Where can I buy a music box? — Brooklynian

Where can I buy a music box?

Okay, so I know I'm lame and I only show up when I need something, but let's move beyond that for a moment.

I'm looking to buy a music box as a wedding present for two friends who are getting married and I was wondering if anyone knows of someplace in Brooklyn where I could find something. I'd like to patronize a local artist like they taught us at my fancy liberal arts college. I'm looking for something unique and romantic, not kitschy or touristy. I haven't decided yet if the music box will be the whole gift, of it will be something small that I give in addition to a check, so my price range is flexible. Any tips would be appreciated.

Did you check the antique stores around the nabe?
  • try calling artek (it's on atlantic avenue) - they may have something. I was there a few weeks ago and kinda feel like I saw a music box there. I could be making it up.
  • Cog and Pearl on Fifth Ave
I don't know if any of the groovy artistes of felt and metal they represent are making music boxes, but it's worth calling over there . . .

    that place and
Matter, also on Fifth Ave, are my go-to places for special presents that would excel at super coolio art school...
  • if you do not find anything in the 'hood there is a really great place on 18th Avenue and 67th Street called Berta they sell beautiful collectors items from names like Lenox and Lladro as well as local artisans.
  • Thanks, I hit Matter, Cog and Pearl, Extraordinary and Clay Pot in the Slope last weekend. Clay Pot had one that is in the running, but I just wasn't in love with it enough to give it as a wedding present. I came up empty at the other places, although Extraordinary had a few suitable for a baby's nursery.

I think the local antique shops are a good route and I'll make a note of any other places in Brooklyn that I can cover this weekend.
  • I just saw that your price range is flexible - in that case I have one word for you
