Body Reserve on Union and 5th. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean, the people are nice and it's never too crowded. Relatively cheap too.
-
The YMCA on 9th betw. 5th and 6th is pretty good. I have a citywide membership for $88 a month and use the chelsea gym during the week. There is a NY Sports Club on 5th Ave and 9th. Check them all out before you buy!

Oh, then Crunch on Flatbush and 7th is out.
If are a 9-to-5er that commutes on the Q train, Crunch would work if you carry a gym bag to work.
If you don't care about fancy towels, Body Reserve at 207 5th Avenue near Union Street is a cheap, no-nonsense alternative to pricey gyms offering special spa services.
If you need a pool, your options are reduced. The YMCA 357 9th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues and Eastern Athletic Club
(website: http://easternathleticclubs.com) might be worth exploring. -
Yeah I'd also recommend the Body Reserve on 5th. They've got the most reasonable prices in the area, and it's a completely relaxed kind of place with friendly people. Though as someone else said, it's nothing fancy and they do have the most motley assortment of towels I've ever seen...

NY Sports Clubs has some excellent classes but it might be a bit of s schlep for you.

I do NYSC. It's on 9th street and 5th. They JUST got new stuff (not that the old stuff was old) new monitors on the machines, more bikes. I just noticed it last night. I also noticed they cut my gym lock (I pay for a locker) which PISSED me off since I paid for it 1 month ago, and bought it for a full year. They appologized for the mix up, gave me a new (better) lock and had all my shit (including a few bucks I keep in the lokcer) in a bag in their storage room. So all in all it was ok, but I was fuming at first. I have some expensive running shit that I keep there. I thought it was gone. Oh well, it all worked out and only cost me 10 minutes of my time.
Anyway, aside from that I've never had any problems there. I have a membership that lets me go to any of them, any time. I pay 69/month. I think it is more now, but you can (in theory) sign up at one way out in queens and never actually go to that one, but pay less per month, or so I'm told. I got in on a charter membership when a new club opened on Varric, joined before the place opened. Ok enough of this ramble, try a few gyms but see what's close to you so you acually go. -
NYSC has the most locations of any gym in the city (to the best of my knowledge). They're pretty bare bones but it's a good deal for what you get.
-
some are better than others, like the one is PS has a steam room and a sauna, some only have as sauna. things like that. I was at one in NJ over the weekend and they had no towel service. WTF!
-
I do NYSC at 9th & 5th and noticed all the new equipment as well. I must say, I have been super impressed with this gym. I think it's worth the monthly fee. It's very clean and the staff is pretty friendly. Kind of wish they had a better variety of classes though...

I love the Y on 9th, just up the street from NYSC (on the other side of the street). If you belong to the Food Co-op or have kids that go to 321 or 51, you get a discount - I pay $40-something a month for a family membership. They have all new machines, great classes - Traci or Lori's Pilates classes are awesome. I go there every day (I work at home and am otherwise sedentary).
-
I go to the Y, but I've been thinking I need to try the NYSC.
The Y is ok at certain times, but often it's just too packed, plus there are little things that annoy me about the place. For example, the punching bag in the weight room, seriously annoying. -
Maybe it's annoying so you'll punch it harder?

Yes, because I work at home I can scoot over there when it's not so crowded, but after about 6:30 there's a line for some of the machines...and people do get a little bit testy.... -
Here's the thing... I am so muscular I'm having a hard time typing this right now. How did I get to be so buff??? YMCA baby.
They've got my vote... even though they are currently harrassing me about having lost my ID.
Also, and most importantly the Y sponsor after school programs, swimming/life guard classes, kids and adult basketball, cheap housing for poor people..... The Y's profits go into the community... the NYCSC profits go into somebodies pocket. Your choice.
Also, Body Reserve is pretty good. -
For your location, I agree with the others. The Y is your best bet for convenience of location.
Both Body Reserve and The Slope Fitness are a little out of your way. Body Reserve is more basic, while Slope Fitness is more upscale.Depends what sort of atmosphere you prefer.
To satisfy everyone, I am not associated with the Y, have no financial interest in the running of the Y or have any financial interest in any properties around the Y. -

