safety at the Franklin Ave. stop on the C
I'm considering moving into a lovely apartment about two blocks from the Franklin Avenue stop on the C . During an afternoon visit to the place I noticed that the street and sidewalks are dirty, but the area didn't strike me as dangerous. My potential housemates tell me they have had no problems, but said they would discourage me from coming home late at night by myself. That sounds like reasonable advice, but I am worried that I will end up feeling housebound at night (or unable to get home when I'm out late.)
Of course, I will visit at night before making a committment, but I would be grateful to hear what other people think about the safety of the immediate area. How friendly is the neighborhood? How cautious does a person need to be? Is there anything else a newcomer should know about?

That's our stop too. We've been living in the neighborhood since 1999. We've never had a problem. Our neighbors are wonderful, there are good restaurants nearby, and the library is ok for fiction and maybe light history. A big plus is you can take the B25 or 26 and be at BAM in 10 minutes.
That corner is always busy, I wouldn't worry too much about coming home at night, but in NY you always have to be careful. You might want to think about a car service if you're traveling really late, like after 2am. But generally that neighborhood is safer than Brooklyn Heights (believe it or not). Enjoy yourself here, I think you'll like it. -
I've lived 2 blocks from the Franklin Ave. stop since 2002, and your initial perceptions are correct...the street & sidewalks being dirty are the biggest problems. I have heard of a few isolated petty-criminal incidents (e.g., breaking into cars) in the past 4-5 years, but that too is getting rare. Every year since I moved in, I've watched the neighborhood improve dramatically...although we're still lagging in certain services in the immediate neighborhood. One of the biggest problems was that the same group of teenage boys (more annoying than dangerous...we call them the "Fat Albert Gang") would loiter in front of 499 Franklin Avenue (across from library and les than 50 ft. from elementary school) almost 24 hours of the day....but b/c of renovations, they've moved to loitering the store around the corner on Fulton btwn Franklin & Claver. People really leave you alone for the most part here (unless you're running around @ night darting eyes & looking petrified, in which case you are "food" in most places in NYC) and the neighbors are great for the most part. It's also refreshing to see a post about this section of Bedford-Stuyvesant!

In all fairness, though, I thought I should post this thread from another post on this forum:

mmmmm...I've gone to the popeyes on that corner very late at night more times than I should for my personal health. I vote in the opinion of safe.

I lived at that stop for two years (on Spencer, between beford and franklin.) It's not a horribly unsafe 'hood. I have a dog and walked him sometimes as late as 10pm and we were fine.
The only 'issue' I had was with the above mentioned gang of boys that hung out infront of the brownstone on Franklin near the subway station. Even at 8:30am they would be out there. They always said good morning to me but let's be honest, any group of young people (black, white, brown, whateva) can be a little nerve racking. I moved to Boreum Hill in September so I don't know what's become of them.
Nonetheless, I would recommend the area. -
I agree... I kind of think its as safe as you make it... just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine
