Post office problems (split from the 'cavalier cops' thread)
Subject: Post office problems (split from the 'cavalier cops' thread)
Stealing or even tampering with mail is a federal crime. If that person is caught, they are screwed. [Ed. note: James was commenting on the rumor that a PH mail carrier's wheelie bag was just stolen the other day in broad daylight - see thread: Increased crime and cavalier cops]Side rant: the Fulton St. post office is the world's worst. The first time I went there to pick up a package, a guy was there with his mom, who had had her Social Security check swiped by the carrier for the FIFTH time. Apparently this happened every time the regular carrier went on vacation, and they used a sub.

How about someone just print out this thread, and tape it to the precinct door? Could the police be embarassed into doing their jobs better?

brooklyn postal service is the worst, in general.
it takes less time for a letter to arrive from CA,then from my friend down the street.
when i moved last year i submitted my address change 1 month prior to my move (b/c i know how slow they are). i recieved my first forwarded mail (after 6 phone calls) 3 months after i moved!?
i take my mail to the city to mail. -
<post office rant>
I've heard that the Park Slope P.O. is the training ground for the NYC Post office in general. I hate those c___wipes. When I moved to PH, I filled out multiple change of address forms, called the PO on 9th street at least 5 times, called the national USPO line twice, and received one, count it, one piece of forwarded mail. Lucky I still had friends in my old building. And when I called the local office, I was told I had to call back at 7:00 AM, before the mail carrier left, because in order to get my mail forwarded, "he has to know you've moved." Their whole mail forwarding system is based on the assumption that your regular carrier will remember you've moved and put your mail in a different bin, so it can go back to the distribution office for forwarding. Do they not have computers? Have they never heard of databases? *&^%#$*#@$&;#*$&!!!!!!

Does anyone know where the mail bag was stolen from? I have been waiting for a box of checks that still haven't arrived after 10 business days. I hope they weren't in there!
Speaking of the Park Slope post office--
One time I wheeled two big packages all the way over there in the late August heat. I arrive to find a locked front door with a note on it: Out to lunch, will be back at 3pm.
Not only had EVERYONE in the post office gone out to lunch at the same time, but when I got there it was only NOON! They need a three hour lunch??
Of course, the USPS 1-800 number wouldn't do anything about it. "Do you want to file a complaint?" they asked.
"No, I want you to open the post office!"
"No one is answering the phone there, ma'm."
"Yeah, because they all left. I told you that.
"...."
"Nevermind!" (click)

I don't think that would ever happen at the Park Slope post office on 9th Street between 4th and 5th - I think it's called Van Brunt Station (not that that's any consolation to you at this point). When I lived in Park Slope I always went out my way to avoid that 7th Avenue post office --- it always seemed so chaotic.
-
Yeah, it was the 7th ave one.

speaking of post offices: anyone have problems with the adelphi (11238) station?
I've filed a couple of complaints, the brooklyn customer service center is pretty responsive. the post office kept sending mail back as undeliverable even though it had the correct address and i've lived at the same address for three years! The "test" letter i recieved from customer service was even put in one of my neighbor's boxes, even though as always it had the correct address and my name is on the box.
I can't find the number for consumer affairs, but i filed a complaint online and they called me within two days. -

That's the one on Fulton St. Hate them, hate them, hate them. The Postmaster General should court-martial the lot.

I wish I had known about that location when I went to mail some packages and was refused because I used blue tape on them instead of clear tape. The guy in front of me was refused by the same woman because he hand-wrote on the several enormous boxes he was mailing instead of using labels. -
I shipped some stuff last week using the "mailboxes etc., except not" place near the 7th ave subway station on the PS side of Flatbush. Kind of expensive, but definitely worth it to avoid having to schlepp over to that hellhole of a post office. My last apartment was a block from a really good post office and I totally didn't realize how good I had it until it was gone [FYI-not a Joni Mitchell reference :x ].

i've used that place too, a good trick is to go to ups or fedex online and print your shipping label there, then you can just go to that place and drop it off for free. (incidentally you can also do this with USPS) -

Not to derail this thread yet again, but the main problem is that the Counting Crows did a terrible rendition of "Big Yellow Taxi", and now you can't ride an elevator or shop in a Pathmark without being at risk of hearing their terrible rendition of that song. -

god, that is so true -
Sorry, I was unaware of that.
So, umm, hmm, well. Oh yea !! You know, the interminable lines in the post office really drive me BONKERS. That's why I use FedEx all the time. Think Bruce Ratner can fix it when he comes to the nabe? :P -

