found kitten, yes another! Bergen and Vanderbilt
Hey,
I grabbed a kitten that seemed to be lost or abandoned this evening on Bergen right off of Vanderbilt on the east side where that really sweet painter sets up shop on warm days. The cat (pictured below) was huddled between the corner building's wall and a garbage can.

I grabbed it and put in a box and brought the dirty guy home. He's pretty skinny and was psyched to get some food.
1. My main concern is that this cat actually belongs to the old woman that lives in the house on Bergen b/t vanderbilt and underhill. She lives in the house between the parking entrance for the brownstone units on Bergen and an abanonded looking lot to the left of it. The cat looks a lot like a cat I see in her window. Does anybody know her name? I have to go ask her if I accidentally nabbed her cat.
2. If it's not her cat, but is someone else's please let me know.
3. And if doesn't seem to be anyone's, I need to find this little darling a home. He/she looks about 6 months old and is a real lover. Loves to be scratched behind the ears. If you're interested let me know by PM me.
Thanks

I think this cat is part of a litter that lives right next to the house on Bergen (in the lot) and I have seen the cat in that woman's window. Im not sure if it is her's or if there is a way for the cat to get in and out of the house. I know the church on Pacific checks in on her often so if you want to call Father Bob at St. Joseph's he would know or be able to find out.

omg i was gonna post about seeing white people over there today with plastic bag and a cage
. i thought you guys were dealing something or catching something hehe. -
Oh I think my landlord owns that building and it was his sister that had the cats. He told me she's mentally disabled and she's moved somewhere last month, I think (not sure where). I remember seeing a calico kitten in the window a week or 2 ago. If you can't find out through Father Bob, I may be able to ask my landlord. He seems like a nice guy so far, I just moved into one of his buildings in November. He bought it about 3 weeks before I signed the lease and is very good about fixing it up. Let me know and thank you for taking the kitty in!

Heya Lulu's Momma,
Just a friendly modly reminder that it's NEVER a good idea to post a personal email address here or on any public web forum. Aside from any weirdos it might attract (we have no control over who views this site, after all), it puts your email out there on the Internet for spammers' harvesting bots (which, again, we have no control over).
More info on this at Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_address_harvesting
I'll leave it up to you to decide whether to edit your post to remove the email address, but I would encourage you to just ask folks to PM you for your email address in the future. -

Hmmm. well I just had a cardbox, so that wasn't me, but it may have been Slope Street Cats who catch, fix, and release the strays that live around there.

thanks everyone for replying with info (and thanks apollonia666 for the advice on the email). I'll see what I can find out about the kitty. she/he sure is a sweetheart.

it looks like they were getting a cat. -
Update for all of you at the edge of your seats. So it looks like this cat was the old woman's but when she moved she left it (possibly along with other cats) out to fend for itself.
I got the scoop from the sweet painter on the corner of Bergen and Vanderbilt who is/was her neighbor.
My next step is taking her to the vet, hopefully on Tuesday, to make sure she's on the mend. She's incredibly dehydrated but is gobbling up her food and drinking water. She's even litterbox trained!
After that she'll be looking for home so if anyone is looking for a sweet pea of a kitty please PM me. She's seriously the most mellow cat I've ever met. She let me bathe her today (in water!) without much of a fuss. She was simply holding onto the bucket as I scrubbed her back with shampoo and poured water over her to rinse her off. I've never seen a more subdued kitty in my life.
She also loves, loves, loves to be pet and scratched behind the ear. She's quite the purrer and is way ready to snuggle. She also seems pretty mellow with dogs. While I haven't let Lulu and the little one totally get to know each other just yet, they've been two feet away from each other checking each other out without more than a warning hiss. I think with time she'll learn to love anybody and anything.
Ok that's enough of a sell. She's a steal I tell ya! -
I hope she finds a good home! I already have two neighborhood kitties in my home and it's just about at capacity. Good luck!

I have to say I am so impressed by those in Brooklyn who have stepped up to the bat to help animals in need. There are several other posts out there regarding cats needing homes, so you can refer to them to network your way to finding somewhere safe for this very greatful and loving cat.
I have never heard of anyone catching a cat and putting it in a garbage bag. No good would come of that since it won't be able to breath and the bag could break and the cat could run away (hopefully not into the street.) There's always a box to be found somewhere that you could put holes in so it can breath until you get to wherever you're going.
I will never understand how anyone can have an animal for any length of time and just move and leave it to fend on it's own. It doesn't work that way if you've fed it all it's life and it's been an inside cat. They don't know anything about the streets or how to survive safely.
I still say it's best to find an animal league to give them to rather than the ASPCA or animal control because they do have a time limit they can hold them and then they put them to sleep. They won't call you in advance to advise either ( or I wouldn't depend on them to do it.)
Anyhow, God bless you all for helping something so in need.
Karma will reward you with peace and good things for being who you are. [-o< -
ASPCA is NOT a kill shelter.
-
I've never understood people who toss their pets out onto the street. I found a little kitten last week on Franklin Ave that didn't just "get out on it's own". I also have never understood the people who are moving/don't have time/new baby and just "have to find the best home for the cat or dog. People don't think about the future before getting a pet. They decide they want one and deserve to get whatever they want.
Sorry for the rant but I spent 10 months looking for my current apartment. No one wanted to rent to someone with 2 dogs and 4 cats, even though I'm a pretty good tenant. -
the "sweet painter's" name is Ron.. The woman from the house is Louise. Ron's been here for a long time and is a very cool guy. It's good to know your neighbors names...
-
Ooh! thanks dh. Ron is an incredibly sweet guy. I always want to hug him when I see him out there painting.
I also don't understand how people throw out their pets, but I don't want to assume it was a conscious decision on Louise's part. From what I understand from talking to people on the forum and in the neighborhood is that she wasn't all there. And when you're taken to a home you usually can't take your pets so she was probably left without an option or wasn't even aware of what was happening.
Maybe I'm giving her too much credit, but I don't want to assume the worst. That said, the little one is doing really well. We're headed to the vet tomorrow to make sure she's on the mend. I need to figure out a name for her if you guys want to help. Maybe I'll put up a poll. At first I wanted to name her Minou, French Canadian for cat but then my friend Sarah said she looked asian (Sarah's Korean so it's only partially offensive). I half joked I should name her Dim Sum (more offensiveness) but then we both realized it was a pretty damn cute name. Thoughts?
I'm getting way too attached. Aren't I supposed to find a home for little Dim Sum? -

