    Body Reserve is great.
Love it. Been a member for three years. Open 7 am on weekdays, closes at 9:30 or so at night, open til 7 pm on weekends. No pool, but plenty of machines and free weights. Everyone is there to get fit--if you are looking for something else, try a dating service. Talk to Butch, he is the membership guy, he is a nice guy and cooperative. Towels may not be from House Beautiful but they are clean, as is the gym.

the best is Body Reserve on 5th ave.
  • emilianoz, the Best and close to you is Body Reserve on 5th ave.
  • So did we ever cover prices for one person monthly fee at either Slope fitness, NYSC or the Y? If anyone knows that'd be great.
  • I go to Body Reserve and I'm a petite non weight lifting woman. It's friendly, fuss free, and its members do not consist of lame lonely single men or meatheads, which is a wonderfully refreshing change from the crunch i used to go to.

    It's very mixed.
  • Body Reserve's diverse clientele is made up of people of all walks of life seeking cheap gym solutions. At any given time, you might encounter muscular meat-heads, skinny intellectuals, and new mothers shedding pregnancy pounds.

Body Reserve's staff is up-front about their services and rates. During business interactions, they were indifferent to my financial commitment, unlike prototypic gym sales sharks who stalk you for weeks demanding permanent access to your credit card to cover incalculable fees.

Wherever you sign up, always check the contract for clauses, like "our gym will deduct payment from your bank account forever unless you provide a hard-copy letter from a real estate company claiming that you have relocated outside of New York State."

My only fear about Body Reserve is that one day the treadmill balcony will topple, making headlines in the Park Slope Paper.
  • I joined The Slope back in February. Seems nice. To be honest I don't go as much as I should. I go at night and it's usually kind of empty. I mostly do the treadmill and the cable machine and free weights. I think it's about $95 a month. My only complaint so far (board shilling aside...I can't speak to that as I'm new) is that the built-in TVs on the treadmill only seem to get 2 channels and they are boring. It seems like there is always a Dish TV screensaver running on one so I presume they might get Dish but it never seems to work. What I do like its that the equipment seems pretty new and in good shape (my old gym...eesh) and it's 3 blocks from me so I might actually go regularly.
  • The NYCS machines (while a bit more than 2 channels) usually get crap TV as well. Occasionally I can find a sports game which is nice to watch, but mostly I have my choise of MTV/VH1 type crap. I wish they'd make some treadmills that allowed you to put in your own DVD to watch while you ran.
Also, for what it's worth I pay $69/mo at NYSC for a passport membership so I can go to any one of them, any time.
  • The Y has loads of channels. Plus their equipment's pretty new.
  • I've been a member of Body Reserve for years, and I love it... but MAN do I wish they'd hang a tv or two by the treadmills and the elipticals. Just something, anything. If you're a member, and you'd like TVs, ask at the front desk! Maybe if enough people said something they'd install a few...
  • Not many people have menitoned the delightful Harbor Fitness, I used to belong to the NYSC on 9th, but I really didn't like the staff and I found it to be a boring place to work out. At Harbor I got a month of personal training free for signing up (which I needed to learn how to work out) and they have an incredible rooms for spining and yoga, not to mention a lot of great equipment and its rarely crowded.

If only any of that helped me go more!

  • I love Harbor, but it isn't convenient to 4th and Bergen - perhaps that's why nobody has mentioned it.
  • Yeah, I'm certainly skirting the boundaries of what is considered NOT park slope, but I'm a rebel so here we are.
  • That's still PS, just not near 4th and Bergen
  • Thanks for sticking up for me! I have some address-related inadequacy issues
  • Subject: fitness collective is great

the fitness collective is great for classes and personal training. www.fitnesscollective.com
they have one in cobble hill and one in park slope

    very casual and homey friendly
  • i go to the nysc on mercer st in NoHo. its one of the best gyms around.
  • What do you guys think about the NYSC on 96 Boerum Place? Is it clean? I am thinking of joining NYSC but wanted to get an honest opinnion about this location? Basically is it clean? is the staff nice? are the classes okay?
