804 Bergen st
There's a new development going up on Bergen st. There are drawings here:
http://www.scaranoarchitects.com/ click on the multi-family section and it's the first one listed.
It's a very modern looking building, not sure how well it will fit in.

It should be illegal to put such a morern building in such an old neighborhood. There has got to be a way to landmark the area and stop these greedy developers from ruining it with there poorly made "new construction" buildings. Shame on who ever moves in!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip. I like how they describe it as a "visual bridging between adjacent properties" because it sure as hell doesn't blend in. How did you find out about this - was it in a local paper or something?

Heres a great website for new developments/real estate in Bklyn.

I found this on the wiredny forum, actually I just found the link to the scarano website and then notice the bergen dev project. I walked by the lot last weekend and saw that a 5-story bldg was going up but didn't know anything about it.
There are also pictures of the washington/underhill condos on this site. I think it looks very institutional with the yellow brick and green windows. It reminds me of a school or hospital, I don't know why they chose that design.
I must say that I'm not very impressed with the work this firm does. Some is nice but rarely does it fit in to the fabric of a neighborhood. I can only imagine what some of these modern buildings will look like in 30 yrs once their age starts to show. Brownstones and the like age well but I can't imagine that this modern style will. -
Subject: condophobia
I love the passionate and irrational fear of any new residential development that is always expressed on this website. If you want to live in a neighborhood of empty parking lots, abandoned industrial buildings, and shelled out residences guarded by pit bulls, there are plenty of options for you in the industrial midwest. Having lived here in Prospect Heights for 10yrs, the vitality of this neighborhood right now is absolutely exhilaritng. For example, the people living in the Daily News building have breathed some much needed fresh air into my neck of the woods. That used to be a totally spooky and dangerous wasteland down there. And really -- we could do far worse than Richard Meier. -
I don't read fear of new development, only dismay at the architectural styles being chosen over and over not visually fitting in or with the existing buildings. I have never met a single PHer who was anti-development. Totally agree about the vitality here now!

Fair enough. This building isn't too bad though in my mind. Check out the squatty little brick box with overly aggressive metal trim that they built across the street from this building. Thats the kind of architecture we must fear -- cheap piece of crap. Or those multi-family houses they built across from the school across from Tavern on Dean -- wretched! Its all in the eye of the beholder, but I thought this new building was pretty decent.

I like the multi family houses. They make me think I live in Canarsie without having to actually live in Canarsie.
-
I agree with Isa. In fact, I think that every neighborhood should have a little touch of Canarsie.

Huh? Canarsie is suburban. The new buildings are clearly very urban. -
Canarsie is not suburban. How do you figure? Its projects and then some nice old houses but mostly those brick box rowhouses that look identical to the ones we are talking about, only a few decades older.

Most of Canarsie is one to three family homes from the 1940's and 50's. Many even have driveways and yards. Canarsie even has suburban-style shopping centers. I bet you most Canarsie residents have cars.
Whether or not you like the new buildings in PH, they are all clearly urban and environmentally sustainable, since they are multifamily buildings with streetwalls and no parking.
Also, Scarano loves to build glass-walled modernist apartment buildings.
I am certain there are no such buildings anywhere in Canarsie. Frankly I like the building design. Looks like a better than average addition to the neighborhood. -
Jack and I are talking about the buildings that phlster originally posted about, not the new buildings.

I am happy that was a misunderstanding because I lived in Canarsie for the first 10 years of my life and was about to question my entire existence. -
I'm with you, Isa. My sister lives in a real suburb and it looks nothing like Canarsie. Maybe we could start a movement to convince developers to mimic Canarsie architecture in Prospect Heights.
