Car repair in Park Slope?

Ok, so now that we got a 10-yr old SUV, 90% of my posts are about street parking and now auto repair. Can anyone recommend a good repair shop in the Slope? Anything along 4th Ave?

  • My SUV is 6 1/2 years old, but knock wood, I haven't had to do anything major to it ('cept for my fun overheating fiasco on the Jersey Tpke due to broken thermostat). For very simple things like oil changes, and brakes I've gone to Pep Boys on 4th with no problem. Don't know if they offer (or are qualified) to do anything more challenging.
  • Subject: Bear Service

Go to Jerry at Bear Service on 4th Ave @ 1st St (next to the car wash) When I had older cars a decade ago I went to him - worked out fine.
    Can do all major repairs.
I've only gone to Pep Boys for my annual inspection. Just more convienient then shlepping it to the dealer.
  • I hope you won't need it, but there is a certain inevitability . . .
Joe's Auto Glass on Seventh Ave around 19th St -- it's just over the Prospect Exp on the right side of the street if you're facing Greenwood.
He's a good guy, and fixes up those smashed little windows for cheap....
  • Thanks all. Our 96 Explorer failed its emissions test (actually, the test returned a "Not Ready" result, which caused us to fail) and was suffering from a persistent "Check Engine" light. None of the Ford dealers in Bklyn had software that could talk to the car, so we ended up taking it to the dealer in Manhattan.

    Very. Bad. Idea.

$1200. Total insanity. I'm so fatigued by the ordeal I forced my husband to call them and deal with it. I just wanted a car to go pumpkin picking... I forgot how much I hate cars.
  • The Ford dealers around here are crap (take this from a long time Explorer owner). I try to stay away from them whenever possible. If I simple MUST go to a dealer, I try to go near my mom's house in PA - at least I can get an appointment there.
