EVERYONE is blaming whites for increased rents. It is no deeper than that. This is what they have been doing throughout their entire history. If they can't buy it they will steal it. They must take it over and push everyone else out and they don't care by which means they do it. Price people out, make war, commit genocide, blow up a levee, whatever gets them their desired result. The cops work for them too. Fort Greene Park is DISGUSTING now there is a white side of the park and a black side. A white playground and a black one. When they see black kids coming on what they feel to be "their side of the park" they call the cops for no reason whatsoever. Then they wonder why people hate them.
Thats wrong on so many points

    (1) Increased rents. LANDLORDS increase rents when they think they can get away with it. LANDLORDS come in all colors. Many will raise rents when they see a high number of white people looking for an apartment, but again, it is the LANDLORDS who raise the rents.

    (2) Price people out. See above.

    (3) Make War. All nations, colors, ethnicities, and religions make war. It is a human affliction, not racial one.

    (4) Commit Genocide. See # (3). Hotel Rowanda is a telling story.

    (5) Blow up a levee. Sounds like that story could make a person rich, if they had ANY proof.

    (6) Fort Greene Park. It so happens that one side of the park is near the PJ's and has basketball courts, BBQ areas, and a kiddie park. The other side is near brownstones and has tennis courts, people playing soccer, and no designated BBQ areas. Seems to me that folks that live in the pjs or like basketball will hang out on that side of the park, and people who live in or near the brownstones who like tennis/soccer will hang out on that side of the park. I dont see the problem. I have seen a group of black kids walk through a soccer game and want to fight after being told not to do so for their own safety, but even then no cops were called. Blacks play tennis and soccer everyday, along with all other races on that side of the park. So, I just dont see what you see.

  • Guvna and Carmen, Crystal never mentioned race or commuting so stop playing the ass card; I think she like myself don't give a hot shit what color you are we are addressing the shitheads of all persuasions who don't support positive change and business. Stop putting words in peoples mouths and try to be accurate. Cystal said if you sleep and store your furniture here but don't support the businesses then leave, she never said you had to work here or you couldn't shop elswhere and she never mentioned color.

Ethnic tension in Rwanda is nothing new. There have been always been disagreements between the majority Hutus and minority Tutsis, but the animosity between them has grown substantially since the colonial period.

The two ethnic groups are actually very similar - they speak the same language, inhabit the same areas and follow the same traditions.

But when the Belgian colonists arrived in 1916, they saw the two groups as distinct entities, and even produced identity cards classifying people according to their ethnicity.

The Belgians considered the Tutsis as superior to the Hutus. Not surprisingly, the Tutsis welcomed this idea, and for the next 20 years they enjoyed better jobs and educational opportunities than their neighbours.

Resentment among the Hutus gradually built up, culminating in a series of riots in 1959. More than 20,000 Tutsis were killed, and many more fled to the neighbouring countries of Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda.

When Belgium relinquished power and granted Rwanda independence in 1962, the Hutus took their place. Over subsequent decades, the Tutsis were portrayed as the scapegoats for every crisis.

The Great New Orleans Land Grab

The 17th Street Canal levy was breeched on purpose
    by
    Ernesto Cienfuegos
    La Voz de Aztlan

Los Angeles, Alta California - September 7, 2005 - (ACN) There were numerous incidents that occurred during and immediately after Katrina struck that point to the "unthinkable". It now appears that a sophisticated plan was implemented that utilized the "cover of a hurricane" to first destroy and than take over the City of New Orleans? As the world watched the events unfolding, one could not help think that something was terribly afoot concerning the rescue by FEMA of the city's poor and predominate Black population. It seems that a well laid out plan was put into effect to grab valuable real estate from well established but poverty stricken Black families of New Orleans? What is being implemented now is nothing less than a sophisticated scheme to purge and ethnically cleanse what Whites have termed "Black and 'welfare bloated' New Orleans".

Among the most telling anomalies pointing to something terribly afoot is the gun battle, killing 5, that occurred at the breeched levy between the New Orleans Police Department and, what have now been identified as US military agents. An Associated Press report, which has now disappeared, stated that at least five USA Defense Department personnel where shot dead by New Orleans police officers in the proximity of the breeched levy. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said later that those killed were "federal contractors" on their way to "repair" a canal. The "contractors" were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain, in an operation to "fix" the 17th Street Canal, according to the Army Corps of Engineers spokesman. Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley of New Orleans later reported that his policemen had shot at eight suspicious people near the breeched levy, killing five or six.

