Car Demolished---hit and run on St. Johns Place

  • Holy crap. I don't think I'm going to walk down St. John's unless I have to in the near future. That's terrifying.
  • If there is any justice in this world, the insurance company will refuse to pay and open an investigation as to whether or not the owner is commiting insurance fraud by failing to register and insure the car in NY instead of Washington.
  • I learned to drive in a 1983 Jeep Cherokee Laredo. My mom still has it, she's a plantaholic and used it to haul soil and plants around. Plus it was really great for the dogs. I haven't driven in awhile but I do prefer being higher off the ground. I hate driving a car because I can't see as well. I love that Jeep though, it was a steel monster. Some guy side swiped me in LI many years ago. His old station wagon had a huge dent along the passenger door but the Jeep had a teeny dent.

Here are a couple pics I took of a car on 4th Street 2 years ago (I think). Same thing:

Of course, I didn't get any pictures of the other side because I'm an ass apparently.

i was visiting my home town this past week, and i rented a car. i'd asked for a compact, but they ended up giving me a dodge durango instead.

it was lots of fun on the country roads -- i could see over the hills, had plenty of pick-up, and felt invincible, though the tipping sensation on the curves reminded me how top heavy these ridiculous beasts are.

HOWEVER. it was terrifying to be around other cars and especially children. i could see great in front of me, but you could have put an entire kindergarten class in my blind spots behind and to the side. i was so sure i was going to hit a dog or child that i made my friend get out and spot me in parking lots sometimes. on the highway, i would lose sight of cars i was passing for so long that once i thought the car must have exited -- luckily i didn't get back over right away, since he was just beside me.

i love driving trucks, but give me my little old ford probe (R.I.A. -- Rest In Arkansas) over a big stupid SUV any day. the people and dog and luggage we tooled around the country with would have fit fine in that car, it could go faster on curves, and i could see what i was doing.

and i could STOP. i couldn't believe the amount of braking distance i needed at any speed over 15 mph. real safe. thank god nobody ran in front of me or got in an accident in front of me (which has happened and which i was able to avoid in my car.)

oh, and did i mention the $100 on gas in ONE DAY of moderate wandering?

and the dirty looks i got in my liberal hometown -- i deserved them.

yes. of all the things in this world that deserve justice, this is it.

Were the people of this forum not bitching a few weeks ago about all of the people that have out of state plates? I remember a lengthy conversation about how they take advantage of the system and how they should be targeted for parking tickets. Now ain't karma grand.
  • Well, if this city had resident parking most of those out of state plates would have to choose between paying less insurance and paying for a parking space.

But thqat will never happen, and cracking down on people with outof state plates will never happen either.

    .

Maybe this person is merely visiting?
  • Yeah they drove all the way from Washington State so they could visit the great borough of Brooklyn, for three years.
  • sweet tea, I'm sure you're right. I'm not a good judge of anything car related. I've only driven my mom's old Jeep (and a Ford Bronco 2) and it was pretty easy to see everything in the Jeep. The Bronco was another story, I could hardly see around me, the windows were small and it was too high.

Why the snide remark? If these people are indeed confirmed residents, it certainly wasn't implied on this thread.
  • Assume first, ask questions later.

oh, certainly, a jeep is A LOT smaller and more manageable than the monstrosity i was wielding this weekend. i didn't mean to say you were wrong about that car, i was just shocked at how ridiculously unsafe the urban assault vehicle i just had was.

I love the parking ticket on the windshield. Talk about adding insult to injury.
  • I know! Like the owner of the car did that on purpose? You can clearly see that the car was hit, the tree root is jammed up under the door. I sure hope they didn't have to pay that ticket.

My parents have driven out from SD before, that's gotta be at least 1600 miles, not as far as WaState, but still, people DO come to visit Brooklyn and can have out of state plates. I don't see anything in the photos to lead me to believe they've been here 3 years now. I'm just sayin.
  • I was the asshole in a green sweatsuit on a speedbike who rode by with my mouth open Sunday...

Damn that sucks. Parking garage for me

Strollers? You blame people with strollers? What the Hell does that mean?
  • The same guy who witnessed the after-crash (on first floor of EVEN-side building) told me it wasn't an SUV at all, but a four-door silver Sedan... which had little damage and drove off.
By the way, he mentioned he'd not CALLED THE POLICE since HE DIDN'T SEE IT HAPPEN (I did call 911, around 8:30am, they were not interested and told me to call the precinct, I had to leave).

Interesting to note in this context (was it an insurance scam?):
    - *TWO* cars were damaged (not just this one)
    - Last month the windows of FOUR or FIVE cars on the opposite (ODD) side had their windows SMASHED on purpose (front and back, all street-side).
    - The month before that a car at the corner was severely damaged (another hit & run)
    - About four months ago a car hit FOUR cars, again on the odd-side of saint johns, (same spot, opposite side)

My car is in the garage now...

PS Yes SUVs suck, or perhaps it's just those who drive them... I've seen several of you morons go 'four-wheelin' on the heaps of snow two weeks ago, and DAMAGING other cars because you could not control yours either... (Vandy and St. Johns) You just feel big... don'tcha?!?! May the GAS prices rise to the heavens...

maybe its the garages in the area ;) telling folks not to park out in the streets. call me a conspiracy nut, sounds like a good business plan.
  • The car windows may be the result of the neighborhood smasher:
