Late night on Park Place

Just a note for people in the neighborhood. There have been two muggings on Park Place (one between Vanderbilt and Underhill, and another between Flatbush and Park). Just keep your eyes open when coming home late.

Yikes, Sorry to hear about these incidents. I hope no one was seriously hurt. Thanks for the reminder to be careful.

Thanks for the heads-up. Do you know when these took place? Was it the 'kid on a silver bmx bike' again?

  • a girl friend of mine from college was just mugged on a bike or by someone on a bike in the neighborhood but i don't really know the details as of yet. it was about a week or two ago.

this would be a good time to ask for tips on safety, self defense, and what have you.

One of my friend was just telling me last night that he also got mugged by a guy on a bike. The dude was actually riding his bike when it all went down, one hand on the handlebars, one hand grabbing onto his shoulder as he walked. But what can you do? Be fearful of every dude on a bike? What more can one do than be hyper aware of your surroundings when walking around alone at night? I guess self defense isn't a bad idea.

some details would be really helpful here if you know any--what time were they, how did they happen, description of perp or perps, etc.
  • Another bit of info that would be good to know -- any suggestions for what you guys consider the safest streets walking between Vanderbilt and Underhill or Washington? I usually go down Bergen or St. Marks if it's late, because they're both pretty well-lit. On Bergen there are usually people around between Underhill and Washington because of the bodegas at either end and the bus stops at Washington.

  • And this is the reason why you can't ride your bike on the sidewalk. Some punk ruins it for everybody. Another example of the few ruining it for the many.
  • I'm never out walking by myself at night anymore, but when I used to I would often walk down the middle of the street against traffic so I could move to the side when a car came. Obviously I am talking about the sides streets, not Vanderbilt or Underhill.

Those are the street I use. The only thing I wish is that the side of Bergen where the homes are (not the school) would trim their trees a little bit.

Sorry for the delay. It was late, around 1:30 AM on a Tuesday night (9/5). No bikes. Two young men. Not the most pleasant situation, but the everyone in the neighborhood was really helpful (calling the police, helping me to a bench). Thank you for that!
  • You'll want to walk down St. Marks. We have this man who stands on the corner (on Classon) and does acrobatics, and I don't think anyone will want to bother you with a witness right there.

He stands there all day and all night.
