HIT AND RUN! — Brooklynian

HIT AND RUN!

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
There was a hit n run at the corner of Washington and St. Johns place this morning around 8:35am. The victim was a 20'ish white man who seemed to be on his way to work. He was wearing business-type attire and carrying a messenger bag. He was injured, but conscious and thankfully, not killed. The ambulance showed up promptly and took him away. As far as I know, the driver of the vehicle got away.

Comments

  • Did you actually see it happen? What kind of vehicle?
  • No, I didn't see it happen. I got there as the ambulance were helping the guy. I don't have anymore info.
  • Sucks - people drive like effin' maniacs in this area. You'd think that they'd slow down a little on the more residential blocks, but I guess not. Even people driving work vehicles couldn't care less - I confronted someone with the parks dept after she blew through an intersection while I was in the crosswalk (she hit a red light, 20 yards away) - "I didn't see you," was her excuse. Yeah, kinda hard to see someone when you're going 45 down a narrow residential street with cars parked on both sides of the street, bitch. I was gonna report her ass, but I forgot to the vehicle number before I had a chance to call.

I wonder how that speed bump worked out on Sterling, approaching Vandy? Is it still there? Did it help? If so, can I have one on my block?
  • Man, people used to just fly over that speed bump. I think it's gone now, right?
  • 10 - 1 it was an SUV.
  • my father got hit once, guy got out of van, saw my dad just got knock to the ground, and drove away quickly.
  • watch out for those access-a-van's - that's what they are called, right, arm_chair?!
  • yeah those bastards will run you over! lol btw i quit :p haha check out my thread on lounge.

me i only run over pretty white girls on bikes :p.
  • Someone just got hit by a car in ParkSlope, look at the PS board.

there's a thread on this somewhere. the one on sterling was not technically removed, but lowered to the point of meaninglessness. i wrote the city requesting that it be reinstated and another one erected on park (and posted the address in case anyone else wanted to do likewise). months later i got a form letter back essentially blowing me off. (if i find it, i'll be more specific, but i think i tossed it.)

someone here raised an objection to speed bumps' shaking the foundations of nearby houses. i don't know if that's a valid concern or not.

if there are better solutions, i'd be happy to hear them.
  • Subject: yep. that was me.

    um. yeah. that was me.

i was on my way to the 2/3 yesterday morning and as i was crossing st. john's at washington - with a walk signal - mr. jackass turned left onto st. john's and more or less side-swiped me. we looked right at each other and then my forehead smacked into the side of his car. he drove off shortly after blood started squirting out of my head and i fell to the ground. a witness told me that the guy was talking on his cellphone.

17 stitches in my head / bruised ribs / imprint of my keys in my left thigh.

    f*cking a**hole.
  • Cripes, raginglethargy. I'm glad you weren't hurt worse, but that's awful!

Did anyone manage to get a good description of the jerk?
  • wow glad you weren't hurt worse.
  • That's my corner! I can't believe that hasn't happened more often, especially with guys turning left off of Washington onto St. Johns. It's a really wide, wide street, so I think they take it pretty fast when they make those turns. It's like a speed racer episode out there sometimes.
  • That's awful. And the guy just drove off???

I hope you feel better soon.
  • that is horrible, i am glad you are alive/generally okay but damn. that really sucks.
  • thank you, rangingle hargy. nice report! you're on the blog: http://www.dailyheights.com/
  • There's a huge speed bump on St. Marks b/w Grand and Classon... doesn't really help for the rest of the neighborhood though.

Rumble strips are a much more effective speed deterrent
  • not for nothing, but the user name of our brave victim was Raging Lethargy (get it)....not the very ethnic name rangingle hargy that you tagged him with...but thanks for making me laugh after reading such a sh*tty story

i've never used more cautioun in my life then when i cross any street in the ph/ch area...you never know when someone will blow a light, make a crazy u-turn, etc.

my rule of thumb is as follows:

always let the following cars pass before crossing:

    1. Car Service (A Given)
    2. Access-A-Ride (Already mentioned and they're always looking for more customers to add to their list)
    3. Any Large SUV (Always a disaster)
    4. MTA Buses
    5. Any Vehicle that some what resembles the Van fro the A-Team

Glad to hear you're okay though, that's real scary

Wasn't there an S.E. Hinton novel about those? :P
