quick question - dr. holloway at animal kind?
Hi. I was trying to bring my cat somewhere near by and would have gone to Dr. Salas if she was still around. Since she isn't, I tried to get an appt. with dr. Holloway at Animal Kind (who was mentioned in the Animal Kind thread) and they said there is no one there by that name. ??
There's also a holistic vet someone on the Carroll Gardens board recommended Dr. Morris but I was hoping to go closer right now. My kitty has a bit of an eye infection which Dr. Salas looked at initially and I just want to make sure he's okay.
I don't want to go to park slope Vet(maddon/parker) - just mixed reactions to going there although I'm sure it would be fine. Hope Vet, which I have mixed feelings on also based on an experience but I ilke for some things, Dr. Young is away til next Friday. (plus it is further away...)
So IS it dr. holloway that some people have been to?
Thanks.

Dr. Holloway is at Prospect Park Animal Clinic on Prospect Ave and 6th St, 718-768-6125. My cat loves her.

If you do want to go to Animal Kind.. ask for Dr. Stronger or Dr. Jodi Weiner... both excellent vets and caring kind ladies who are easy to communicate with..
-
ah! I followed the thread to the wrong place. okay, thanks!
And thanks for the other vet choices as Animal Kind. Appreciate it!

Subject: Dr Salas left
When did Dr S leave Animal Kind? We had her in November..... just curious. -
there's also another wonderful vet at AK, don't remember his name but he's young and gently and east indian. very kind.
-
that would probably be dr. sondhi. nice guy.
-
yes, that's him. he was so kind to my deranged cat.
-
I did use Dr. Sondi a while back for one of my guys. I have 2 maltese who are now 7 and 8 years old... quite healthy but one of them has has afew bouts with colitis and Dr. Sondhi was in charge of an overnite admission. Boris was fine and of course the bill was high and I paid it knowing he had gotten excellent care.
Gee I hate to sound like a typical PS woman.. but in general I prefer using the women vets at AK. -
lol, did you know that majority of vet students are now women?

Well I think that is just terrific. I hope the day where we can say that women are the majority in people medicine and law and science and whatever!!!
Seriously.. as a generalization I think Women's people skills tend to be fine tuned and in Vet medicine especially that is an asset. -
Subject: women vets...
you know... I was just thinking earlier that I'd rather have a woman vet and I was wondering why that *was.* Is that a stereotypical Park Slope thing??
I think it is the people skill 'thing' and a certain empathy. Obviously not all women are like this - especially when they go into politics! - but it does seem like in animal care they are. (There is a very rude and inconsiderate male vet in Kensington named Dr. Keschner and I cannot imagine a woman being anywhere near as rude and basically mean-spirited to people as he is.)
Although I guess this is also perhaps about not having a WHITE male (patriarchy anyone?), what you said about Dr. Sondhi ... I would consider him.
I don't know when Dr. Salas left. I just found out here on this board about a month ago. I called Animal Kind yesterday when I thought Dr. Holloway was at AK and asked about Dr. Salas. Apparently she is going to be a vet in Spain. SO many people loved her. I wish I had stayed in better contact with her. She took care of injured pigeons I brought to her and was so amazing about it. She was just refreshing! That's probably why she had to leave NY. She was almost too unique a soul to remain here I think... -

did i say something wrong? i only referred to him by his ethnicity because i wanted to describe him. just as if i'd call someone asian, jewish, latina, etc.