Not to continue to derail this thread (well actually, to do exactly that)...
I have no problem with Joni Mitchell, although I agree the Counting Crows cover is awful. On the other hand, Janet Jackson uses an extensive sample from Big Yellow Taxi (the original one) in her song Got Til It's Gone, which is actually very catchy. -
OMG i HATE the Fulton Street post office. It's so far, and so awful when you get there...at this point, we ignore package slips and just tell people to send stuff to my husband at work. And our mail carrier is MEAN. A couple of days after we first moved in, I happened to be coming through the vestibule while she was in there, and she YELLED at me for not having put a name plaque on our mailbox yet. And our mail is always crumpled up and stuffed in angrily, even if there's plenty of room for it all. And we still get mail for "Wangechi Mutu" two years later. And the "hold mail" thing never works...we come back from vacation to however many days' worth of crap crumpled into a solid brick.
HATE. -
EJ's place is on the corner of Wash. and Prospect.
Prices compare to the one on Flatbush (Excellent), but I'm just supporting the local business -
Yes, I recommend the place on Washington and Prospect for basic postal stuff. I can't remember the owner's name, but he's very sweet and periodically hosts rockin' parties in the store on weekends. Support the community postal store!
Only drawback- cash only. -
They are the absloute worst. I have called a dozen times to get packages redelivered and they have never once done it. They tell you they will but then it just never comes. You always have to pick it up.
One time I went to pick up a package that was addressed by my first name, Bill. When I showed my license as ID it said William - my legal name. The woman says to me: Who's this? She was not going to give me my package because 1) she had never heard that Bill and William were the same peron and 2) I had no ID that said Bill on it. I tried to explain to her that they were the same (never mind that the last name and the address on the pckage and my license were the same). Finally other people in line started yelling at her that yes, they were the same name (as this was now going on about 5 minutes). Then she decided to ask others behind the counter. After confirming with three other people that Bill and William were the same she gave me my package.
Another time after standing in line for 25 minutes to pick up a package the clerk goes to get it and comes back in about 30 seconds and says its on th e truck for redielivery, it's not here. I said I didn't ask for redelivery because you never do it, please look again. She disappears for about 5 minutes and comes back and tells me that I need to talk to the truck driver because it's not there. I started getting pissed and ranting about how I just stood in line for 25 minutes and you want me to come back and do it again? She says that when I come back I can go to the front of the line. I say, Right - I'm gonna walk in here to the front of the line because you said it's OK and all those other thirty people waiting for a half hour aren't going to killl me? Are yopu crazy? She says well I don't know what to do, It's not here. I ask her to go look again. (Mind you that there is only only other window open and I have now been t this one for at least ten minutes. People on line are getting pretty ticked off.) This time she disappears for ten minutes and low and behold comes out with my package. Total time to pick up 1 package that should have required about 3 minutes - about 45 minutes. What a bunch of incompetents. -
Sounds like every other trip I've made to the Fulton Ave. USPS station. And no, they do not follow USPS procedures - package redelivery never happens, as Dr. F said. You get one shot, that's it, otherwise back to the service counter and 30 minutes of standing in line, listening to the Clear Channel "cool jazz" radio station cranked up to 11.

Subject: Where and how to complain.
There does not seem to be a good online form to use for the Office of the Consumer Advocate, which is the area of the USPS devoted to dealing with complaints above the local level. It's my opinion that if we complained at the post office itself, we'd get a hearty "FU."
That having been said, if you are willing to deal with snail mail, a letter to the address below will get the attention of USPS management (yes, there is such a thing). I'm considering just printing out this thread and sending it, but individual recountings of problems likely would have more effect. Anyway, here's the info:

Another thing you can do is just write to the "Postmaster" of the zip code in question. You wouldn't think that would necessarily work, but I was once having a lot problems in my old neighborhood (I lived at 86 3rd Place, and got mail for 86 1st Place, 86 2nd Place, 86A 3rd Place, but not my mail, which was mostly received by the people at the aforementioned addresses). I wrote to the postmaster to complain about the mix-ups, and the situation immediately improved. Of course, that was a specific problem related to mail sorting, not a general problem related to the attitudes of employees.

Subject: Adelphi PO = Adummy PO
I haven't let the Adelphi post office send a package to my ACTUAL apartment in six months. I don't know if its happened to any of you, but they would neglect to leave the pink pick-up-your-package slips. There were too many times when I went to the post office, just knowing that my package was there, even though they didn't leave a slip. Lo and Behold, it was always there, and of course they gave ME a hard time because I didn't have a slip. Hmmm, I wonder why?? -
It does seem like there isn't a good form online for complaints. But i used the form they had and got a quick response as i stated in an earlier post. In fact the woman who i dealt with from Brooklyn Consumer affairs called me again this week to see how my mail delivery was. If you can get in touch with them, i've found them to be really helpful. But still, they just can't seem to put the mail in the right boxes in my apartment building. Its really maddening.
