Uncle Louie G's: Highway robbery!
Subject: Uncle Louie G's: Highway robbery!
I got my first pint of the season from Uncle Louie G's yesterday. Chocolate Peanut Butter... mmmmm.......Unfortunately, they've raised their prices. A lot. A pint of ice cream went from $4.75 to $6.00! I think that's a little out of control, especially since the high school girls that staff the place never pack the ice cream; you're lucky if you get two small servings out of a pint.
I have to say, I love ULG, but I ain't paying $6 for any pint of ice cream.

WTF? That's a steep increase. Uncle Louie can stick it.

Hey he needs more money for gas to drive his fat butt around in his Hummer. :roll:8thandPrez wrote: I got my first pint of the season from Uncle Louie G's yesterday. Chocolate Peanut Butter... mmmmm.......

Yea - pretty outrageous, considering a pint at Haagen Dazs costs $5 and Ben and Jerrys goes for like $3.50.
-
yeesh. that is a lot of money. berk.

Isn't that ice cream made in small artisinal batches with fresh ingredients? Have you priced the cost of raw ingredients like cream, etc, then added labor {high school though it may be} recently? I'm just saying that no-one raises prices unless they have to, and the price of everything has gone up up up. Is it necessary to insult the guy personally? :? Locally made goods made in small batches are NEVER the same price as the commercially made equivalent, nor should it be. I don't mind paying an extra dollar for that, in fact I think it's cheap.
Ever taken a look at Rick's Pickles or the spinoff Wheelhouse {I think it's called}? Quite pricey and also extremely delish. NOTHING like commercial pickles.
I'm going to have nightmares starring that fat clown head, OMG> -
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!!
So the way I deal with this situation is I accept that this will not be the ice cream I buy every time I eat ice cream. It IS to expensive for that. I don't need to do a valuation of wholesale vs. retail costs blag, blah. So every now and again I will have it and not bitch about the price.
So be it. -
I appreciate the care that goes into every plate at Rosewater, and never thnk about the cost.. --I love Cocoa Bar and Chocolate Room sweets, etc..but Louie G. is a fat fk who drives around in a Hummer, and WHY IN THE WORLD would I pay for his gas? His "footprint" is huge, and THAT"S what yer payin for. And, I'm sorry, but guess what, ICES ARE SUGAR AND WATER. SUGAR AND WATER and yer payin $3.00 for it!! The ice cream? Who cares--I'll stick with Ronnybrook. They're pure.

Really? You think no person, company, or corporation has ever raised prices on anything just so they can make more money? Last I checked, making money was the purpose of doing business.
Besides, the price of ice cream ingredients really hasn't gone up that much lately, certainly not since last year. (I have priced them, 'cause I buy most of them frequently: heavy cream, milk, and sugar.) Nor has the price of labor skyrocketed since last summer.
Look, you don't need to defend the guy. He can charge what he wants and take his chances in the marketplace. Me, I loves me some Haagen-Dazs. I think Louie G's is too sweet, and besides, I'll be damned if I pay super-duper-premium prices for ice cream only to walk out and be confronted with "Hey, Schmuck! Your ice cream money just helped me pay for the most conspicuously extravagant lane-hogging car ever!"
-
$6 is insane for a pint of ice cream. And there are far better ice creams than Louie G's.
However... relating whether his ice cream is worth it to the size of his car is so stereotypically Park Slope.
$6 would be BS even if he drove a Prius. And if it were $3 a pint I'd buy it even if he drove a tank mounted with puppy-killing lasers. -
ha! I'm getting a Prius with Puppy-Killing Lasers and?-----------

Hey. Fat Louie changed last year to a vanilla-colored Escalade.
Wonder what he'll lease this year? -
Say what you will about my Uncle Louie's vehicles of choice (which probably has more to do with the integrity of the chassis than anything) but his taste in music is beyond reproach. Love the 70s love songs he rocks in the summer!

