Car Demolished---hit and run on St. Johns Place

On Sunday morning, at about 7:30am, a honda-type car parked on St. Johns (with Washington Place) was hit, while parked. I didn't see the hit, but witnessed the damage. To say the car was totaled is an understatment. It looked like the car had been hit at high impact. The car had been slammed into a tree and just smashed to pieces. The car behind it was damaged too---a real sad sight. I really felt bad for the unsuspecting person who had to come out and see his car all jacked up. The car is gone now, but I've heard that there has been a rash of automobile vandalism in the neighborhood.

  • There are lots of huge SUVs travelling at high speed throughout Brooklyn. In the suburbs, these behemoths go flying off the road, in the city they smash into parked cars.
  • Funny you should say that. One neighbor commented that people have been using St. Johns Place as a quasi-race track since its been re-paved. Another suggested that an SUV must've run into the car at high speeds because the damage was so bad.
  • How do you know that it was hit and run? Just because the car was parked doesn't mean that the driver didn't stop and call police.
  • A man who has an apartment facing the street on St. Johns said he heard a loud crash around 7:30am. When he looked out of his window, he saw a car speeding away. He said he'd been looking out of his window all morning so he could tell the owner of the car what happened.

There are a lot of people driving fast driving all kinds of cars, not just SUVs.

Yeah, but it's more fun to heap blame on SUVs...
  • I blame shopping carts.

Well, I am one of those "Evil SUV owners" and I haven't had a single accident in 20+ years of driving.
  • I blame strollers.
  • Let's blame the vehicle and not the driver. Why does society transfer blame to objects when the blame belongs on people? Place the blame where it belongs.
  • I LOVE SUVs..Why do they get such a bad rap?? They're roomy, rugged, and fun to drive.

Well, I don't care too much one way or another, but as far as "fun to drive" is concerned, I'll take a 911 (or even a GTI) over something that handles like a cross between a 747 and a sponge.

SUV's aren't really the best choice for off-roading either, but that's ok - most of them will never even see a dirt road.

EDIT: I happened to do a search on "hate SUV" and came up with this - it may help to answer your question: http://www.alternet.org/story/14839/
  • My problem with SUVs is that they're totally impractical for the average use that they see - same with a lot of pick-ups. In my experience, most SUV buyers are all about image.
  • As a smaller woman, I found driving me SUV lots of fun. I had a tank---an 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (The Woody) and bully drivers (like taxicabs and aggressive male drivers) would get outta my way when they saw me coming. Here's a funny story: About 4 years ago, I was in the city rushing to a hair appointment. I got into a small road rage incident with a guy in a older model sedan. As he went to cut me off, I mistakenly side swiped him and my Woody ripped off his rear view mirror. There was no damage to my car, but he was missing a mirror. So, he gets all in my face and I flag the police. The guys starts screaming and yelling that I ripped off his mirror and demands a police report. I calmly tell the police that I'm on the verge of missing my hair appointment and they let me go. Ah, the joys of an SUV. The car was also a huge gas guzzler and it broke down constantly, but I really, really loved it. It was a real tank!

Heh. Never mind that article I linked, you wrote it in about 10% of the space.

EDIT: I reread and realize you are joking. Sorry
  • Drano...I can't help but laugh after reading the article you linked too. I guess I'm of having once been the little woman in the big truck. BUT, who likes to be cut off by other drivers? I liked the Woody because I could pile in all my girlfriends and head to the beach on the weekends. I have a small apartment and liked to store stuff in the truck, too. And my dog loved it. I hope I'm forgiven, as I drive a 4-door sedan now....

That's what mini vans are for, but with better cargo room and better fuel effeciency. Oh... but they're uncool.
  • gotta love the thread hijack....

    SUV song

No worries. I don't get too worked up about this issue, I was just trying to answer your initial question.
  • I had an 86 Grand Wagoneer too. It was my first car and I loved that damn thing.
  • I too once devoted much love (and repair costs) to a woody Wagoneer...fun to drive but after it got slept in a few times and side-swiped over in Fort Greene, it finally died in long term parking at JFK. I gave it to the tow company in return for not having to pay to have it towed and a ride home.
  • I blame my friend in Mpls who just bought a H3.

In fact, I'm going to blame him for a lot now.
  • I had the engine rebuilt on my Woody (to the tune of $4000) and it still break down every two weeks. The truck finally broke down on Canal street during rush hour. Triple-A came and got me and I finally gave the thing to charity for the tax write off. I loved the damn thing, but I never knew if it was going to start up or not. It was a finicky truck and more than a gas guzzler, it was a money burner! But, I look back on my days with it fondly...
  • Woody Wagoneers were real SUVs. Behemoths that were made for the rugged rural apaces. Rarely were they seen in an urban setting. Nowadays SUV's are nothing more then making the satement that you really don't give a shit about anything but yourself.

There is no good reason to owning one in NYC. Especially a Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade. If you own one of those it's probably because your so fat you can't fit in any other car.

    +1

There's no reason to own such a big vechile in a city... unless perhaps you're compesating for something?

  • wow- the person that owns that car is not a happy camper, yeah?
I have an ancient (1992) car that dozens people have put dents in over the years, but at least she keeps on going. But if THAT happened to me, it'd be all over. No collision coverage on cars older than ten years.
  • Took me a moment to realize that there were two different cars! I was thinking, "why does that Toyota have Honda hub caps?
  • Reckless driving like that is gonna get someone killed. A pedestrian. A couple making out or 'gettin cozy' in the back seat. A dog (who'd most likely be shitting on the sidewalk with no one to clean up after it..... This is St. Johns "doo doo" Place, after all) Fa real.
  • Oh yeah, that's an ouchy. I'm guessing it was a real truck.
