Union Hall-Blessing or Curse?

Oh, I know, I'm not objective. I don't necessarily see drinking in a negative light; I mean, I drink myself. But I still think there are aspects of adult life that children should be shielded from, and I can't see how it would be fun to go to a bar with kids in tow.

i like it cuz i got a book there once.

I barely visit this site anymore mainly because of the utterly ridiculous small-business politics that seem to dominate the topics.
Congrats on having Gawker pick up on the innanity! It's the cyber-equivalent of a bunch of yentas sitting in front of a building and kvetching about nonsense... BUT IN CYBER FORM! -

I had the same thought about both lengthy Guest posts in praise of this bar. -

Oh, come ON! Can't we take anything at face value anymore? I'll take 500 well-reasoned, thoughtful words over 25 snippy and myopic ones any day (see the now-ridiculous PS children thread for virtuosic snippiness and myopia all around). I'd spend 500 words to defend an institution I patronize and admire, if it would quell 125 previous ill-informed and damaging posts--not that it ever would, on this board. But it's worth a try, right? Don't give up the good fight.
Just my 2 cents.
PS. I've never been to Union Hall.
-
Sorry about that. Please, go back to theorizing the only people who write positive things about places are owners or vested in the busisness.
PS: Anyone know of a good dry cleaners? Or what's up with Tea Lounge! And those strollers!

First of all, the poster criticized people here for having too much time to counter-post and then went 500 words in the process. Huh?
Secondly, "ill-informed" posts according to whom? Has it occurred to you that certain posters might be privy to details that inform their opinions but aren't at liberty to discuss them fully, in order to not betray someone's trust on a public cyber forum? Surely, not every one--not by a long shot--falls into this category, but...
Lastly, the repeated instances of management/ownership etc raving about their incredibly wonderful establishment while masquerading as "patrons" of said joints on this board--and not doing a good job of it, btw--has made taking this sort of post at face value quite difficult. -

Well said. I believe a patron could like a place so much they'd spend the energy to defend it...but I think someone like that would also register and post in other threads here. -
I will defend it! No one else in this city will book Buckner. That is bullshit. Therefore, a place that books a man such as he is an okay place with me!
Chin up!Chinup! an awesome band from Chicago. Tons of underground press......where do they play? Union Hall.
Dean Wareheim of Luna........Union Hall.
Fuck that shit, the place isn't worthy of going to. It is intimate in that small room, as Maxwell's used to be.
Stop dissing the place, at least as far as its musical bookings go. It's an amazing space considering who plays there and the waiting list allowance.
Mkeys, maybe your shit just sucks. That's why your bitter, yeah? You shit on me for Swan Lake and other shit. I just wonder what makes your musical expertise/experience worth more than mine or anyone elses? Have you played there? Or are you just upset you can't?
It's really convenient to shit on their "bookig policies" when they book amazing bands, of which yours is not even in the realm of Buckner.
Townes Van Zandt is also a shitty songwriter, right, MKeys?
You are my boy when it comes to the Yankeees, but I'm baffled about your musical taste/decsions of going to a place to hear/see music. -

I don't know what the hell set you off but before you go insulting people, LeeHo, you should get your facts straight.
First and foremost, I've NEVER "shit on" you or anyone else here. Just one glance at my posts and you'll see that I make the extra effort not to, regardless of how heated the discussion may get. I believe an apology is in order.
I've NOT dissed WHO they book but HOW they go about it over at UH. (Btw, speaking of Dean Wareham, didn't Luna play their farewell shows at Southpaw? And when have you EVER read a dis on Townes Van Zandt from me? Where the hell did you get that from?!)
"No one else in this city will book Buckner."
Are you ABSOLUTELY sure about this? Do you know for a fact if there hasn't been some undercutting/foul play at work in his or any other instance? DO YOU?
Listen, it's not my place to go into details about any of this since I'm not a spokesperson for the competition and/or artists that have their reasons for feeling slighted. They can handle their own defense. And trust me, from what I've heard, their reasons are NOT petty. Before you grandstand and smear people you might want to find out for yourself and then talk to me about it. IN A CIVILIZED MANNER. Jeez.
As far as me, personally, UH has no bearing on my professional life. I've perfomed for THOUSANDS in various countries and here in the US. Performing at UH is not going to give me anything I haven't already acheived and not playing there will not deprive me of anything either, so your accusations of bitterness have no bearing on me, either way. Not that you cared to inquire or know anything about me. Fine, sling away.
Great...name-calling and baseless personal accusations. A fine way to make a point. Godwin's Law will probably be invoked anytime now. Thanks for a wonderful exchange. -
Relax. MKeys, I'll probably give you Yanks tix some day.
You did shit on the music I prefer....go back to that post of "New Music...."
I didn't mean to come across so poorly. Forgive me for doing so. Yet, it seems like the place you disagree with at the time and how they book people simply gives you the opportuity to crush it. That's all I'm saying.
I'd assume that Joe's pub would love Buckner and they can pay way more than UH can. I'm assuming that artists also prefer to play in Brooklyn. If UH pays more than Southpaw versus another venue thier size, than so be it. Perhaps they're filling a much needed void and have the money to do so.
Forgive what I said towards you. I"ve never heard your band/you.
On the record, you are right. I idirectly attacked your animosity, not you, towards a place that consistently bills decent bands.
Give me something to listen to and then I might have a "formed" opinion.
Nonetheless. You are a soul who appreciates baseball. Whatever. Call this a pop-up on my part and let a centerfielder catch it and throw me out rounding third. -
Mod note:
Okay, LeeHo, thanks for apologizing but you already KNOW that personal attacks are not kosher on this site. So please don't do it again.
MichaelKeys, thanks for responding without resorting to personal attacks yourself.

