jeannette,
my mother lived in senegal for a year and she lives just a few blocks from your restaurant. my entire family LIVES for tiebou dienne and yassa au poulet but we are all trying to eat lighter food. do you have any dishes that are more heart healthy? -
i got a tour of the Y this weekend and signed up right away. If you have health insurance that is covered by the Y (I have Oxford and it's covered) you get 20% off the already low price, so I'm paying under $30 per month. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful, the equipment is great, the locker rooms are also awesome (steam room & sauna!). I wasn't shown an indoor track though... I definitely would not make the 20 minute walk to and from after dark but the price is unbeatable so i'll do it in the daytime.

Great tip! You also get 20% off the monthly fees if you work for the city or the state and can present a valid employer ID. -
I think that the indoor track is still being completed. When I was there the staff member told me that the completion date is in August. She said that since they didn't finish it for the grand opening, all members will not have to pay their membership fee in December 2007. She explained that getting one month free would be their gift to us for being patient.

omg. i love that Y.. I joined.. the only thing i found quirky that i didnt notice on my tour..the womens locker rooms have small plastic stools instead of benches..which is minor..since i only pay $27 a month.. (because of the health insurance discount)..
but in regards to accepting families, i think bed stuy in general is an accepting community. i doubt it should be an issue. esp in nyc.
as far as safety - i live on a street closer to fulton but south of nostrand..i would never walk down any of those streets to cut across to my st. tompkins.. i prefer to walk down halsey since the bus is on that street. (it feels safer)..but in general im impressed with the police presence in the stuy..i doubt if walk fast anything can happen..that wouldnt happen anywhere else.,..but that bedford and monroe area is kinda spooky...but u should b good.
Howdy, Stranger!