Who were these "military agents" that were killed by the police near the 17th Street Canal breeched levy and what were they doing there? Why did the New Orleans police find it necessary to shoot and kill 5 or 6 of them? No one is saying anything and it appears that the news story has now been swept under the rug. Were these US Department of Defense personnel a Special Forces group or Navy Seals with top secret orders to sabotaged the levy? There are verifiable reports that at least 100 New Orleans police officers have disappeared from the face of the earth and that two have committed suicide. Could these be policemen that died defending the levy against sabotage by "federal contractors"?
Another telling incident that points to a "nefarious plan" is what New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said at the height of the crisis. He said publicly, "I fear the CIA may take me out!" Mayor Nagin, a Black, said this twice. He told a reporter for the Associated Press: "If the CIA slips me something and next week you don't see me, you'll all know what happened." Later he told interviewers for CNN on a live broadcast that he feared the "CIA might take me out." What does Mayor Ray Nagin know and why does he fear the CIA?

In an interview by WWL TV, Mayor Nagin complained vociferously that Louisiana National Guard Blackhawk helicopters were being stopped from dropping sandbags to plug the levy soon after it breeched. There is evidence that no repairs were allowed on the levy until after New Orleans was totally flooded!

Many civilian groups who were attempting to aid people trapped in their attics, on their roofs and at the Superdome are reporting that FEMA, other federal agents and the US military essentially "stopped" them from doing so. Convoys that were organized by truckers and carrying "food and water" were blocked by agents of the federal government on the highways and roads leading to New Orleans. The American Red Cross, in addition, encountered numerous incidents and has made formal complaints.

A private ham radio network that deployed throughout the hurricane ravished region reported that the airwaves were being "jammed" making it impossible to communicate emergency information. Churches, hospitals and other essential community groups reported that the first thing that the US military did, when they arrived, was to cut their telephone lines and confiscate communications devices. We all witnessed news reports and heard statements by flood victims concerning the behavior of the US military. Many Black families complained that military vehicles did not stop to assist them but just drove by. One news report showed military personnel playing cards inside a barrack while Black citizens were dying of thirst and hunger.

Today, it is very revealing how the federal government is handling the disaster. They want every Black out of New Orleans and those who insist on staying in their homes will be removed by force. The government, through some media, is utilizing scare tactics to cleanse New Orleans of all Blacks. They want no witnesses and this will make the "land grab" a lot easier to undertake. One scare tactic is calling the flood water "a horrid toxic soup of feces a rotting flesh of corpses". The military thugs are now getting tough with Black families that have owned their old but beloved homes for many generations. Mr. Rufus Johnson, a family patriarch who lives in the French Quarter, said in an interview, "The army has given me an ultimatum to leave or suffer the consequences of a forced eviction. I do not understand . My entire family and I survived Katrina and now they want to throw me out of the home we have had for generations". Mr. Johnson lives in a neighborhood where the flood has subsided and his home is not heavily damaged yet FEMA wants him out!

The fact that Vice President Dick Cheney is heavily involved in the FEMA operations from behind the scenes is very troublesome. Cheney and his cronies at Halliburton are in line for the lucrative contracts to "reconstruct a New Orleans".

Deals are already being made with a Las Vegas business group to construct multi-million dollar casinos in the Big Easy on prime real estate that was owned by Black families. Whites throughout history have been notorious "land grabbers". In the USA they first confiscated land that belonged to American Indians. Most of the Indians ended up in worthless tracts of land called "reservations". The largest "land grab", however, was the theft of Aztlan. This occurred soon after the Mexican-American War. In Alta California , vast "Ranchos" were stolen from the Californios through a variety of scams. A favorite ploy was to impose extremely heavy land taxes on the Mexicans and then foreclosing on the properties. The land was then given or sold at very low prices to the Forty Niners who came in large hordes to Alta California during the so called "Gold Rush" of 1849

You ASSumed that I mentioned race in response to Crystal. Where do you see that? You are wrong. Take the time to read the thread properly and you will see who is playing the "Ass" card, and who is now putting words in peoples mouths.

As for what Crystal said, that was already clear. I disagree with her completely because some people have to work long hours in other neighborhoods, so naturally they will patronize businesses close to their job. Furthermore, like Carmen said, many others visit friends, hang out, do all kinds of things in other neighborhoods during their free time - especially in the summer. Who are you guys to tell them they should leave? That is nonsense. You should be asking whether she pays her rent on time, whether she litters the streets, disturbs her neighbors, and is otherwise a destructive presence or constructive presence in the hood. Telling what sounds like a perfectly decent citizen to leave is counter productive and hardly encourages her or people like her to explore her local options. Your negativity screams loudly over the top of your supposed "support of positive change"

Shit, an absentee tenant who pays rent on time is far more helpful to the hood than someone who doesnt pay rent on time, throws garbage on the street all the time, hangs out at the bodega all day, but just happens to spend a few dollars at the local store. Do you understand now why Crystal & you sound stupid with that ridiculous rant?

