Franklin between Sterling and Park Place

Subject: oh my
I heard it all too and it really concerns me. There seem to be quite a few of us on this board who live on this block. What can we do to get this issue escalated at the precinct and addressed? The third time within a two week period with gunfire is not acceptable. I have lived here a year and have never heard gunfire until recently. Where are the police? I recommend that we all call the precinct tomorrow and ask for a stronger police presence. Other ideas?

i'll call tomorrow
we all should
it's imperative that there is a public outcry and that this area is properly patrolled -
I'm with you. Just FYI, I heard that there were also gunshots at 4 a.m. on Tuesday night, but if so, I slept through them.
Last night, as you probably know, police flooded the area. They blocked off Franklin from Sterling to Park. My husband saw one body on the street. The police fanned out, questioning lots of people. We heard the shooter ran down Park Place, but again, this is just hearsay. At 1 a.m. the cops called us (because we called 911 at the initial outburst of gunfire.) We were lousy witnesses, since we didn't really witness anything. But they said they hadn't yet caught the shooter. Which is a concern. I don't want to speculate but worry about full-scale trouble between two groups. -
Subject: #'s to call
I just called the Precinct and they said that we need to call the 77th Precinct Community Affairs Office and speak to Detective Raton or McClean (or McQueen?). The number there is 718 735 0634. -
I heard the shots. Thanks for filling in the details.

Subject: Bad scene
There was a lot of blood on the sidewalk this morning. I heard it was Kevin that was shot. He hangs out in front of the two bodegas on Park and Franklin every day. I've known him since I've been on the block (over 2 years) and he's always really cool and really nice. He was the first person I met on the block.
I heard from Dougie on Sterling that someone shot him in the face. I spoke with his next door neighbor who was definitely upset to hear the news.
I just hope somehow he's going to make it.
If anyone hears any more details, please keep us updated. -
Ugh, how awful.
I've been looking all over for any news coverage about this, but none has cropped up yet. If anyone finds anything, please share it here! -
Subject: I was there too
I heard the shots -- one, followed by 5 more, then my neighbor and I went to see (as did EVERYONE it seemed who lives on that corner). My neighbor said the guy was shot in the face, chubby, braids, 20-ish, stands on Franklin and Park ususally, and that he wasn't dead. They finally took him away, and I wonder if he made it or not. Intial police response seemed sluggish...?
Another neighbor who lives right there on Sterling, saw the shooter running away, westbound on Sterling -- she said he was tall, but that's all she saw.
People in my building were upset but resigned -- they kept saying "we almost made it through the summer." They are saying now that it's gonna be like a lockdown on our block.
Thanks to Crabby Native for directing me to the CH forum from my posting on the PH forum.

Subject: my report
I called 911 as soon as I heard it. I saw three young men running down the street towards Beford on Sterling, although I have no idea if they were involved in the shooting or just getting away from gunfire. I reported this to the police.
Does a lockdown mean strong police presence. My neighbor inquired the other day about what was being done on our block since last week's gunfire and they gave her a condescending reply. I hope this is taken seriously now and I hope that the fellow who was hurt is okay.

I spoke to Det. McLean who was very very good, present, eager to help. She said the victim is 24 years old and did die. Because of that, she said, the area will be getting a lot of attention. I also heard that the victim was shot in the face, was large, and generally hung out in front of the bodega on Franklin between Sterling and Park. I saw one guy running down Sterling right after the shooting, but I have no idea if he was involved, or just running from the shooting. He seemed to be carrying a small paper bag, that's it.
Det. McLean said some officers on the force were just commenting yesterday during the day how quiet Franklin had been lately.
Is this drug-related, does anyone know? Random? I also heard shot in the face, which made me feel targeted... -
Hi Masha,
Thanks for contacting the police. I called, too, but didn't get through to a detective. I will try again.
The night before the shooting, I was on way home (around midnight) and saw a glut of police officers (7 or more) standing outside the white buildings (or possibly La Renee) across from your house. So something is definitely up in the 'hood.
I'd really like to know what kind of crime it is we should be worried about -- is it drug-related or indiscriminate? If we knew, we'd at least know we're up against.
What I want to know is why none of the media outlets is reporting this? If the media was on the story, I think we'd feel a lot less helpless. I personally haven't found the police very helpful. When I called about the gunshots a few weeks ago, the person talking the phone calls didn't even seem to know the neighborhood, let alone what is going on.
Ugh.
It baffles me how a block could be so quiet for a year and then this! -
Margie, I have EXACTLY your question. Is it drug-related or random? Det. McLean said narcotics officers were involved in the investigation, for whatever that is worth.
Definitely give her a call if you have a chance. I found her very receptive, and I think it's good for her to hear our concerns... She told me: call ANYTIME something doesn't feel right to you. (that's pretty blanket, I know!) 718-735-0634 -
Masha99, thanks for all the info.
My neighbors, predicting a lockdown, were remembering past response to a shooting, and how the police presence was huge, with bright spotlights. I wasn't here yet, so don't remember.
What Det. McLean said about Franklin being quiet mirrors what my neighbors were saying about how there hasn't been a problem this summer yet. But what bklynbonnie comments on, about gunfire over the last couple of weeks shows that it is not as quiet as the police thought, and that maybe only a tragedy causes action... I too will call Det. McLean.
So glad I found this forum.