Wow.... a complaint about the price of chocolate peanut-butter pints morphed into a debate about ULG's carbon footprint. God, I love message boards.
At any rate, I'm with Brook Lynn Knight. It's ridiculous to state that people only raise prices "when they have to." I mean COME ON. The guy's trying to make a quick buck.
Plus, a quick check of the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the price of milk and eggs has been flat since '04. -
Speaking of which, a frozen confection that requires constant refrigeration is hardly carbon-neutral. I suggest chewing on some hemp seeds and stevia leaf for dessert.

Of course, you're referring to locally -- as in, Park Slope -- grown stevia and hemp. Anything else will put Miami 10 feet under in no time. -
Save your money and drive to Corona Queens for the Lemon Ice King of Corona. Uncle Louie's doesn't compare.
-
Lulz! Actually, I don't care about the guy's carbon footprint. I care that he's bought the most ostentatiously expensive car he can find and parked it, generally, where people see it while they're buying his products.
Now, you and I know that the CEO of Haagen-Dazs, or its parent company, probably makes enough to buy a PPW brownstone with petty cash. I know that intellectually, yet I would still avoid Haagen-Dazs if I knew that every time I walked out with a cone he would be standing outside, smirking and jingling his diamond-studded platinum Rolex in my face. Irrational, I know, but it would really cut into my enjoyment of that very expensive ice cream. It would make me feel like a sucker, instead of someone treating myself to a little luxury.
Such is the psychology of spending money on luxuries; the line between making a fun little lifestyle choice and being played for a schmuck is so very fine. -
Actually, milk prices are expected to go up 9% this year:

The article refers to retail. I wonder if the wholesalers lock in their prices in advance.
-
Legally, that's price-fixing and it's not allowed, not that this stops that sort of thing from happening. But it makes it less likely. Truth is, milk's a commodity and whoever sells it for least is the group that ultimately sets the price. Don't think there's liable to be a price war over milk.

Sounded to me like 8thandprez was referring to the futures market. Nothing illegal about that. In theory, you're correct about commodity pricing, but the milk market is subject to pretty much the same inefficiencies (subsidies, etc.) as many agricultural markets in the U.S.
I'm kinda with Brooke Lynne Knight on the vehicle issue. Knew a guy who bought a Porsche a few years back and the dummy couldn't wait to tell his customers. They were none too pleased; I guess putting a guy in a Porsche didn't seem quite as worthy to them as imagining they were putting his kids through school or whatever. It's ok to make a few bucks, but making sure everybody knows it is a no-class move. -

Rosewater is ok for brunch, but dinner is a total rip off.
I went there last night and got what I thought was going to be a venison dinner. It consisted of about 4 ounces of meat, two 1cm thick slices of yams, and about 3 ounces of kales. For $28.00. The meat was mediocre and everything else had no flavor.
I realize they mostly character to neurotic, anorexic females - but come on. I need more than 400 calories in my dinner. If you can't even make the dinner interesting, at least give me enough food I don't die of starvation.
I like them, and I seriously considered refusing to pay. But I didn't. I will NEVER eat there for dinner again however. -
When I lived over by Marine Park there was an Uncle Luigi's ice/ice cream place. Then one day I walked by and they were changing the sign to Uncle Louie G's. Pretty clever I thought to myself. I thought they must have gotten in trouble with some sort of trademark law and were just re-naming it. Was the Uncle Louie G's in PS ever called Uncle Luigi's? Also, I guess it was about 5 or maybe 6 years ago that I saw them change the name. So maybe the one in PS wasn't even there yet.

I've seen a black Escalade hovering this year . . . not sure if that's the new vehicle, but I have my suspicions.
Why would you pay $6 for crap ice cream when Mr Ben and Mr Jerry are in every deli freezer? Get gelato at Tempo Presto if you need a cone . . . SHEESH! -
I can only vouch for the chocolate peanut butter flavor, which is truly one of the best ice creams I've ever had. It's dark, dark chocolate, not too sweet, and nice, salty, real peanut butter. Insane good. I can eat a whole pint in like 5 minutes flat.
Howdy, Stranger!