Hey, I'm the booker at Union Hall, look at me!
No, really, you guys are totally entitled to your opinions and thanks for the people who said nice things. I have to say I've been having a blast working with EVERYONE at Union Hall, it's a very nice group of people and I hope that shows for anyone who comes in. It's convenient that I wanted a place like this a few blocks from my house for a few years, so it's like having a huge living room where amazing bands come to play.
Definitely come in to see an event though, especially before you judge. We have a Science club, spelling bees, comedy every Sunday night, and of course, some pretty cool bands.
I think, like a lot of places in NYC, even some of my faves, it can get claustrophobic for the locals on weekends. But, the weekends are for amateurs anyway, no? At least that's what they've been telling me since I moved to NYC in 1987.
Best, Skippy/Union Hall -
hey kids,
i was the "lengthy Guest post" in praise of the bar. i am NOT an owner, nor would i ever want to be a owner of ANY bar. why? because it's a shit-ton of work, AND you have to put up with worlds of bullshit (see all posts above). trust me, the owners of that place don't have time to waste reading this ridiculousness.
i'm not going to join your message board. i saw the article on Gawker, read the stuff that had been posted thus far, and added my own. i felt the need to defend the place, as i know a few of the hard-working staff pretty well from previous bar gigs and have the inside scoop. if you don't like the place for legitimate reasons, cool. but i just couldn't sit idly by while some of you made up garbage.
sorry to those of you who don't like the place, i hope you find some other awesome local hangout that rules. -
Anonymous wrote: if you don't like the place for legitimate reasons, cool. but i just couldn't sit idly by while some of you made up garbage.
I'm not sure what you think was fabricated -- people here are discussing the venue as a *venue*, not as a place they have an interest in because their friends work there OR because they have a competing commercial interest. You sounded like you were defending the place for reasons that had nothing to do with being a patron or a neighbor, so people called you on it.
It's great if Union Hall is responding to the neighborhood feedback, and they can see some UNVARNISHED public opinion on this board (hi Skippy!) if they want to check in... -
i think the over-the-top anti reactions to the place have almost turned me in favor of this too precious Disney-fied barn.
next time my on the block living friends suggest it, i won't recoil. -
Hey, Union Hall aka "this too precious Disney-fied barn" in TimeOut
Even the owner doesn't want to be there on weekends . . .
"Even Carden favors a chill Monday night at his own bar to the
weekend fray. That’s because on Friday and Saturday “crowds make it
crazy, especially around the bocce-ball court,â€
The article is titled: "We’re crushed"TimeOut NY wrote:
Thanks to hordes of carpet-bagging booze hounds, Brooklyn bars are
fast becoming weekend no-fly zones.
By Joshua M. Bernstein
On a recent Saturday at midnight, foot traffic and taxis were scarce
on Brooklyn’s Court Street. But inside Abilene, a narrow corner
saloon in Carroll Gardens, a Manhattan-worthy cattle-car bar scene
thrives. Guys in silk-screened tees and pretty girls in ballet flats
stand elbow to elbow, jostling for pints, their requests deafened by
an indie-rock soundtrack.
“This,†says regular Ben Haas, 32, “is why I usually avoid Fridays
and Saturdays. Give me Sundays with seven people at the bar.â€
A common annoyance in the East Village or the Lower East Side, the
weekend crush is a new phenomenon in Brooklyn. Just a few years ago,
the borough’s Tuesday and Saturday bargoing experiences were nearly
identical: Drinkers could go out with a fair amount of certainty that
a night of tippling would be a calm one. Want mayhem? Go to
Manhattan. Want to relax? Stay in Brooklyn.
“As a Brooklynite going into the city on weekends, I was like, ‘What
are we doing? Let’s just go back and hit our favorite bars,’†says
Jim Carden, co-owner of Floyd, NY and Union Hall, a Park Slope spot
notorious for attracting Meatpacking-scale throngs (a line to enter
the two-story space is not uncommon).
It’s no secret that Brooklyn is swelling with trendy, single
residents who would have opted for a downtown Manhattan address a
decade ago (or today, if they had the funds). In step with the
migration, there’s been a wellspring of destination hangouts with
eclectic jukeboxes and hipster brews (Pabst, Brooklyn Lager on tap).
Spots like Williamsburg’s Union Pool, Great Lakes and Buttermilk in
Park Slope, and Gowanus Yacht Club and Brooklyn Social (Carroll
Gardens) have not only provided Brooklyn’s weekend partyers with a
reason to stay local, they’re luring Manhattanites across the East
River.
With dual bocce courts, bands playing on the basement stage and
couches galore, Carden’s Union Hall is irresistible to early week
patrons who use the space to read, booze and kick back. Even Carden
favors a chill Monday night at his own bar to the weekend fray.
That’s because on Friday and Saturday “crowds make it crazy,
especially around the bocce-ball court,†says Carden. The lines to
play are so long, with arguments sometimes erupting about whose turn
it is, that “we should rent a lifeguard to sit on a ladder and call
out people’s names.â€
While bocce players overwhelm Union Hall, the twin lures at
Williamsburg’s warehouse-size Barcade—vintage arcade games and
unusual microbrews—foster a perfect storm for weekend mob scenes. The
cavernous space can feel empty on a Wednesday even with 40 people at
the bar, but weekend visitors, beware. “The last time I was there on
the weekend, we couldn’t play any games,†says Geoff Stearns, 28,
East Village resident and a Barcade fan. “Even the crappy games were
taken.â€
But this isn’t about special attractions—even conventional bars have
become overwhelmed. When Boat opened on Smith Street in 2000, Justin
Trout, 35, of Clinton Hill, laid claim to the comfy dive. “We made
Wednesday nights our long-standing, no-phone-calls-necessary
hangout,†says Trout, who also drank there on Fridays. Nowadays, he
keeps his Wednesday tradition, but says “prime weekend hours are
definitely times to flee.â€
Ryan Pederson of Prospect Heights echoes the sentiment. The 29-year-
old rarely patronizes beer-and-burger bar Soda, because “it’s changed
from a beloved neighborhood hangout to a place that’s packed
regardless of the service. Good luck getting a drink if you’re
sitting at a table when Soda’s busy.â€
Other places are tolerable only at capacity. Since opening last fall,
Greenpoint’s Studio B has become a mecca for rock concerts and dance
parties. “The more people there, the better,†says Rebecca Smeyne,
editor-in-chief of myopenbar.com. “No one’s forcing you to stand on
the dance floor.â€
And who can fault revelers for patronizing decent bars? Even crammed
Brooklyn hangs may be better than the alternative.
“I was recently in the Lower East Side during a weekend, and I was
like, ‘What am I doing?’ It looked like New Orleans during Mardi
Gras,†says Barcade’s co-owner Paul Kermizian. “I wanted to go back
to Brooklyn.†-

