Why is there a NYPD helicopter circling Bartel Pritchard Sq?

Comments

  • i wish i knew, because it's been sitting directly over my head for a while now and i want to scream. and every time i think it's gone it comes back
  • Between the construction going on near me and that helicopter, I am in a super pissy mood. Make it stop!!!!
  • Ya, it's weird. It was standing still for a few minutes right outside my apt then it started circling again. Annoying. My dogs are barking at it.
  • jodi, you must be near me... because there were a few minutes it was standing still RIGHT above me
  • Rogue helicopter pilots got ya down?

Take it to your local Community Board / City Council meeting.

    This guy did:

In fact, I could easily see a Brooklyn version of this...helicopters, Atlantic Yards + arena, Brooklyn Brewery beverage controversy.

Would make for some good laughs to re-enact this locally.

  • Sorry, but where is this?

South Slope tends to get a lot of helicopters. I am woken up by them at least once a week.
  • Bartel Pritchard Square. at first the helicopter kept flying low over the baseball fields in the park and directly outside. then it seemed to target something specific and hover over the square for quite awhile. i've been wondering what it was that caught their attention myself.
  • I heard they were hunting down a marauding gang of masked racoons.

    John Ife
  • I saw it hovering right over 15th Street. Don't know why. Felt like I was LA this morning.
  • this is just hearsay, mind you, but i was speaking with other folks in the nabe this afternoon. they told me that this morning police received a call from someone saying they saw a man on a rooftop with a gun/rifle. don't know if it's true, but it would explain the 'copter and the hovering.
  • Depending on the wind, my house is directly under the flight path to LGA.

    Folks, we live in NYC.
  • Look, I've got no problem with high-flying airplanes, but those NYPD/Homeland Security copter jockeys can't seem to get enough of the ominous hovering and endless looping around various neighborhoods. I think it's just them playing with their zoom camera pods (look on the nose of the chopper for the ball-shaped thing), FLIR, and from what I've heard, radiation detectors. Going over the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridges on foot or bicycle can get pretty hilarious—I've seen no less than three choppers hovering over the Brooklyn Bridge all at once, and once I and a string of other bicyclists were paced by a helicopter no more than 30 feet overhead while going over the Manhattan Bridge bike path. Once we hit the other side, he swung around, waved the camera pod at us and zoomed off. Seen "Blue Thunder"? It's a voyeuristic game for these guys and their big expensive taxpayer-provided toys.

WTF do they think they'll find in Park Slope, guys with rifles or shoulder-fired missiles on rooftops? The radioactive glow from hospital cancer wards?

I think they need to know that no one finds their thudding whup-whup-whup reassuring, just as I think not too many New Yorkers are reassured by cops standing around with automatic weapons. It's just a saber-rattling show of force.
  • You know, with respect to helicopter noise more generally, I think the increase in helicopters last year in Park Slope had to do with the new helicopter service from JFK to midtown. Park Slope is right under their usual flight-path. (Or at least `was' ... I haven't been hearing and seeing them every few hours like I used to.)

maybe they're looking for naked sunbathers, or people making out on rooftops . . .

  • Does anyone realize that Park Slope is surrounded by not so stellar neighborhoods and when they are hovering on the southern side of the park they have a bigger view. Come on people Think. Is life so boring that you don't have anything else to complain about? The cops are doing their jobs. If they weren't, you would be bitching about that. Just cause we live in chichi frou frou park slope doesn't mean we live in a bubble...park slope is a neighborhood in a CITY. There is still crime and if you are so deluded to think it doesn't touch park slope, you are a muggers DREAM of a victim...clueless.
  • Calm down newbie.
  • forget to wear your anti-hostility hat today, Drama Queen? holy mackerel!
  • Huh. And I always thought those helicopters belonged to one of the news stations, showing the traffic on the Prospect Expressway/Gowanus.
