rental car insurance
my BF and i are renting a car for the week do go out of town. neither of us have any insurance (or a car, obviously) so i know we need to purchase some of the insurance they offer.
i'm just not sure how much - i mean, is it worth the extra $25 a day (total around $225 extra on top of a $400 rental) to get all the insurance they offer?
opinions?
thanks!

An idea before you plunk down the $$:
If either of you works for a firm whose employees rent cars for company business, its contract with the rental company may include rights for employee personal use, with insurance coverage included. If so, check that company's rental price; you may do better. -
I think if you rent the car using an American Express card you can purchase insurance through AmEx cheaper than the car rental companies. But you should check on this because I am not 100% sure.

You should also check your credit card before doing it. Some cards automatically insure you for a rental car.

Yes, find out what insurance you get through your credit card. If you do have insurance through your CC, do not also buy the rental company's insurance because that will void your CC insurance, which is probably better anyway -- found this out the hard way.

There are 2 kinds of insurance the the rental companies sell. Liability and Collision. Liability protects you and them if you hit someone and collision covers the car if it is damaged.
If you rent a car in New York State rental ageencies are requiered by law to provide the minimum legal requierments for liability, buy it isn't much, only like $10,000 or something
Most credit cards now when yourent a car will pay for what's called the loss damage waver, damage to the car. You should check you card's benifits and make sure that you are covered for not only the damage to the car put what ever the rental company might charge you for the tiem the car is out of service. American Express pays both.
That said I always rented with my Am Ex card and bought the extra liabilty insurance, but not the loss damage waver.
BTW I would always rent from Hertz or Avis in Stamford CT. it's about 1/2 of what it costs on in the city and theye both have an office at the train station in Stamford and will usually let you return the car to the city at no charge to you. -

Most CC only cover the Loss Damagee Waver, damage to the car, some might not cover the 'time out of service" that you might be lible for while the damage is being fixed. I don't know of any card that cover liability insurance. While New York State requiers rental car companies to provide it, it is only the minimum legal requierments, ei, not much. Some states, like CT do not provide any liabilty insurance. -
8) I researched this a couple of months ago as I am in the same situation as you.
Most credit cards companies will cover the insurance for damage to the rental car only if you use that card to pay for the rental and you decline to take the car rental company's insurance. Double check your policy first.
Most health insurance policies cover any health issues you and your passengers experience.
The final insurance issue is what happens if you damage someone else's property. This I have to pay for and its called Additional Liability Insurance. It costs about $13 a day with Avis. -
Or, just sign up and use Zipcar, which provides your insurance (and gas) as part of the rental fee. Nothing to decide, sign, or pay separately.