This board has been so relentlessly stalked in the past by Slope Fitness people that I have to refer to it now that you're posting again. Your family owns the building, right?
It would be better for you to be upfront with your financial stake in Slope Fitness. One of the many previous instances here
Also, if you want to discuss shilling, please take it over to that thread.
Friday am UPDATE:nkotsonis, I moved your latest defense over to that thread, where it belongs. Please don't gum up the works here with off-topic discussion.
I was really happy to see it not start on this thread, until now.
You're free to recommend the place, just be upfront that you have a stake in it please.
We'll all respect you more for that. -
Last night I was at the NYSC and after running 9 miles (in 1 hour flat, thanks!) I needed a good stretch, mats were all taken so I went to the room that they sometimes have classes/sometimes babysit, since it is covered in mats. It was empty, save for one employee. I went in, she said "Yes?" and I said "Huh?" and she said "you can't be in here for another half an hour, babysitting" and I looked around, no babies and ponted that out, to which she said they might come in at some point (this was around 8:30/9pm). I said "We'll how about the moment a baby comes in, I'll split, no problem" she said "NO, it's the rules." Anyway, that's one negative for NYSC on my list. Seriously, I hate that kinda shit. It's a gym with a baby sitting spot, not a baby sitting spot with some exercise machines. F-them.

Anyone know if you can pay monthly at the Y and use their pool? I have a triathlon coming up and I REALLY need to work on my swimming. NYSC does not have a pool (to my knowledge) anywhere convienent. Also, any other pools around that people know of? I know John J has adult swim lessons 1 night a week for an hour, in one lane, but that won't work. I don't need lessons, just laps.
-
Eastern Athletic has a pool that might serve your purpose.
Also there is a synagogue on Garfield or 1st Street on 8th Avenue, and I think they have a pool as well.
I have no financial interest in Eastern Athletic, or any properties around Eastern Athletic, and I am a gentile. Therefore I have no interest in recommending the synagogue. -

As someone who triathlon trains in that very pool, I wouldn't recommend it. Try the new Dodge Y pool on Atlantic. Its bigger. The problem with the pool is it is too small, it has few adult/teen lap swims so those times are way overloaded and they have to enforce the 30 min limit. PLUS, its only a 20 yard pool, so you are constantly pushing off the wall which really messes up your sense of speed and strength. I hate that pool, honestly. When the new one opens (probably 2-3 years) it will be more manageable, but for now the pool is a bit of a disaster. -
You want one of the newer/renovated YMCA's. The one on 14th st in Manhattan is pretty good.

I'd have to agree with Jayce that the Prospect Park Y is less than ideal for swimming laps. It's only 20 yards and 3 lanes, very warm, and from what i've seen, "lap swim" is often slow breast strokers and kickboarders, which doesn't lend itself to training.
You may want to try Berkeley Carroll over on President St. You can buy a "swim fit" card that entitles you to 20 visits for $200. Hours are somewhat limited, but it's a 4 lane, 25 yard pool.
The City pools are also a good option. The Chelsea pool is only $75/year, so it's worth it even if you only use it for a couple of months. Plus in the spring, there are great outdoor pools at the Red Hook and Sunset Park recreation centers.
(BTW, in the interest of not being perceived as a Slope Fitness-like shill, i should point out that i am on staff at the BC pool and have also used the Y for triathlon classes.) -
joncane, I'm glad you mentioned that you work at the BC pool actually...
I noticed that Jack Rabbit hosts a swimming training there, and it looks really great. I was interested in the Swim Level 1. I know HOW to swim (meaning I won't drown) but I'm not a "swimmer" - I probably can't do more than a lap or 2 at once right now. But I'd love to be better!
Have you had any experience with this program? I'm wondering if people enjoy it, if the coach is any good, if it would be appropraite for someone of my level, etc? Any input you had would be great! -
I took that class. Its awesome. Coach John Stewart is a lot of fun and he is really good as a coach. I recommend that class highly. i took Swim 1 and Swim 2 and maybe signing up for 3 sometime soon. And yes, it will be appropriate for your level but you should expect he will work you hard.

Are these pools for formal swimming or could one just enjoy the water without dodging people doing their laps? -
Thanks Jayce! I've nothing against working hard... I'm really looking for a good workout. But I didn't want to hold others back, or be way out of my league, either. Sounds great though.

In Swim 1 you won't hold anyone back. There is a wide range of people in there and John will have you swimming faster in no time. You'll be fine exactly where you are. -

Yes - i coach the triathlon programs for Jack Rabbit, and many of my athletes join the swim programs. THey are coached by John Stewart, who has worked with me on several programs. He's a great guy and very patient and informative. I recommend his swim classes highly.
