New to BedStuy...

I vote that we start making a distinction between North Stuy and South Stuy, with the dividing line being Lafayette Avenue. Actually Bed-Stuy should be divided into micronabes, because when someone refers to Bed-Stuy it almost lacks meaning because the neighborhood is so huge. I can't understand why the micronabe concept isn't applied to this area of Brooklyn. In any case, what say you, Goldi? Are you a North Stuyer or a South Stuyer?

uh oh... here we go.Guest, my distinction was not meant to be divisive but informative. No static here. It's just that saying you live in Bed-Stuy doesn't really tell me if you're my neighbor or not. For me, the area down by Fulton might as well be Staten Island because it's so far from my house. When new businesses open up in BS I get excited, until I find out that they are on the other side of the neighborhood, because that means that they are not in my area and I probably won't be visiting them. If 'locs wants to ask questions about BS, she'll have to tell us her general location. I thought a north/south distinction would help clarify things a bit without giving out too much information. I am a North Stuyer, a star-bellied Sneech, if you will.

Okay, I'm glad to have new neighbors and I'm happy you are finding my home nabe to be to your liking. But there are just some things that you guys can't change. The delination of the nabe is one of them. Please, please, please, let this die a quiet and peaceful death.

i absolutely agree that bs needs to be broken down into smaller named neighborhoods, just as almost every neighborhood in nyc has done. it won't affect the history or the fabric of bs, it will only help it by making it easier to navigate...it is HUGE. even if it's north stuy/west stuy/east stuy....something to give some clarity to the people who live there and for those who don't. don't fight it!!!

I'm on the A/C lines between Fulton Avenue and Madison Street. Honestly, I'm still trying to figure out the whole neighborhood naming game, though I think I'm smack in the middle of BedStuy, you true Brooklynites, may know better. So, feel to correct me. I can hardly wait until the warmer weather so that I can walk and truly see "where I'm at." Right now, your lively posts on the subject are very enlightening.

Re: DIVIDING THE NABE INTO SECTIONS:
I've noticed that there are a lot of liberal-minded folks in the Historic Distric, whereas people near Brownsville seem more conservative, so: RED-STUY, BLUE-STUY.

OR,
Everyone praises historic Stuyvesant Heights while blasting quality of life issues near the projects, therefore: BEDnBREAK-STUY, PIG-STUY.

YET STILL,
The historic Heights area has a century-old tradition of being home to black strivers (Weeksville), while the north section will be an attractive spill-over to Bushwick/ Williamsburg
hipster/ newcomers. So: BLACK-STUY, WHITE-STUY.

No matter how you slice it -When you begin to bisect a neighborhood while in the midst of aggressive gentrification - you carve out issues of race and class.

As in the real world I will not defend myself or the police/admins will try to lock me up. 8)

Admins, might not be a good business move to shut down your most popular thread that isn't related to a daily human function.

Don't feel bad Guru. I am actually from an island. It has come to the point that our island has 2 forums;one for the locals and one for the tourists. The tourist one is censored very much like this one is. Locals are not allowed to say anything about how we feel. Only allowed to talk about white owned restaurants and villas and stuff. Guru, I think you're a bit confused about what censorship is. Censorship is when the government limits speech in a public forum. Internet bulletin boards like this one are PRIVATE forums -- this site is owned and paid for by a private individual, and the users are essentially guests here and by using this site agree to follow its rules.

And if you'll check out the rules -- handily available at the "THE RULES" link at the top of every page of this site -- they're not really that onerous.

Here are two examples to try to illustrate this in a way you can understand:

Say you're standing on a public street corner peacefully holding a sign that expresses whatever your political view is, and a cop arrests you. The sidewalk is a public forum, you're being prevented from exercising your First Amendment rights by the government, and that fits the definition of censorship.

Now, then, say you go to a party at Joe Schmoe's apartment, and you get into a screaming match with another party guest in the living room. Joe Schmoe tells you that you both have to cool it or else he's kicking you out of his apartment. Joe's apartment is a PRIVATE forum, Joe isn't the government, and he is within his rights to place limits on what can happen in his living room. That is NOT censorship. And that's analagous to what was happening in the other threads here.

I've already explained why I locked the threads I did. They were WAY too out of control. Folks are welcome to discuss the topics that were being raised; they simply need to do so more civilly, without the nastiness and name-calling. I'm sorry if you can't understand that, but it isn't censorship.
