Gym Recommendation ?

My kids go to the synagogue's pool for their afterschool program. It's Temple Beth Elohim, on Garfield and 8th (hence the moniker "Garfield Temple"). The building with the pool is actually across Garfield Street from the temple - the synagogue has a chapel there, a large rec room, office space, a basketball court, the pool, a kitchen, classroom space, and a ballroom (which the afterschool program uses for gymnastics).
I am not Jewish either. I'm just sayin'. -
wow, how do I find more info on the Synagogue's pool?
-
Oh, I love that synagogue! I think it's one of the prettiest buildings in Brooklyn.
-
KosherDave, you can call them - (718) 768-3814.

I needed a good stretch, mats were all taken so I went to the room that they sometimes have classes/sometimes babysit, since it is covered in mats. It was empty, save for one employee. I went in, she said "Yes?" and I said "Huh?" and she said "you can't be in here for another half an hour, babysitting" and I looked around, no babies and ponted that out, to which she said they might come in at some point (this was around 8:30/9pm). I said "We'll how about the moment a baby comes in, I'll split, no problem" she said "NO, it's the rules." Anyway, that's one negative for NYSC on my list. Seriously, I hate that kinda shit. It's a gym with a baby sitting spot, not a baby sitting spot with some exercise machines. F-them.
NYSC has a pool in their 49th Street location, albeit not a terribly huge one.

I have heard horror stories about public pools (dirty bandaids and misplaced depends undergarments) that have kept me far, FAR away.
One thing I will give Crunch is they have much better classes than NYSC and the staff isn't quite so anal and rules-oriented. -

At the city pools there are lap lanes as well as space for recreational types.
Are these pools for formal swimming or could one just enjoy the water without dodging people doing their laps?
The city pools are mostly kids playing -- there's little ones too, like at 3rd Ave and DeGraw. Red Hook is 100m x 50m - huge. It's so big they rope off half the pool most of the time unless there's a big big crowd. Opening day is MAYHEM.
Most of them have lap hours, if not a dedicated lap lane.
I don't think there's any indoor ones close to here, so you'll have to wait until July. The other rule they have is Bring A Lock. You have to show it to get in the door. -

I watch out for broken glass in the pool at DeGraw, cause it's a big night time hang. There's no more band-aids there than at the Y or Eastern Athletic.
ljnd you have my new favorite avatar -
Also, about NYSC, has anyone noticed that a lot of the trainers (though not all, but a lot) are NOT anyone you'd expect might be able to whip you into shape, let alone themselves? What's up with that? I'm in favor non-discriminitive hiring, but seriously, I could be WAY off here, but it seems that someone who is WAY overweight would not be an ideal trainer. If I came to a new gym and needed a trainer, I would not take too seriously to someone who needed one more than I did.

I don't belong to that gym, so I don't know what their trainers look like.
I wouldn't have an issue with a trainer being big/overweight as long as they had a decent amount of muscle tone and I was comfortable with their experience/education.
I was really annoyed once when I went to a SERIOUSLY hard yoga class (at Jivamukti) and the instrcutor did not do any of the moves herself and looked like I could push her over with my pinky. She had no muscle tone whatsoever. I found myself thinking some very non-peaceful thoughts during class! -

I've...uh...noticed that too. I've had several classes where the instructors didn't participate, or when they did participate were having a hard time keeping up. I'm not taking about different body types and whatnot (that's cool, no problems there). I'm talking clinically obese, smoker in hell gasp. I don't know if their classes/training are just a side gig or what... -

I should add they the people in question do not appear to have ANY muschle tone, but I can not speak to their experience/edu. But in a realted note, I would not want someone with a finance MBA who's completely broke from poor personal money managment, telling me how to invest mine... nor would I really think someone so completely out of shape, despite their knowledge, could convince me that they knew what they were talking about in a gym setting...

Agreed....but there are some large(r) people who are still in shape, have muscle and are qualified to train. I don't have an issue with that.....oftentimes they've already made vast improvements to their own health/well-being and are still very FIT, just large.
They should certainly be able to handle whatever they want me to do by being able to do it themselves. -
Does anyone know what the slope fitness monthly rates are? Are they inline with NYSC?

