Anyone checked out the new store on Vanderbilt, where Delicacies was? I think it's called Jeune's.

  • anyone? bueller?
  • Where is it exactly?
  • stopped by on Saturday, and granted it was her test day and all, wasn't too impressed. it's basically delicacies gone downmarket. lots and lots of boar's head brand in the back, and bread that claims to be french but tastes more like the generic italian from C-town. will go back though. i suppose we ought to tell her what the n'hood is looking for and give her a chance to stock it. lady seems nice.
  • Thanks for your concern we do appreciate and take heed of your opinion...do mind we've just opened and we're still adjusting the little tweeks...Please feel free to voice your suggestions about our store online or in store...we appreciate all suggestions...thank you for your concern once again...Sincerealy Juene's Gourmet...Please come again...
  • Schaller & Weber would be great. Amy's Bread. If you're going to go the regular deli route like the bagel stores then Boars Head and Citterrio (did I spell that correctly?) is fine. Regardless, you should have newspapers. NY Times, Daily News and The NY Sun. Not necessarily in that order or importance.
  • Prosciutto. You should stock good prosciutto.
  • fat free organic milk, shredded cheese, some good produce from a quality farmer, tea's teas, gorilla coffee, organic eggs, whole wheat pasta, off the top of my head..
  • full fat organic cream. (not only to contrast with ltjbukem, but also because I can't drink non-fat rl milk)

Welcome to the neighborhood! I haven't had a chance to stop by yet but hope to later on this week.

There was a thread earlier when people were wondering about whether Delicacies had closed in which lots of folks talked about what kind of foods they'd love to see available in the neighborhood -- you should check it out, might give you some ideas for things to consider stocking:

  • Been reading this board for some time, but this is the first thread that has motivated me to join and post.....Please, Please, Please listen to some of the suggestions which have been made. Delicacies was perfect in theory, they were just understocked and the owners, althoug nice, didn't seem to have the best business sense.

There clearly is a void for higher-end food products in the neighborhood, and its only a matter of time until it is successfully filled.....may as well be you! Best of luck.......

For all of the shillers out there, this is the right way to post about your business on this board.

Best of luck to Juene's Gourmet! :D
  • Boylan's sodas, please! (especially the Cola)
    Belgian beers

agreed. . . but about that avatar. . . the first time, it was pretty funny. about the 10th time it cycled through, the violent spatter had eclipsed the humor and it had become just sickening. by about the 50th time, it was no longer amusing or stomach-churning but just incredibly annoying.

make it stop before it kills again!
  • Mrs. C and I checked this out today and for now, I've got to agree with phil&ted above. Kind of just generic deli stuff with lousy-looking bread plus a few leftover items from Delicacies. I want to like this place, but it seems like they're going in a totally different direction than Delicacies. I hope the owners take some of the suggestions here to heart and expand their inventory. Otherwise the closing of Delicacies will have been a really big loss. A regular deli may in fact be very successful in that location, but it won't really add anything new to the neighborhood.

The former owners of Delicacies sold their shop for personal reasons, not due to lack of business savvy.

    DAMN YOU, SMOKIN' JOE!

Don't you know that was ketchup?
  • ok, well this will teach me to complain about someone else's avatar.
  • I must say this is a great forum to voice everything that's on our mind.... Jeune's Gourmet appreciates all of your concerns and are looking out for your needs.

If it's more inventory your looking for it will soon come to your liking...the inventory in the store is newly stocked and leftovers will be of the past.

For those who may like Boar's Head deli stuff it will be there for you...if you like other items other than boars head it will be there for you as well.

Your statements are duly noted about what is there...I will give everyone the opportunity to enjoy a variety of taste....Your suggestions are valued
so we can continue to approve upon things....Your always welcome to stop by the store and tell us what you like. I have my pen and pad ready to make a list.

By the way bread will be delivered this Saturday..for those of you who enjoyed the bread please stop on by...again a few tweeks can be made and nothing is set in stone with the bread and any overall item...so I'm quite positive Jeune's Gourmet will do it's best to accomodate the needs of the neighborhood. At the end of the day your satisfication is the ultimate goal for us at Jeune's Gourmet.

Thank you and have a lovely day...again please come visit us at Jeune's Gourmet.
  • i know this is a stretch, but an online site with all products would be great. also, if you can call your order in for pickup would be great too. again, i know it's a stretch, but something to shoot for...

i know union market allows you to call in your orders.
  • I went in to Jeunes, the deli looked tasty, the staff was really friendly and accessible and they had some nice looking biscuits. I plan to get a sandwich there soon, so I will post a review.

For me, a place selling English biscuits and chocolate, like Java Joes in park slope does, would be very valuable. I have an English wife whose homesickness is only tempered by Chocolate Digestive biscuits, Malteasers, and Penguins. Fresh mozzarella would be great... actually, has anyone ever tried Fresh Cilantro chutney (cilantro, mint, coconut, lemon juice, salt and chili) and fresh mozzarella toasted on pita, like a pizza? its really good. i would love some of that.
  • I bought a sandwich last Friday. It was pretty good. It was a combo Boars Head with regular and cappicola with tomato, onion, pickles and three slices of cheese with mayo both sides. Extra mayo and extra meat on a cibiatta(?). All for $7.50. It was done as requested and it was a nice size. I also had a chicken pasta soup which was also good. My only peeve, no diet soda or rare roast beef. Saying that, I suggested those two things to the owner which she duly noted. It also seems they're waiting for more supplies. Nice staff, nice place.
  • I cant find Jeunes!~ Where is it?
  • brooklynleather wrote: I cant find Jeunes!~ Where is it?
    Where Delicacies used to be.
  • not sure if anyone else mentioned it already, but they carry amy's bread now.

    That is excellent!

MET makes solid sandwiches for ONLY $3 (roll) or $3.50 (hero). You can choose your own roll from the bread boxes. Nothing gourmet, but a lot more meat than you would get from Subway for twice the price.
  • Yeah, I gotta say, if I'm going to pay $7.50 for a sandwich in our neighborhood, it's going to have to be extra-spectacular. And that does not mean Boar's Head.
This place needs to go either super-high-end and foody, which means artisinal and local and organic and not Boar's Head, or decide that they're a cheaper deli sandwich shop, skip the pretence of fanciness, and lower the prices. Can't be both.
  • It was $7.50 for double meat, as in 3'' thick sans bread plus tomato and a ciabatta that was as long as a regular hero. $7.50 is a bargain even if it's Boars Head. The only two places that I can think off that make bigger sandwiches for a little bit more using Boars Head is La Bagel Delight and the Korean Place on 7th Ave between Berkeley and Union. Try getting a sandwich the same size with Citterrio or Schaller Weber or "artisinal or organic" and you'll be paying a lot more. Go to D'Vine Taste and Union Market and you shall see.

I have bought sandwiches at Met. The bread is good but the fillings are slim and sometimes not that fresh, I would say that $3 is right on target if not over priced for what you're getting.
  • Lured out of lurkdom because I really want to support this place, but it really has an identity problem. I've been in twice--once, just to check it out (bought gelato), and another time looking for Parmigiano-Reggiano. (They don't have it--all of the cheese is now deli stuff.) The staff was really nice, but they responded to my request for Parm like I was asking for something totally outlandish. If they want to do this sort of shop, I wish they'd model if after Blue Apron. Otherwise, they would maybe do better to become a nice, reliable deli (and maybe lose the "Gourmet").