Only after you've already kept 3 for yourself... -
Subject: Dim Sum
I vote for Dim Sum. That's super cute. I think naming pets after food is awesome. My friends cat is called KungPow (sp?) as in the chicken dish. It's a damn cute kitty too.
You're a good person for taking this kitty in! Many hugs!
-
to lulu's momma, we have a german shepherd and 4 cats (for the moment. In fact, one is moving to Brooklyn this weekend with my daughter) and the dog loves, loves, loves the cats and vice versa. In fact, the dog's best friend is the one that's moving and she's going to miss him dearly. They sleep together on her dog bed and the cat wraps his paws around her muzzle while they sleep.
Also, I've been a property manager for over 20 years and I've never had a problem with animals..........it's the owners that have been a challenge.
In fact I've found that in life, it's the people who don't get the whole love of animals thing that tend to be those who are the ones I have the most problems with. -
Louise was not a well person, so I would not be the least bit surprised that she left the cats behind. There are lots of stray cats in that area and I don't know if Louise really owned that cat or if she just had strays going in and out of her house. The cats are probably better off without her, sadly.

Lulu's Mamma's in llllooooooovvvveeee!
The ones I've found and named? I've kept. -
If you're going Asian, I think she's a little "dumpling". That said, I give my animals people names, since I consider them part of the family.
How about Lucy Liu? Lucy and LuLu sound cute. -
How about the name Reilly? The reason being you could give it the "Life of Reilly" (which means carefree and happy) I rescued a kitten many years ago that took me 3 months of feeding before I could touch her, and when I took her in to live with us she was the most greatful being ever. She did so love her family and life.

Subject: kitty by my work?
i keep coming across this skinny kitty, no more than 6 mos old, by my job in gowanus. knelt down and s/he didn't approach me so maybe feral? should i just let the poor kitten be or call a TNR? -
To update everyone, I've decided to keep the little bugger. I knew when I put her in that god damn box that I was in for it, but it wasn't until I noticed how cross eyed she is that I gave her the keys.

Anyway, her official name is Dim Sum. She's healthy and eating tons. Thanks everyone for your help. Now what do we do about all the other kitties running around PH?
Brooklynleather, I would call TNR. Ferals can be incredibly hard to catch unless you have the proper cage. If they can't come down to help they may be able to tell you want you need to catch the little one. -
Yay! She's lovely.
-
I knew it!
Congrats! She's lovely- and so are you for keeping her. -
Ha! I knew it too! Good for you. Cross-eyed AND beautiful, little Dim Sum. Congratulations!
-
Dim Sum is adorable.
I will check in with the neighborhood folks to see if they know anything about the little monster and if not, will contact TNR. -
She's adorable! I love goofy looking animals. And she totally looks like a Dim Sum to me. Once the name hits it's all over, they're never leaving! I started fostering for Slope Street Cats and now have the Stubmeister occupying my bathroom. They couldn't pick him up until they had a place to put him. The more foster homes the rescue organizations have the more kitties they can rescue!
And I'll be honest, I resisted fostering for years because I thought I would get too involved. But I have my 4 ladies and 4 is my limit. Plus, when I got my pets I knew they were mine from the moment I saw them. Somehow I know that the fosters belong somewhere else, in another home. Not that I don't get attached, I do! But it helps to recognize that. Oh, and I also have a good setup in my new place to foster. So, if anyone can please foster!
And congratulations on rescuing that adorable girl! -
That's just great that you are keeping Dim Sum. How do you resist a face like that anyway???
To Brooklynleather, many animal organizations will lend out have a heart traps to safely catch strays. Don't give up on the feral baby. She needs someones help. I've worked with feral cats before and try to drop some food in a safe place every day at around the same time. I've conditioned all of my animals with specific whistles for each group, and that included the feral cats. Believe me,when they heard their whistle, they'd come running from all around the neighborhood. And that's how you begin to develop trust with them as well.
I have one totally feral cat that I fed for 12 years and only pet 3 times when I caught her to have her spayed by an animal group. That was OK with me because I just loved that something so wild could allow me to be part of it's life.
She'll always be special to me.
Keep helping the animals how ever you can. -
Yeahhhh!!! Congrats Lulu'smomma but we all knew she had you at "meow"

Big question is - how does Lulu like being a big sis?
dakotasway - I agree I have a whole posse in my yard and it is so rewarding especially when they start to trust you a little more
Howdy, Stranger!