I am sure if you wait someone from Slope Fitness will chime in, but as I recall, they are pretty comperable to NYSC, maybe even a little less that the NYSC passport membership, the drawback is you don't get multiple gyms, but it does seem that Slope Fitness has new equiptment. Maybe if you mentioned you're on this board they'll waive the sign-up fee! -
kosherdave wrote: Maybe if you mentioned you're on this board they'll waive the sign-up fee!
Yes good idea! Anyone for slope fitness want to wave my fee?
-
I thought Slope Fitness endorsing was banned from this board?
-
I think the issue was that one of the owners of slope fitness was shilling for it.
-
fyi...the owner of slope fitness also happens to be the same person who just kicked out the dance studio in the same building....the one that had been there for 30 years despite the vacancy downstairs in the same building that is still sitting with a sign for rent.
it is also the same person that said brown harris stevens was responsible for cleaning the snow out front taking any blame away from he, who owns the building. while it may be the job of the commercial renter, it is interesting that the owner would come on here and place blame for snow removal on one of his tenants.
this guy is BAD for the neighborhood.
i'm personally starting my own campaign against this guy and got two of my friends to quit their membership at slope fitness (even though i do think it's a nice gym) and they will be joining me at nysc.
the only way to rid ourselves of these shady landlords is to get people to not frequent their establishments. i've also got a mind to talk to my friend who works at brown harris stevens and see about relocating to another space.
that will leave him with nearly a totally empty building with the dance studio STILL trying to find a suitable place big enough for them in the neighborhood where they'd like to stay. -
Well, just to clarify -- from what he's said, I believe he owns the BUILDING where slope fitness is. He doesn't own the business itself. So I'm not sure how getting people to quit Slope fitness is useful... You're essentially punishing a business for who their landlord is, I think.
That said, I've been following your argument with him pretty closely, Belzjm, and I agree with you. I think all he cares about is the money, and he feigns not understanding why you and others are so upset about the dance studio. He knows exactly why; he just doesn't care. From what he's written on this board, I don't get the impression that he cares about the neighborhood in the slightest.
Truth be told, I don't care much either way about Slope fitness (I go to Body Reserve!) But it does seem pretty unfair to me that they should be punished and lose clientele for having a crap landlord. -
i agree with you quigley. slope fitness should not have to suffer, but seeing as i have no vested interest in the place and belong to another gym it just kills two birds with one stone to have my friends join me at nysc. i wish slope fitness no ill will and of course would not want their business to suffer from having such a bad landlord, but perhaps at some point they will wise up and find another space...or i'm guessing it's only a matter of time before said landlord raises their rent enough that they will no longer be able to stay.
i'm pissed, in case you can't tell so i apologize if i sound like i'm flying off the handle.
i'm not really, but this guy is getting to me bigtime. it sounds like a small battle, but really what is going on with him is going on in every neighborhood in new york.
if he had it his way, he'd fill that entire building with a branch of each bank or worse yet...do what he's doing now and not renew leases out of greed when spaces are already currently for rent in there.
the north slope section of 7th avenue used to be such an amazing place to walk and instead of watching stores close up shop, have vacant places sit for rent for months on end all whilst knowing that there is a list of 100 people waiting for space has just got me to the point that i'd like to start doing something about it if at all possible. -

From what he's said . . . but he's shilled for the gym pretty relentlessly, creating multiple "characters" on this board who posted in every possible thread about their great love for Slope Health and Fitness.
I agree with belzjm, I hate to see the Slope becoming so sterile, with unique businesses being replaced by ever more bank branches and cell phone stores. And it is people like Kotsonis who are longtime owners in Park Slope and are happy to decry the "yuppie scum newcomers" yet happily force out the old businesses that added interest and value to the community. -

There is a NYSC on Boerum Place off of Pacific St. which is about 4 1/2 blocks from you and if you work out late you can hop on the 65 bus which will leave you on Dean and 4th. Good luck on your new move -

Rose, if you had read the post in grammar nazis properly, you will see that I call myself those names. I said this to show that I can make fun of myself, and not take things so seriously.
Please do not take things out of context. -
This is the original post (which he subsequently edited in the thread):

Now you can decide for yourselves what you think he meant. Personally, I don't think he was making fun of himself (although the stuff he tacked on afterward does seem like an attempt to make it seem that way).
Is that what I'll be called from now on?
Well, I guess , I could be called worse, like Liberal, Communist, Yuppie Scum, Park Slope Scum, that's popular in Bensonhurst. Not so bad considering. -
carnivore,
Still upset that I defeated your gerund reference?

for someone so "successful" you sure could stand to get a life. Don't you have an empty space to go sweep or something? Or a sidewalk to shovel? Cripes, this is getting boring.

You, Mr. Kotsonis should be prepared for me to start taking action against you, your building and it's tenants. I'm sorry that they will have to suffer because you are such a sorry excuse for a businessman. I don't really think you know or have any familiarity with the power of the people in Park Slope when they are able to band together and voice their concerns, but I think in the not too distant future you should look forward to hearing more from me and from others. I will be visiting the tenants of your building in the coming week, and plan to start discussing opportunities for them to move to alternate spaces. From one that I've already spoken to, they already have plans to do so as soon as they are able.
I suggest you work today on trying to secure leases for the remainder of the building and those that you have chosen not to renew instead of spending time on here making completely assinine remarks. I will be contacting the people I know later today to work with them to find out why they were unable to rent your space below the dance studio even though they were fully able and willing to pay the asking rent.
I'm quite confident your days as a slum landlord in Park Slope are numbered. -
Carnivore, this is off-topic but... your avatar is terrifying! But also fantastic! That Burger King guy already scares the crap out of me, but now...eek! Where did you get that??

+1, totally awesome avatar. I want it! -

Actually, I'm not upset at all. I just want everyone to have all the facts, including what you originally said before you edited it after I told you I was going to be quoting your post often (i.e. every time you shill for your gym on the boards). What I quoted above is the entirety of your original post, and if you claim otherwise you are flat-out lying.

If anyone wants to see the full thread, it is here.
Apparently, nkotsonis is a little confused about what "defeated" means also.
