Sewing Supplies in PS?

Anyone know where someone can pick up sewing supplies in Park Slope? Buttons, yarn, string, that type of thing?

Thanks!

  • We should be that lucky. I'm surprised there isn't one farther up 5th Avenue. Here's a thread on it from a few months ago.

  • You can get yarn and some buttons at Stitch Therapy on Lincoln @ 7th or at Knit-A-Way on Atlantic Avenue.

Thread and needles and that type of notion are harder to find. Target has a little bit of basic supplies. So do some of the larger drug stores.

Hmmm.... I think I know what kind of store I should open. I bet a Park Slope version of Purl Fabric would do really well.
  • Yeah, I find it hard to believe that PS doesn't have a sewing store of some kind. I'm still waiting for the day when someone opens a store that is different from all the others. They all seem to be cookie cutter stores.
  • Park Slope used to have a quilting store on 7th Ave (near 4th Street), but, sadly, they've closed. The nearest quilt shop I know of that's still open is City Quilter on 25th Street in Manhattan (you'd take the F to get there).

If you're looking for something a little more knitting-related than sewing-related, Stitch Therapy is a good place to start. Beyond the yarn and buttons that caseopele mentioned, they also have knitting needles and crochet hooks, and a good number of books, magazines, and patterns.

As for sewing supplies, unless you need more than a basic sewing kit for simple button-reattachment and the like, you'll probably be able to get the basics if you look hard enough in the local chain drugstores and supermarkets.
  • Well it's not in PS, but take the F to Carroll street and walk to 128 Union St (towards the water)-- there you will find The Brooklyn General Store... I was there yesterday and it has all sorts of notions, fabrics, yarn, threads, a few buttons. It's worth checking out. http://www.brooklyngeneral.com/
