaps I'm just used to it.

You may not be aware that there is a shuttle on Park/Prospect between Classon and Franklin that connects to the C train. I don't have the need to use it much, but it can be handy on occasion.

You're spoilt for choice. The C @Washington, the Q/B at Flatbush, the S+C(->A/F), the 2/3 @GAP, the 2/3 at EPkwy; all good. The difference between the shortest and longest walk to any of these from said location can't be more than 5 minutes, and none involves significant danger to life and limb (with the possible exception of crossing Atlantic). So surely it depends on your destination/origin, and/or if you want to shop somewhere in particular on the way, or maybe whether you're carrying something heavy or what the weather is like.

Most days I prefer 5 minutes extra exercise down leafy blocks for 10 minutes less underground to get to midtown on the Q/B express.

Subject: I Lived on Washington for 3 years

The walk can be a little nervewracking late at night, but nothing ever happened to be. If you apartment is facing the front, you should know that its a VERY LOUD street. Lots of cardplaying late at night, blasting music, and the bus runs non-stop all night. For the first year or so, I was literally driven crazy by noise. Also, if you're moving on top of Bubbleworks--beware. Those landlords don't have the best reputation and most people I've seen have moved out after a year. Not a bad block, but not the best block either. Also, the C-TOWN on that block is downright nasty, but good in a pinch. I've seen many a rat run out of their garbage area in the early morning hours.

The apt faces the back and is on the third floor. It seemed quiet and pleasant, though I noticed the b45 was stopping there every five minutes. But again, facing the back, so...

yes it is on the c-town side of the street.

transportation seems to be equidistant for the most part. i appreciate all the advice. while the avenue is not the most attractive, the apartment is absolutely adorable and if i can't live in a brownstone or limestone, at least i've got all the eye candy nearby.
