Stray kitty - Prospect Place between Carlton and Vand.
I just saw a kitty eating through a garbage bag on Prospect Place betw. Carlton and Vanderbilt, close to Vanderbilt. He's patchy in color - brown, black, white - and kinda small. If anyone is missing their kitty . . . He looked like he was in pretty good shape. I didn't want to take him in, in case he actually belongs to someone and just walked out for a bit.

Chances are, unless he has a collar, he/she's a stray. Take 'em in if you see him/her again and he/she will actually come to you.
"They" say that if they come to you, they are used to people and therefore, totally adoptable- just pick 'em up and go! If this is the case, chances are they were dumped. This happens a lot, as well all know.
If he/she doesn't come to you, they're feral, and are probably connected to a cat colony in the nabe.
Save the kitties!!!! -
I agree with Whatchuwant about picking up the kitty. You can also work with the feral cats (especially the babies) to socialize them as I've done it myself. Usually calico cats (that's what the coloring sounds like) are female, for some reason.
There's probably an animal league somewhere in your neighborhood that can help you find a home or they may take it into a foster home to be adopted. Call the ASPCA or a nearby Vet to ask how to network the info you need to save this kitten.
That's great that you care. =D> -
FYI- ASPCA is the way to go if you cannot keep kitty. KEEP IN MIND though, they test the animal for contagious diseases and if they come back positive, they kick you and the animal out the door. (This happened to me once, they were nice, they just don't take the sickies as they are super difficult to get adopted).
A great deal of strays are positive- so this MAY happen. BUT!!!!! and this is a big BUT, in the experience I mentioned, one year later the cat actually either BECAME negative (this happens!) OR was originally misdiagnosed by ASPCA.
Happy ending story: gave her to my roommate who moved out last year. They are completely in love!!!!! -
That is so wonderful you helped that cat and found it a home. Good things will come your way.
I was actually mentioning calling the ASPCA to see if there are any animal leagues that could help find a home if the person couldn't keep it. I would have a challenge sending an animal to a shelter cause they only give them 7 days to be adopted and then they have to put them down. Some keep them longer, but you couldn't be sure they'd call you if you asked them to let you know if it hit its limit in time allowed so you could try to find it a home.
Shelters are tough places for an animal. Pretty scary.
I'll bet someone could help this good samaritan. -
If you look on the Pets forum quite a few people have taken in strays and found them homes. There is also a great feral cat organization called Park Slope Cats who might be able to spread the word for you also. Good luck

Thanks for the props, Dakota. It's my way of making up for the bad things I've done.......

My Grandma used to say "When I'm good, I'm great. But when I'm bad, I'm even better." Believe that was a Mae West quote, but it always shocked me when she said it!!!
And you can't be that bad if you take care of the animals, no matter what you've done in the past.

fwiw, I believe there's a genetic anomaly/variable in calico cats that guarantees that they are always female. so, if you see a calico, it's a she. gosh, I miss my calico baby.

slope street cats was an amazing organization that helped pair me with a lovely cat. brooklyn foster network helped me find a companion for her and now i have two former local strays as absolute love bugs.
note the photo:
there may also be a stray behind a house on park place b/w washington + underhill on the north side of the street. i totally saw the cat jump a fence. don't know anything else about him/her, though. -
i work in bburg, land of stray cats. one has been playing with me through a fence, and i am in love with her/him. but my kitty hates other animals and people, so not a chance. sigh.

You don't think your cat could adjust to another cat? Sometime they can surprise you. If you can't take that kitty, maybe you could hook it up with the Brooklyn Foster network. Sometime these groups will lend out a have a heart trap that's real easy to use and only closes the trap door behind the cat when it goes in to eat whatever you've put in there to catch it. It can't injure them at all.
And Brooklynleather-love your kittys too. Amazing how when an animal has been a stray or lost or in a shelter, how they cherise your love and that you took them in forever. They know what hard times are.
I've always loved and trusted the animals so much more than people. If a horse, dog, cat, whatever doesn't like you they'll bite or kick you. Theres no hidden agenda or smile on their face to get something from you. Just total honesty.
Gotta love the animals -
So the cat I mentioned at the beginning of this post came back today -- in our building's laundry room -- with five kittens! A neighbor had called the ASPCA and they told her she had to put them in a box with a lid on (with holes) before they would come and get them, which she did. However, the ASPCA didn't come all day and I got worried about them staying in there all night because I thought maybe some of the kids in our building would mess with them. Voila, I now have a calico mama and five teensy kittens in my bathroom! Mama is eating and drinking and nursing. I called the ASPCA again and they're going to come tomorrow.
Kittens! So cute! -
Bless you, Sushipants!

Pictures....take some pictures!

God, no pictures! I'll fall in love and my house is PACKED to the gills with boys- both human and furry versions...

oh, i've tried. and failed. i gave it four months. said cat ended up moving into the closet and losing 2 pounds. the moment i gave away the other cat she came out happy as a clam. but that's not an experiment i'd like to go through again. -
Just make sure that it's the ASPCA that you called to pick up that cats and not Animal Control.
-
Bless you all for stepping in to help an animal in need. I can understand when animals just don't like to be with others. Believe me. Some just don't want to play well with others.
If I may just suggest that they promise to call you if they decide they can't keep the cats any longer, there may be other alternatives. Like the animal leagues that may find them foster homes. They have no kill policies and you can rest assured they would have safe and loving homes until they got one of their own.
Good luck =D> -

The ASPCA directed us to call Animal Control, which is who came to get them. Surely the ASPCA wouldn't suggest someone cruel come get them, would they? I'm pretty sure my husband confirmed with the pick-up guy this morning that they'd be taken to a no-kill shelter. -
Animal Control does euthanize, about 50% of its intake. So this sounds a little fishy--can you call and confirm with ASPCA?
-
I just emailed them to ask them to let me know if it ever came to that, and to give me an opportunity to find them a home if they could no longer keep them.
Where should I have sent them instead? -
Because places like animal control are ususally understaffed, I wouldn't at all depend on them to call you instead of putting the cat to sleep. There is another post about cats on this forum that may guide you. Where did I hear about Park Slope Cat League? Call your vet (or any vet) and ask of organizations that will foster the cat, but I wouldn't leave it in with this group and think it will be adopted. Unfortunately, the cute little kittens get homes and the older cats can only hope someone just wants a friend to love. Not to sound pushy, but I'd call right away.
There was always the North Shore Animal League, but I have no idea where there are located.
Please don't leave it with this group if at all possible.
