Getting to Ikea from PH — Brooklynian

Getting to Ikea from PH

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
I need a little advise here...
I would like to make an Ikea trip soon, and am having trouble figuring out which Ikea to go to & how to get there.
I am car-less, and would like to go on a Friday or Monday to avoid the weekend craziness.
This rules out the free bus to Elizabeth, NJ.
I've seen Armchair's ad - but am worried that 2 hours of shopping time is not long enough.
Any brilliant ideas?

Thanks!

  • I'd say go to the one in Hicksville, it looks like the LIRR goes right by it.

    Good luck!
  • Talk to Armchair about staying longer.

The LIRR is near the Hicksville one (about 10 minute walk or an easy cab), but do you really want to (or could you) haul your crap back on the train?
  • Thanks for the tips!

If I went to Long Island I would hire someone to meet me there at the end of the day & drive all my crap back.

It still seems like Armchair is the best bet. I'm just suck a slooooow meticulous Ikea shopper....
  • My two cents: LI Ikea is way more crowded with less parking than NJ (although I guess the parking is not an issue for you), and, NJ does not charge tax up front. Are there no longer buses from Manhattan to the NJ Ikea?
  • There is a free bus from Port Authority to Elizabeth Ikea - but only on Sat. & Sun. I wanted to go on a weekday...

Good to know that the LI Ikea is more crowded, though. I assumed the opposite.

    Thanks!
  • goto elizabeth one. saves yourself on taxes. ride the free bus there and call anyone up on criags list to pickup from ikea.

well mines is 80 hehe. regardless. you can always set up a time for me to pick you up from there. for ikea its always good to call a day ahead(3 days for weekend)
  • Ikea's website allows you to check what's in stock at which place. If you're going for something in particular, check that it's in stock. Big saving of headaches, that.
The Paramus store is the best run, imho. And closed on Sundays.
Elizabeth has the warehouse, so if you're getting something like a kitchen counter, it could be in stock there and not at the other stores . . .
  • My top tip (which maybe I should keep top secret...!) is the NJ Transit Bus #111. From Port Authority, $4.50 (I think - maybe even $4.25) one way. It is just the best thing for the carless amongst us. Never again will I submit myself to the anarchy of the free weekend Ikea bus!

    Schedule is found here: http://www.njtransit.com/sf_bu_schedules.shtml

(This is for the Elizabeth Ikea, by the way.)
  • My plan is to wait until Ikea comes to us. Anyone know when the Red Hook store is due to open?

I love the paramus store! but yeah, it requires my friend with the mini van to be available and wanting furniture/cheap linens.
  • Maybe you could start an IKEA carpooling interest thread on this board, get a few people together who were interested in going (preferably one with a zipcar account) and rent a car for the day (or part of a day), splitting the expenses.
  • I think the best thing you can do in going to either Ikea is to do it on a weekday instead of a weekend. Take a vacation day if you work weekdays; it will TOTALLY be worth it. Weekends at either Ikea are hell on earth.
  • Yeah, there's basically NO LINE for the Swedish meatballs on weekdays. I think that says it all.

cool :), i had customers who went out there but didn't know how during the weekdays. well saves yourself on taxes and a crowd!

I think they haven't started work yet b/c the folks in Red Hook don't want an Ikea there, and the battle still hasn't been resolved. Check out this article from November 2006:

*sigh* I wish we could ship the nimbys out of our back yard and back where they came from.

    To quote that article...
outdated article wrote: "The Municipal Arts Society has sued the Army Corps of Engineers to stop it from allowing IKEA to destroy a Civil War-era ship-repair facility slated to become a parking lot."
Well, the law suit ended up dead in the water (so to speak), for not only is the graving dock now history...

"Red Hook Graving Dock is Toast" (with graving dock fill and construction pics):
    http://www.curbed.com/archives/2007/03/06/the_red_hook_graving_dock_is_toast.php

...but the overall project has also swung into high gear out of the demolition phase and into the actual construction phase:

    "Ikea Rising" (more great pics)
    http://kensinger.blogspot.com/2007/03/ikea-rising.html

So it's definitely very much underway.

My guess for opening: Summer 2008 or Spring 2009 (depending on any subsequent legal, landscaping and/or traffic construction project delays).

But that's just my lame guess.
  • You guys are amazing! The #111 bus & Armchair combo sounds like exactly what I was hoping for. Thanks!
  • Ikea construction in the 'Hook continues, in spite of the whiners.
Expect spring '08 opening ... since the structural steel is going up now ...
and the building is of a rather uncomplicated design.
As for traveling to a local Ikea - Elizabeth is the thing, car or no car. But that's the closest solution for you and everyone else, especially on weekends. Take the advice of others - go mid-week.
I need to find a "secret" Ikea.
  • Ikea in Elizabeth does also have a delivery service. It's not necessarily super-cheap, but it's fairly convenient and you can choose which day in a 2-week (I think) period you want the stuff delivered. When my husband and I moved into our apartment a year ago, we had the delivery service bring us 2 small armchairs, a few rugs, a dresser and some assorted odds and ends. I think it was perhaps $100 for the delivery. It was worth it for us not having to rent a minivan and drive to Elizabeth and back!

I also second the "go on a weekday" sentiment. The place is light years different in the middle of the week. It's - dare I say it? - pleasant.
  • going to Ikea is like my real xmas
i'm gonna try the #111 + AW combo

I was at the Elizabeth ikea yesterday (Sunday), and it was pleasant. YMMV
  • If anyone wants to split some sort of transit service to haul stuff back PM, please. Maybe we can drum up some business for Mr. Armchair Warrior.

One of my favorite theme parties involved taking the bus out to IKEA and doing a scavenger hunt where you had to interpet a thought/scene/sentence using the prefab rooms, and take pictures. Results were hilarious.

Did you order online or go into the store? Man, if I could do this from my desk and completely avoid the insanity, all the better.
  • a bunch of stuff is only available in the store, so if you're in for the bits and pieces, you have to go. If you're ordering furniture or cabinets, maybe it's worth the big delivery fee.
I was going to do that for my bed, but suffered big delivery sticker shock and conned someone into Zipcaring it with me . . .

I went to the store - I needed to see the rugs in person. I also wanted some of the bits and pieces that were only sold in-store. Also, the Swedish meatballs were sweetly crooning my name and I felt the primal need to respond.

I always get sucked in by the meatballs (what are they, like 18 for 35 cents?), but I always feel worse for the wear later...

I'm sorry, those things are dog food.
My Minnesota Hot Dish spouse goes right for 'em tho . . .

They can't be dog food - they're too cheap...

They're the meat version of ikea furniture--they look like meat on the outside but inside it's a bunch of stuff chopped up and pressed together.