this is very sad news and my heart goes out to his family and friends.
i have been trying to reach Det McLean but haven't connected yet, just because we have the facts, each of us should make a point to contact the precinct and voice our concern, this is the ONLY way to make a difference
i have lived in a "difficult" neighborhood before (though nowhere near this extreme) and for a long time it felt like our precinct decided as long as the problems were contained in one area, so be it because they were going to be somewhere.
i am not saying this is the case, i am saying that if we don't want it to be, the only way to communicate that is to be extremely vocal.
if anyone one has a phone number for the brooklyn tv news station (i can't seem to find it) will you please call and report this. i just called ny1 (212-691-6397) who basically said they covered the shooting labor day but they can't cover everything, i said i just wanted to register that this seems to becoming a more major issue.
i didn't mention this in my report on the police community meeting monday, but Ins O'Connell did begin his presentation with the news that an intoxicated 15 year old had just been brought in with a double barrel shotgun. -
I personally welcome a lockdown then. When I've lived in other neighborhoods, seeing police around scared me. Now it's the opposite situation.
I hate to think of my upstairs neighbors (and all of my neighbors) worrying about the safety of their children (and themselves)! -

If you look on the websites for local tv stations, you can usually find a tips line or assignment desk line to call. For example, at NY1 it's 212-NY1-NEWS (212-691-6397). I'd call but it might be better from someone who lives closer to the area or one of you who witnessed it or were close by shortly afterward. -
Anyone else see the cops on Sterling Place on Tuesday night? Wondering if anyone has any info. there....
-
i was just walking my dog about an hour ago toward the corner of franklin and st johns by the church when i saw about three cop cars and a van pull over and near the lot with the fence about 10 cops circling there too , then about ten guy getting cuffed on there stomachs on classon between st john and sterlin , a cop grabbed my arm as i crossed the street and told me to go back the other way towards franklin. huh .
something is definitely up in the neighborhood. -
Subject: Lockdown
I moved in during the last "lockdown". Basically there was a temporary precinct set up on the corner of Franklin and Lincoln. Bright spotlights, cops on most corners.
I have noticed that since the cops started to disappear, the drug trafficking has increased in the visible sense. I see transactions constantly when walking down Franklin, but very rarely have I seen much conflict. I especially never noticed much between Kevin's group and anyone, and they were always bullshitting with the beat cops. This is really senseless and tragic.
The cops do have a good sense of the territory though, and I trust that there will be a crackdown.
If you're new to the neighborhood, I suggest definitely making a point to get to know the people who've been here through worse times than this. They're the people who've been fighting for years to make this the neighborhood what it is becoming. I love CH and PH, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. -
Thanks Mongrel for the good words. We're newcomers but also love the energy and authenticity of Crown Heights -- despite this -- and definitely want to continue to get to know the "oldtimers."
-
I agree with you, Mongrel. I really love the neighborhood, too. In fact, it's the friendliest I've lived in here in NYC. The other residents on Sterling have been wonderful and friendly.
I've never had a problem (nor heard of anything bad happening) for the year-plus I've lived here and I'm sorry to see someone lose his life in such a senseless way.
Now that you mention it, the police van and bright lights were there when I moved in, too. And, yes, I noticed more street activity when they left. -
This is not an isolated incident, the fact is that this type of stuff has been going on for years, although recently with new faces moving in and driving up rent and property values, the element which has plagued crown heights for years unfortunately still exists. To all new comers to the neighborhood and long time residents, please be vigalant and be aware of your surroundings. Dont be a victim, walk with your head up. Walking with your cell phone glued to your ear makes you a bigger target. The neighborhood is and will continue to get better, but it takes time. And to those wondering why you dont see the news crew on Franklin ave, this unfortunately is not newsworthy in Crown Heights, this is just another Homicide that our big safe city has logged in over the year, for it to make the news there has to be something sensational about the event. Also, perhaps the nice guy who stands in front of the bodega, day in and day out who gets shot point blank in the face might be involved in the drug trade plaguing Franklin ave.

Thanks, King!

Subject: another shooting
I spoke with a policewoman on the corner of St. John's (I think) and Franklin and was told that there was another shooting last night (before 9pm) on that corner. Anyone hear about that? -
You've got to be kidding me! This is starting to sound a little scary.
-
I just phone Det McClean but did not get through, and left a msg.
-
Bonnie, any details on the shooting?
Here's what I heard today from Rupert across the street. Apparently some of those shots were fired down Sterling because his van -- he showed me -- has two bullet holes in the front windshield. He said the cops were with him until 3 a.m. the night of the shooting. They recovered the bullets. He says the cops told him they know who the shooter is, but haven't got him yet. He also says the cops say the shooters were Crips, while those being shot at were Bloods. -
This sort of thing sucks. No person should lose their life this way. BUt the truth is any young man getting invovled in the drug game around here knows that it may happen to him.
To the people who live here and fear for their safety, all I can say is be smart, be friendly, and stay away from situations that are unsafe (ie. don't get your weed from the dude on the corner); you cannot rule out the random so be aware of what is happening in the street. And as sad as it is, this wasn't random.
And remember despite the violence around here there are more friendly and nice neighbors than bad ones. -
Lots of friendly neighbors, totally agreed.
And yes, everything you're saying about how to avoid this is completely true. Those of us with teenagers worry a bit, though, you know?
The other day a friend told me: Forget the epidurals at birth and just give them to us when our children become teens. -
Subject: there have been at least four shootings around franklin ave
I just moved to this area, and I'm already thinking of leaving. There have been at least four shootings in just the last four days. This is totally insane--I can't even begin to imagine how it could possibly be safe in this area, nor can I imagine how, just thisclose to park slope and prospect heights, there is ZERO coverage of this!!!!! We should start posting to park slope/prospect heights blogs and calling the media about this. There has to be some awareness that this level of violence doesn't just vanish on its own. People have suggested a revved up police presence? I think that as long as there is zero media attention, nothing real is likely to happen. My sense is that the City, with its Bloomberg-era denial, wants to pretend that crime is way down. According to a VV article, they simply underreport crime stats, and that's the feeling I'm getting here. This is simply insane.
Howdy, Stranger!