no you didn't say anything wrong! you mentioned Dr. Sondhi before some people mentioned preferring female vets! So then I thought (out loud) maybe it's white male vets who are sometimes (not always, of course) more difficult to deal with.
People on this list have definitely suggested male vets over the course of many threads but then someone up above said he or she prefers female vets and I agreed. There's something about men entering the medical profession that seems to go hand in hand with a certain brusqueness. But when you said Dr. Sondhi was very kind, I was thinking that many Indian men are a bit more gentle and kind in their demeanor so that led to my comment. sorry! It wasn't you! And of course I'm the one who is generalizing ... but it's based on my experience. -
thank you.
it's funny, because my dad was a doctor and my uncle a vet, and back then there were few women doctors or vets, and i've never even considered who i want to see/not see.
no, actually i'm wrong. men. i'm used to seeing men, even for very personal health matters. i don't know why, and everyone i know thinks i'm nuts about this. -
After loads of rough medical issues with our kitties, we've seen almost every doctor at Animal Kind. Gotta say that my favorite was Dr. Thompson. He only works there part time - maybe 1 or 2 days a week, and sometimes not at all. But it's worth seeing if he's around. We try to see him every time we go back but haven't had the best of luck.
He's just incredibly kind, caring, and normal. It may be because he isn't a full time staff member, but he never was pushy about making us run tests or get medicine he wasn't sure would do anything. Above all else, I trusted him completely.
But all the Animal Kind vets have been pretty good. I'd also recommend Dr. Weiser. She's a little crazy but very sweet & thorough.

Dr Thompson is great, as is Dr Speigel and Dr Weiser. Dr Salas is supposedly coming back this summer?

Since folks are talking vets...
I really need a recommendation for my kitty. Just needs a check-up and some shots. But Animal Kind and Hope Vet are both pretty far away for me.
The 5th Ave Cat Clinic would be VERY convenient, but I've read that a few on this board have had bad experiences there, so I’m hesitating... Has anyone had a good experience there? Just for a general visit? Also, what about the place on 6th and Union? Any feedback on that?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -
NO to Dr Dentler.. 6th ave and Union.
-
My Kitty, and my chihuahua and also minpin LOVE DR. Holloway, she's gentle and patient with them, we've been seeing her for years. Highly recommended! She is at Prospect Park Animal Clinic, though.
-
I've never had any problem with Animal Kind. At least once, they were the only local hospital that would take my pet in the middle of the night.

I won't go on and on raving about Animal Kind like I have in the past on this forum.. cause you all might think I own it... from your mouth to G-d's ears!!
But gotta say that Dr. Jodi Weiser is terrific.. she is young but knows her medicine and loves the animals and is clear and straightforward with owners. Though Dr. Matyak is my prime vet my close second is Jodi. -

Did you know that is because vets can work flexible schedules which is much easier when you decide to have children. And family life is ONE reason people are fleeing Obstetrics (besides lawsuits)--people don't want unpredictable hours anymore with two parents working. And a reason why dermatology is becoming a crowded field (9-5 hours) -
WTGirl.. I really understand what you are trying to get across in your post. My daughter and my son-in law are both doctors. This memorial day they will be married 10 years. My daughter is a pediatrician and my son in law is ob/gyn. My daughter has found it possible to find that flexible enough schedule. There are kids that need a mom and dad in the picture. It is my son in law who has the most conflict because he is in OB and a dedicated physician and it is near impossible to balance time so he can be in medicine and be there for his patients and be the present dad that his heart tells him he must be for the kids.
Veterniary medicine does have that flexibility and women are smart enough to consider that when deciding go in to the field. Animal KInd does have more women vets at any given time (though people do come and go) than men. To me that reflects the large available pool ofwomen vets Dr. Gibson chooses from and HIS sensitivity in choosing his staff. I guess but have a sense that if 2 equally qualified vets show up for interview the one that gets
the job is the woman IF her emotional level is high class and her people skills are A plus and her sensitivity is highly developed.. Admit it.. Women excell in those feely, touchy , reach out skills. -
just another shout-out for animal kind. i've had i think just about every vet there over the past 4 years i believe (my cat likes to have an emergency just about every pay day...gotta love her).
my main go-to person is dr. murphy, but i've never had an issue with any of the other doctors.
the best thing about them though is that you can almost always get a same-day or next-day appointment even if it's not an emergency. -
the best part about animal kind is this animal handler they have, ben. he's amazing. i have the most deraged cat on earth (it's true, others will vouch for this. she attacks people, lunged at my mother...) this man, ben, walked over and picked her up and she didn't moan or hiss or look freaked out. it was pretty shocking, because i'm always convinced she's going to slice people up

I think I know who "Ben" is/// I have 2 Maltese dogs who are well behaved but I have seen how calm they seem to be when he handles them.
Howdy, Stranger!
