curious chinese food pricing

so i've been on this chinese broccoli and steamed dumplings craze for quite a while now, and i'venoticed some curious things: at each chinese retaurant i try, the price for both is the same, with tax: $15.10. and they all want an extra dollar for chinese broccoli (except #1 garden, but uncle liao's didn't start till today).

is there some conspiracy where all the restaurants gather together and decide what to charge for things?

  • Maybe they're being run by the same (extended) family...? I've worked for restaurant families, before - brothers, sisters, cousins, all of them with restaurants, similar fare, similar pricing... Or maybe they just scope out the pricing on the competition...
  • ooh Uncle liao's... got reallly sick last time I ate there..
    Watch out!!
  • or it could be like the ... 6th street? ... indian food street. the folks that introduced me to that street when I was an nyc n00b told me that the general consensus was that a centrally located kitchen existed in the middle of the block where all of the food was prepared.
  • Yes Alafairnadia... What you propose is an Urban Legend!!

Go to sleep.. it is late!!
  • Heh...I do think one place probably prints most of the Chinese menus and just changes the name/color. I've noticed an amazing consistency right down to spelling errors.
  • most of the time they would use the same suppliers and they change prices if the competition changes prices. and btw ;) i really don't know how half of these guys make money.

I lived in the middle of that street around 1987. As much as I love Indian food, after living with the constant smell of it for a year I avoided it for about two years afterward ...
  • I have 2 friends who lived across the street from each other on that block for about 5 years! They couldn't get enough of it! I also have another friend who lived above Haveli on 2nd ave off the corner of 6th. He loved it too.
