I just moved to Bed-Stuy... — Brooklynian

I just moved to Bed-Stuy...

Due to the rising costs of the East Village, I packed my stuff and headed over the river to Bed Stuy. $1000 less than my last place and twice the size...great!

But...
Fresh Direct doesn't deliver
I can't find a restaurant to save my life (I am waiting for Key-Span to turn my stove on)
Fruit in my hood is scary looking.

I guess I don't know where anything is...

Is there a site dedicated to this area.

I am by the Utica Ave stop.

  • I just moved as well. on friday -- i went to this grocery on the corner of kingston and fulton - korean grocery..and bought some salsa..i went home and looked under the red price ticket to learn that it expired in Aug 06. From then on - I will only go to Foodtown up the street..which i find to be a 'ok 'market.. (compared to Pathmark on atlantic - i despise that place for produce). I usually buy produce out of brooklyn..but after going to foodtown..i think i will try it out..

Also - maybe truck to prospect park on saturdays if u want good produce..i didn't check it out..but i heard its ok. maybe others can provide insight..
  • Thank you so much. Where is foodtown?
  • Foodtown is Fulton and Brooklyn. Many of the north/south streets change names at Fulton, so Thompkins is on the north side and ends Fulton and Brooklyn is on the south side and starts at Fulton. Fron Utica and Fulton if you walk west it's about 4 blocks. It's in a block long mall that also contains a Citibank, Chase, Washington Mutual (?), Baskin Robbins, and Applebees. There used to be a post office there and a place to pay utility bills, but I'm not sure if they are still there.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!
Super Foodtown is at 1420 Fulton in Restoration Plaza (Fulton and Brooklyn Avenue). There is also a Duane Reade, an Applebees, a few smaller shops (including a nice but not cheap homewares shop)... I think it's a bit of a jog from Utica (it's between the Nostrand stop on the A/C train and the Kingston-Throop stop on the C). Here is a recent thread about Foodtown http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33332&highlight=foodtown which includes their website (http://www.foodtown.com). I like them and their produce is okay; I can usually find produce at the little markets that line Fulton.
There are a few links that I posted in this thread http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=32981&highlight= which might lead you to some restaurants. I think that Bread Stuy is closer to you than it is to me, and I have heard good things about that place.
Here is a list of restaurants http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5391&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=bread+stuy (I haven’t tried most of them – I don’t eat out much though I like roti from whatever place still has vegetables, since they usually run out of the vegetables or the wrap, and I love King’s Pizza, and get it delivered at least once a week, but they’re near me and I don’t know if they’d deliver near you) and delivery places http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5877&highlight=bread+stuy . If I was you I would walk around to find places. What do you think?
  • The Post Office is still there, but I don't know what their hours are (they're never open when I pass through). I forgot about the Baskin Robbins!
P.S. Check out Pissed Off Walker's post in this thread
http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33628 . They say there will be no A/C service on the weekends between Jay and Utica for more than a month. Shuttle buses instead. Aaargh!

I think you've just explained why the rent was $1000/mo. cheaper for a larger space. The trick is to help the area in its improving without the rents getting to the level of the East Village's. You'll find most of the info you inquired about on this forum (use the "search" function to look up key terms). The area of Bedford Stuyvesant you live in is sometiomes referred to as "Stuyvesant Heights" and includes the landmarked secion of BS. Welcome and good luck!
  • Oh, almost forgot that there is a farmer's market during the warm months in the schoolyard at Decatur and Lewis. It should be starting up again soon.
  • question: to piggyback off her question. i recently moved..

i live on macon btwn tompkins and lewis..
what delivers.. like good places to eat.. i find that its so hard getting delivery or knowing what delivers..

i know brooks cafe - but i dont want to spend $25 every time i want to get something to eat..

preferably good thai, good chinese, good anything.. not a vegan ,but not into red meat..

also - i know Les (soul food place) is further down on tompkins near monroe/ jefferson /gates area.. - - but is it really good.. i know Village Voice or chowhound voted this spot best something

  • You are almost around the corner from me and so far I can't even find a dominos that delivers. Then again, I don't have the internet hooked up in my new apartment. And I never really think about it when I am in the office.
  • um, Dominos? why would anybody want that? that said, there apparently is one on fulton at tompkins:

    1479 Fulton St
    Brooklyn, NY 11216
    (718) 221-4800

but i shed a little tear as i post this ;)
  • No! I hate Dominos! I was looking for a pizza delivery place and it took forever. I almost gave in to Dominos- Ha. I ate at crown chicken-I will always eat at crown chicken before I eat Dominos.

Uncle Vinnie's (sp?) pizza, on Halsey off Throop, is more than decent. Shakoor's Sweet Tooth also serves dinner, I think, though I'm not sure if they deliver.

Check out my site. It might give you some ideas. www.BedStuyRealEstateGuy.com. I've included a restaurant section to make identifying the "must eat" places and the eateries that people are talking about there on the site. I also have an events segment which highlights some of the going-ons in the community. That section continues to evolve as I expand my e-mail list for those hosting events. Aside from the restaurants, what are you looking for. You mentioned the E. Village, into art? The A-Space gallery, on the other side of "The Stuy" is hosting an exhibition there next month that is free to the public. It will be included on my April Calendar of Events, but in the mean-time, you can either do a google search for the gallery or follow the link there on the bottom of the events page. Lastly, go to the Food Town web-site and look for the bed-stuy location. The hell with Fresh Direct, our Food Town delivers too. Gee, I guess my site has a link for that too (restaurant page)...lol. On a serious note, for you and other readers, I do want it to be a community resource, so if there are things going on in the hood, please do drop me a line and tell me about it.

    PS- Welcome to the hood.