I was out on Friday, coming home after a show, and stopped at Cherry Tree (crowded, had to stand) and 4th Ave Pub (crowded, but found a table), and the thing I am curious about is which bars, in the collective view, have managed to avoid the stigma of being a destination for field trips from Manhattan? Know what I mean? Which Slope bars are still mostly Slope bars?
I am wondering if it's the newer bars, with their exposed brick and track lighting, that get this label, or if it's certain ones among the newer bars. ...I was standing at the back of Cherry Tree, watching A-Rod strike out, and was thinking to myself, in view of some of the "discussion" above, Are my fellow drinkers outsider-hipsters slumming in Brooklyn? Or are they my neighbors, more or less?
I'm not sayin' it matters; I'm just curious. Thoughts? -

I agree. I haven't been yet, but now I gotta give it a shot at least.
next time my on the block living friends suggest it, i won't recoil. -
I now say curse. Who wants to wait in line for ten minutes in frigid wind while the bouncer excessively inspects I.D.s of 30 somethings who look like 40 somethings only to squeeze into a space more crowded and with less seating than the Q train during rush hour to purchase a $9 drink that costs $5 around the corner at Patio?
-
Really? Last time I want to Patio (last Summer) the drinks were stupidly expensive and I swore never to return.
-
FREDDY'S!! Go to Freddy's!! I have always loved this bar. I started this post, cuz as an OG, I was curious how youse guys feel about a new bar/club. Obviously, alot of you are new brooklynites--keeping careful tabs on race quotas--but c'mon Brooklyn!! I am the girl drinking too much and laughing too loud with the other old timers. Be they black, white whatever, a good bar just----smell good. Union Hall is great (in theory) but smells too much like overpriced Area (?) onesies. Freddy's rocks in every distorted reality you have ever imagined. And it smells awful.
-
I actually prefer both Union Hall and Patio to Freddy's. Then again, I like "overpriced yuppified bars", as many call them. :P To each her own eh? This is kind of off topic but does anyone know what kind of final product Brownstone Billiards is going to have after their renovations? It would be great to finally have a place to play air hockey and pool. It looks like a sports bar.

opera nights? knitting?!! bluegrass? spelling bees? standup comedy? live music? poetry and readings from teenage diaries?! a singing ham contest? people over 40?!!
what manner of beast be this freddy's?
oh dark slopers, heed my warning, you must lock your doors flee from this abberation! this might lead one to smoking!
