Fitness classes?
I'm a petite gal who's getting a little blubbery with the cold weather and not wanting to go out in the winter weather and all
Are any of you taking total body fitness classes or workout classes that help you stay in shape and where can I sign up for them? Somewhere walking distance to 7th and Union would be fantastic.
Kickboxing, pilates, spinning, etc.
Oh, and please..no gym memberships. I don't have one and I don't want one. I want something I can go to once or twice a week, sweat, feel all sore and energized, then go home and eat cookies

HAHA!! i like your style, Guestella! welcome to the boards and thanks for making me laugh

If you don't want a gym, I think your options are limited. You could check out the Park Slope Fitness Collective on 7th Ave. around 11th Street. You can sign up for individual classes without buying a membership. I haven't tried their classes, but I've heard good things about their personal trainers. And there's always yoga.
-
I go to the Y - there are lots of classes and they're all included with the membership fee. So I can go every single day if I want (nope, I don't want). It's cheap! Cheap, I tell you! and the facilities have just been renovated, so it's quite nice.

Thanks pitu, I checked out the links and I have concluded that:
1) You folks are very resourceful and I like this site already
2) I think it's best I stay away from Slope H&F.
Hey shishkab, gotta love em cookies! -

ilovecarbs!
yes, do register and stick around!
here's an old martial arts/fitness thread for you, school info if you scroll down a bit
http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=957
The CAE place just moved to 7th St near 5th Ave, and they have a martial arts-based fitness class Monday nights taught by a lovely woman named Delia. People looooove her. Everything else there is karate or tai chi.
Two of my pals love the spinning woman at The Bank (5th Ave and Union.) I don't know what their per-class deal is, and I know they have at least one good yoga teacher but the hours of her classes never worked for me. I like the dudes that run the place although I'm not a member.
I swim - at Berkeley-Carroll. You buy a punch card for 20 visits, and they have a limited machine room. -
Hmm i was thinking of the Y, but the walk is a wee bit far from where I live. I think I'll check it out though
-
=D>
okay, ilovecarbs.... in my opinion i think you just HAVE to register. you're funny AND clever we could use another voice like your's. why don't you skip the "guest" status and jump straight to "newbie", eh? please feel free to join, y'hear? cuz that response was just spot on! -
Oh spinning is perfect and I can walk there! Could you ask them what her name is and how I can contact her? Thanks.
-
I'm a member at The Bank (it's also called Body Reserve) on 5th and Union. The spinning and yoga teachers ARE very good, as is the pilates teacher. And people seem to LOVE the spinning. But I'm pretty sure they don't allow for a per-class deal (I've asked for friends in the past.) That being said, it's pretty much the cheapest gym in the neighborhood. It's pretty bare bones... you don't get a fancy locker room or anything. But it's never over-crowded and the people are very nice. I have no problems lifting my little 5 lbs weights right next to the dude who is bench-pressing. It's very live and let live, in my opinion.
The guys who run the front desk are Butch and Eduardo. They're both very nice, I'd try talking to them about just wanting classes... maybe they'll give you a deal or something? -

okay - for you, I called
My friend likes both of the Bank spinning teachers
Danielle (tues/thurs/sat am) and Emily (a couple of nights)
Danielle is the one that I remembered hearing about -- high energy, some times really good (and varied )music
just stick your head in and talk to the guys at the desk -
Thanks pitu. I'm gonna walk over there now and talk to the guys at the front desk.
The of course, return home to finish that box of oreos. -
if you walk extra fast, you can make it double stuft

Okay folks, this thread is getting bogged down by the shill discussion, so we are splitting it off. Fitness discussion remains here.
If you want to keep talking about shilling, or talking about Slope H&F, head to Board Administration.

All further shilling (and discussion of shilling) will be removed from this thread,
so please cut it out!
thank you!

The Management -
I love the Management. I'm glad that this thread is not being swallowed by the shill police discussion.
Anyway, I went down to Body Reserve..the guy behind the desk was really helpful and it's a very laid back place. I was expecting some sort of hulk hogan shrine..but it was very welcoming. While I can't take just classes without a membership but I did the math and it's still worth it.
I've got me a guest pass and I'm gonna try the spinning class on Monday! -
This thread has just justified my post-yoga baking and it feels oh so good.
Thank you all.
-
step 1- engage in yoga/pilates/spinning
step 2 - indulge in baked goods minus the guilt
step 3 - nap time -
I find that ice cream works equally well in step 2 of that formula - I can't be alone on that.
Mint chocoate chip? Yes, please. -
I use a mint chocolate chip bubble bath from Sephora's. You can't eat it (well maybe you could, but I would pass) but I keep sniffing myself on the subway while the onlookers look at me like I'm a weirdo.
Better to pretend to be the weirdo that have to deal with the real weirdos in this world
-
okay, since y'all mentioned mint chocolate chip ice cream, i felt it was my duty to inform you that i recently had dinner at Rosewater. for dessert, my hubby ordered mint choc. chip ice cream with biscotti. it was, by far, some of the finest ice cream i've ever tasted, and i am someone who makes her own during the warm months. it's not that bright green, fakey-mint tasting stuff (not that there's anything wrong with that. some folks lurv it that way so to each his own). it was picked-fresh-from-the-plant mint and it was delightful. just sayin'. =P~

Guest,
You can workout at home with a great personal trainer/pilates instructor. I've been working out with him for over a month, great results.

Thanks Isabella, but I really prefer taking group classes with friends. I've tried personal training and it wasn't for me.
On another note, don't you love how the thread has morphed from "where to get the best exercise" to "where to get the best dessert'?
I love these people! -
I love the turn this thread has taken. Particularly because my knowledge of desserts and where to find them is much more comprehensive than spinning.
Not to say that I don't advocate exercise, I am loyal to my yoga classes after all.. but still.. -
Subject: running is the best
I know everyone here wants to exercise inside in winter but I have to say that running in the park in winter is WONDERFUL. I wasn't a big runner at all and hate the cold but I bought some warm clothes and now love it. I was getting flabby but lost 3 inches and 3 pounds in a month. AND it is cheap. -
I was considering joining the Park Slope Runners. They run in the park too.

how about Park Slope walkers? i dunno if a club exists, but if you're like me and you are not physically capable of running the 3 plus miles 'round the ring, i'm available to do a fast walk with ya! it's usually just me and my iPod, and i'm a total wimp when the weather gets cold like this, but i'd be up for some company.
-
I prefer walking too, shishkab. Lately I've been doing yoga at home because of the cold (and on weeknights, because it's so dark), but I'd love to have a walking buddy and get back out there on the weekends. What do you think?

I'm down. I just need to get some new gear. Walking is my favorite exercise! -
awesome, girls!
okay, here's the thing: i am going away on vacation starting next week and will be back beginning of march. let's revisit this when i come back. i'll try to remember to PM you two. i am posting this message in the thread, however, just in case anyone else might be interested. sound alright? -
I'm moving soon, so this actually works out better for me. And I'll be glad to get some fresh air after all the time I spend packing and unpacking!
Enjoy your vacation. I hope you're going somewhere fun - and warm.
Howdy, Stranger!
