local movers — Brooklynian

local movers

hi everyone -

i'm moving from a share on st. johns to a studio on washington, and i'm in need of a local (reliable, inexpensive, trustworthy) mover for as soon as next week. going from a 2nd floor to a 4th floor, both walkups.

does anyone have the name/number for a company/service you've used in the area and can recommend?

thanks a million.

  • Small move? Call Armchair.
  • I'm basically moving a bedroom (bed, bookcase, cd bookcase, dresser, desk, air conditioner, stuff), a closet full of clothes, an armchair, a tv, and a set of dishes/kitchen stuff. I have no idea if that's small. :) Do you have contact info?
  • if you search the board, you can get the number to Wong Movers. I've used them for all of my moves in NYC except for when I was outrageously broke and conned my friends into helping me. the most expensive move I had with them was around $300 but at that point I had a lot of furniture (bedroom and living room) and like 30 boxes, most of them books. and they were moving me into a 4th floor walkup.

but yeah, small move, try PMing armchair
  • thanks everyone! i think it might be bigger than an armchair move, and wong movers looks highly recommended so i might try them out (although i'm curious how you all found out about them in the first place - i can't seem to google them anywhere).
  • I think they're family owned and probably not insured. I found out about them from a friend of mine when she was moving out of med school housing. apparently most of the students used them to move out when they graduated.
  • in case you see the signs posted all over the neighborhood and are tempted, just a warning to avoid the people who advertise $18 per man--it's a lie and they're thieves.

for the details on my experience with them, see this thread:

also, you can find a bunch of stuff on local movers here:

  • Subject: Movers not shakers!

Call Movers not Shakers. Mark is the boss. Flat rate, good price.
  • alafairnadia, do you have a number for wong? Can't find them anywhere.

Does anyone have suggestions for moving for $300 or less? I"ll have two people to help load and unload, just need an actual truck and some more manpower. It's just one bedroom's worth of furniture.
  • related note - where do we like buying boxes in PH?

need probably 10 small, 5 mediums and larges.
  • I really liked All-Star. They did my move and they were awesome.

Do check out the tips and the message board on www.movingscam.com. They, and the folks on the message board, know what to ask, what to look for and will tell you who to avoid.

    good luck with your move.
  • i'll second the recommendation for movers not shakers. they moved me on one of the hottest days of the year and still had the job done in just a few hours. i had also severely underestimated the amount of furniture i had, but they stuck to the flat rate they'd quoted me anyway. of course, i tipped them more than enough to make up for the difference, so i'm not suggesting you screw them over! but they're good guys and get the job done well and quickly.
