  • Some of your mods are right now at beast, wondering the same thing. We saw at least 3 groups of cop
  • it's at Dean and Flatbush. Loads of cops and an ambulance or two. I saw a guy getting arrested as I was there right when the cops showed up. I hear people talking "shot" and "stabbed" but have no clue what happened.
  • Cop shot-Flatbush and Dean
  • technically it was Park Slope. It was on the Slope side of Flatbush. Not trying to claim more crimes in PH than there are!

Just biked by there on my way home from the gym. Streets are blocked off from 5th ave to the east side of Flatbush. Several blocks of Flatbush are blocked off as well. I heard from a reporter that a cop was shot, "but it's no big deal. He's ok". Um. yeah. Well, I'm happy he's ok, but it's still a big deal. People shouldn't get shot. Jeez. Beat reporters.

    Anyone else know what happened?
  • Whoa. Any more details?
  • See the thread above you on the helicopters, although there isn't that much more info there.
  • I went biking around 7 in Prospect Park... there were cops everywhere just combing the place. I'm glad they found the guy.
  • The closed off 7th Avenue when I was there around 9pm.
  • Um, apologies. I have a new cellphone and thought I could post from it, but that didn't work too well. D'oh.

Anyway, we saw loads of cops rushing west on Bergen in marked and unmarked cars, and at least two helicopters.
  • Shot in the ankle. He's at NY Methodist.
Guy was smokin a joint on the corner of dean and flat. Cops undercova went to get the guy, he ran, cops struggled with him, Blood caps cop in ankle. He's got a record, yo, and he's only 24.
    fuckin' a.
  • I was just walking home from the beast gathering (after a horrible ride home - that'll teach me to take the client paid towncar) and ran into, at the corner of st. johns and washington, three cops 'chatting' with a nabe guy and using flashlights to search the area. this was the .... northwest corner.
  • Best wishes and a speedy recovery for the brave officer!
  • Subject: eye witness rumor

    eye witnesss rumor from neib/resident(s)

balmy night, car pulled over, etc., cop possibly shot with own gun in struggle, many cop cars, many copters, flatbush in lock down for hours, related/non-informative ny1 blurb

[sic] "imagine this... with an arena... brooklyn not prepared"
  • Wow that is F-ed up!

I was walking by that area just before then on my way home from work but guess it happened just after.

Hope the officer is okay. That is really crazy/sad.

did you guys hear about this? what would possess a guy to not only scuffle with two cops but then take out a gun and shoot one, all over him getting caught with a joint? what a dumbass.

oh, on the news last night they referred to Flatbush & Dean as 'park slope.'

Man Faces Attempted Murder Charges For Shooting Police Officer
    March 28, 2007

A man faces attempted murder charges in the shooting of a police officer in Brooklyn last night.

The shooting happened just after 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Dean Street in Park Slope.

Police say two officers were on patrol when they saw a man smoking what appeared to be marijuana. They chased the man down and tried to arrest him.

Police say the man then shot Officer Rory Mangra in the ankle. The injury was not life-threatening.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said it was another example of illegal guns doing damage on the streets.

"We just have to get guns out of the hands of people with long criminal records,” said the mayor. “This perpetrator tonight has a long criminal record. Somebody sold him a gun. We're very lucky that all that happened tonight is a police officer getting shot in the ankle from which he will recover. It could've been you, me, or the police officer that got killed tonight."

In addition to the attempted murder charge, 23-year-old Kinglsey Newland faces assault, weapons and drug possession charges.
  • It was Park Slope. I was there. It was on the Slope side of Flatbush.

If he had a gun on him, he knew that he was gettin' pinched for it, no matter what - they're going to pat him down when he's been caught smokin' a joint. I think that there's a minimum of 3 years if you get caught with a loaded gun, no matter what, so he's probably tryin' like hell to get away... not showing the greatest judgment, but what do you expect?
  • Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
  • but it is gonna go harder on him for shooting the cop, right? say, what is the cop protocol for dealing with a walking pot-smoker? would they have necessarily frisked him? do you just get a fine or do they take you in?
  • Lots of local coverage on this today in the NYT, The Post, Daily News, NY1, etc...most refer to the location as Park Slope...
  • yes it's certainly the park slope side of flatbush, but just for consistency's sake, shouldn't the times refer to it as "downtown brookyln"?

Definitely would have frisked him - gotta see if he has more with the intent to distribute, at the very least. There's no way that they wouldn't have found the gun; he knew that, he tried to run, when that didn't work, he got more desperate...

As far as whether it'll be worse for him now... I would imagine so, but who knows what kind of rap sheet he had before? Maybe he was screwed either way and figured that he had nothing to lose?

1.) He saw them and ran, so it's not a walking-pot-smoking arrest. 10 to 1 he's on parole, or probation at the very least, so he couldn't let them find the gun.
2.)He shot a cop, so it's automatically an attempted murder. Even if he was shot in the ankle. Point a gun. At a cop. And its attempted murder.
3.) He has an extensive record (source: 1010 WINS), so I bet he gets 25 ta life. 15 good behavior.
  • Have fun in prison, jackass.
    Hope it was worth it.

Dude, smoke weed at home, not on f*cking FLATBUSH next to the police station.Christ.

    Darwin was right.

A Sad story, but it is one less IDIOT to deal with on the street. Surely, there are others.
  • i thought i read that his record consisted of previous marijuana arrests.
that might still be considered extensive but is hardly on the order of magnitude of carrying a gun and shooting a cop (or anyone else).
  • good point 7180, walking around smoking a joint in plain view of cops is not particularly encouraging in terms of the guy's judgment. i know it's moot but i wonder if it occured to him just to ditch the gun while he was trying to run. i dunno how the laws work, is it like getting caught smoking in high school (can't bust you unless they see the cig in your hand so you just toss it at their approach)?

evolutionarily too dumb to survive. let's hope he didn't breed yet!

Maybe it's time to review Chris Rock's simple rules on how to not get your ass kicked by the police:
