A cheap tipper?

  • in my opinion, a place that charges for delivery doesn't get tipped. FD charges what..$5? If that money doesn't go directly to the delivery guys, then the delivery guys should work elsewhere. But I don't use FD very often.. not in 6 months at least, and I never really order heavy things. Sounds like most of you tip them, so that one's fuzzy.

But restaurants who charge delivery.. definitely dont tip.. those guys could work for anyone else.

As for regular delivery, though, I tend to overtip. Over 20, at least 4+change, usually around $5. I'm a 4th floor walkuper too, and I always feel bad that they have to come up. If I'm too lazy to go out, they're doing me a BIG service bringing it to me.. no, they're not filling my water glass all night but its a different service. Often times delivery guys don't get a paycheck at all (like restaurant servers) so if the food is worth it, I'm happy to pay someone to bring it to me.

Anyway, We have a lot of stairs to climb and I can't imagine they make a lot of $ as delivery people so I always try to tip according to how much is in my wallet, with a minimum of $5. The more I can tip, the better everyone feels. Sounds like we may want to start upping our tip on the Fresh Direct guys tho...they don't seem to care much when our food goes missing. Sorry for making you feel bad Kosher - but tipping is good karma.

But I don't tip on Pick-Up food either.
Man, I hope that my wife doesn't join the message boards just to tell me, "I told you so!" :P  :P

Good point, Fresh Direct recently upped the delivery fee. Now it's at least 5 bucks to deliver to Brooklyn. I'll still tip them, but it's not going to be a ton of extra cash!
Also, I am sure a lot of places that charge delivery fee don't pay that to the delivery person, but at what point can we finally say that shit's not our fault. We keep accepting the fact that we're getting screwed and we turn around to thank the person fucking us. Seems to me that creates an endless cycle so we can just get taken advantage of more and more. We need to uprise
  • wow, i'm really cheap. i rarely tip more than $3.
  • i have mixed feelings about tipping FD. (NB: i live in an elevator building)

their drivers are not really the same as food delivery people; they're paid to be drivers. i wouldn't tip the UPS guy, after all, because the cost of paying the driver is part of what the base price covers. (vs. a restaurant that costs the same for pick up and for delivery -- i get that the delivery guys aren't getting much money from the restaurant.)

i do tip FD most of the time, especially in crappy weather, but i'm not so very convinced that i should....
  • We need someone who works for Fresh Direct to inform us what the deal is with their delivery guys getting paid. I too have a sense that this is not the same situation as a restaurant delivery guy just working for tips. Considering how many deliveries are on a truck and how fast these fellows generally move (in and out in 90 seconds) if you added up all those $3 and $5 tips given could be a nice bonus every day.
  • FD delivery guys sometimes blast out of my apartment so quickly I don't even have time to hand them a tip, which I always think is strange. it seems like they might not really expect one?

    Exactly.

    Exactly.

I'm guessing it's because of that one driver who physically harrassed/assaulted a woman over not tipping him.

  • While FD did raise their delivery fee, it is "included" if you do that $100 up front (take $50 off thingy). I order from them A LOT as our only grocery store totally skeeves me out. The one and only time I went there (to buy canned tuna), my neighbors saw me and asked where I was going. When I told them the Bravo market, they all screamed collectively, "NOOOOOOOOOOO!" I thought, how bad can it be? It's canned tuna. It was worse. I left the store empty handed and resigned myself to weekly FD orders. Sorry. That was a bit of a tangent.
  • I just give a standard $3 for food delivery whether it was $5 or $30 worth of food. It's pretty much the same work for the delivery person. As for Fresh Direct, they charge $5 to deliver, so I don't feel the need to give them huge tips, but still end up giving a couple bucks.
  • i tip food delivery people more than bartenders, who I've been trying to undertip recently, it's my new thing I'm into.
  • Food delivery for two people, I'd tip 4.00 to 5.00. He only has to go up the stoop. Now the C-Town guy gets 10.00. We're on the 4th floor and we get 1or2 2.5 gallons of poland spring water, box of cat litter, lots of cat food, detergent, etc. Very heavy stuff.
  • i like to tip people a lot when others are watching, i think it really impresses people, esp. girls. also, a good trick is to give a pile of 1 dollar bills, so it looks like alot more money than it really is.
  • eggcream u have inspired me to deliver to your house!!

$10 as a tip? Good for you!!
  • How to calculate tip, the scientific way:

    1. round up
    2. add three bucks
    3. if a bigger order than usual, add another buck
    4. if raining, snowing, or beastly hot, add one more
    5. if you're orderinf from anywhere more than 10 blocks away, add another buck
    6. if it's a place you order from often, and they'll remember who you are, add another dollar for spit-in-my-soup insurance

    Presto!
  • agree about rounding up. and extra in bad weather.
  • Just read that article, Livetotravel. That's appalling! I hope the restaurant loses bigtime.

This is what happens when most of the work force is illegal. They get shaken down, or in some cases relegated to serfdom. The below min wage seems standard for all delivery and service people. The bosses figure they'll make their cash in tips.
  • We got 1 large pizza w/ onions and black olives, and 4 cans of soda last night. Bill? $21.70ish - I gave $26.

We order from them regularly. I thoght it was a good tip.
B/f frowned at me but enjoyed his spit-free pizza.

and yes, we had a magnet.

    I would have given $24 or $25.

    4 cans of Soda? Really?

We bought four cans but drank one between the two of us. The other three are there so we don't have to go out and buy any. They'll prolly sit in the fridge for a while till either of us has a craving. Usually, we don't drink much soda. Oh and the pizza people forgot to ask us if we had a magnet, and we DID get it from the right place this time... :)

    this is my tip-scale exactly.
  • cheflady wrote: What do you guys think about tipping when you get take-out and pick it up yourself? They dont' have to do anything but pack the food....?
if there's a tip jar i'll occasionally throw in a dollar or two
