Nothing has been decided yet on this issue. Dana Rubenstein was not telling the truth when she proclaimed off leash hours to be safe.

I found Dana's article to be biased. Hullo, I don't know how "benign" it is to allow your dogs to menace your fellow park goers and leave poo all over the place. I have been cornered by two huge growling hair-bristled off leash mutts and the owner didn't give a rip. It was terrifying, just like being mugged -- but wouldn't have qualified as an "attack" because no blood was drawn (true of many muggings as well!). Off leash dogs can be frightening, and intimidating other park visitors is not a "benign activity".

Even FIDO, on their website, admits that "many" park workers are afraid of dogs (to say nothing of park visitors!), and asks their subscribers will you pretty-please keep your loose dogs away from them? FIDO just doesn't get it. Workers, and visitors, and everyone should feel safe from dogs in our parks. Fenced dog runs are the only rational solution.

N.B. Anthropomorphization is the tendency to see human characteristics in other animals. It is a scientific fallacy,and the main reason deluded owners regard dogs as their "children", and believe they need to "socialize" with other dogs. Like they say at Fark, get a brain, morans!

What is true is the fact that the Attorney representing the City Parks Dept. (not the Juniper Park att'y, not the Off-leash att'ys) told Judge Kelly
that however he ruled in the case, the City decided anyway to begin the process of amending the Leash Law to get it in synch with the unofficial offleash policy and the Health Department. According to the City Atty., both departments have already stated they are willing to change the current Leash Law to formally include offleash hours. Judge Kelly then said that his final ruling could become moot with regard to this whole lawsuit if the City is successful in amending the current Leash Law.

FWIW, I don't think the judge will come back with his ruling for at least a month so until then we're all just gonna have to wait....

That is really sad for the dog but I don't think it proves much about offleash hours in the park. Dogs are supposed to be leashed in the parade grounds (actually, I think they're not supposed to be in there at all). A dog in the Long Meadow of Prospect Park is pretty safe from being hit by cars. I know once in a while a dog escapes from the park but really, they shouldn't be offleash anywhere if they don't know to come when they're called.

Great statistic about dog bites before and after off-leash hours started! I was wondering if there was a proven decrease. Thanks for posting