I can see we are going to bore the rest of the site with this debate.

    (1) Do you blame the supply or the demand? Landlords set rents according to what they think they can get. They think they can get more when Whites show up. In many cases they are right. Do you blame the landlord for being an opportunist, or the white people for having to pay what the landlord is asking? Do you see why you have to ask questions of the landlords? Of course they are profit driven, but do they not upset you more than the takers of their offers?

    (4) Lets be clear. We can go back and forth forever on this. In the end you will see that Blacks and whites, as well as all other races have had wars over any differences with their neighbors. No race has a monopoly on genocide or war. Never had.

    (5) As for the levees, I'm not one for conspiracy theories. Something that big should have lots of proof and witnesses all over. Believe what you want.

    (6) I've lived here 2 years, been around the area going on 15 years. The park has gotten nothing but better and better compared to when I used to train in there many years ago. I havent seen police profiling in there. In fact, on several weekends I have seen large groups of black kids playing touch football without incident. I cant speak for what happens with the kids and dog owners at night, but I repeat that I dont see any harassment of the kids during the daytime, and certainly not some sort of park apartheid that you alluded to.

I couldnt care less what color the nannies are. I'm just happy that people can find work.
  • If you people are really so into OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR CULTURE like you claim, where were you at BAMAFRICA and the WBLS 4th of July weekend festival? I was there. I didn't see any of you there.

Yikes, annoyed. You're sure as heck living up to your name.

I am a white man, and I'm sorry.

    There. I said it.

You can go ahead and blame me for everything. My ancestors (not Belgian, per your later post) arrived after slavery though, so you can't pin that one on me.

I'm sorry I was priced out of the neighborhood I was living in, and was “forced” to move here, where my very existence drives up your rent. My very existence is driving up my rent too - how messed up is that?

I'm sorry I don't frequent the restaurants you love so much. I'd love to go out more, but I'm not made of money (this continues to be shocking for a white man, I know). I experiment with restaurants all over our neighborhood. Like Kush. I love that place. It's not French.

On a related note, I'm sorry I ask my grocer to stock things I like to buy, so I can keep spending money in my/our neighborhood, rather than having to go elsewhere. I'm not trying to force my diet upon you. Honest.

I don't live next to the park, so I’m not as aware of this as you, but if there is a white side and a black side, I agree - that’s f*&#ed up.

The question is what do we do about this? I’m frankly quite sick of all this “us vs. them” crap on the FG/CH/BS boards, so I registered and thought to add something positive to the conversation. Now I’m not an activist. I don’t pretend that we’ll all find a way to harmoniously get together and organize some black/white event and get all warm and fuzzy feelings and live happily ever after. But we’re strangers, and strangers suspect one another of the worst. No matter where you live or your color.

Let’s stop being strangers. Pick a bar/restaurant and let’s meet up for a beer, a meal, whatever. No agenda. No race baiting. Just getting to know one another and taking a small step to improve our community.

That happens all over though. As demographics change, store product offerings change too or else the store will lose business and eventually close. Used to able to get great pasta in Canarsie, but now all you can get is West Indian food. The italians moved out, and the West Indians moved in. The food followed the movement. It doesnt always happen that way, but if here is any different then it sounds like a local entrepreneur can fill a need for provisions popular with Africans. It would sure be a refreshing change to all of the wine shops and salons that are popping up :)

Tis YOU who sounds stupid as well as self righteous and arrogant.
Personally I and most other people I know wish you would all leave. We would have a huge party.

like an unchecked cancer ,hate corrodes the personality and eats away it s vital unity.
hate destroys a man s sense of values and his objectivity.it causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and ugly as beautiful ,and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true
  • annoyed wrote: [quote=MY HEART BELONGS TO BK] No ones blaming whites for increased rents
Wow Annoyed that's awesome add more hate to the pot. Now I'm not in total disagreement with you however, EVERYONE IS NOT BLAMING WHITES FOR INCREASED RENTS. EVERYONE DOESN'T HATE THEM. I am BLACK AND I'M FREAKIN PROUD however, let me ask you this question. In order for a neighborhood to be gentrified it must first meet the criteria of bringing new residents in. Why in the hell for all these years Bedstuy, Clinton Hill, Ft. Greene, Williamsburg, Harlem etc. etc. were not properly developed and made into desirable communities by the residents who grew up and lived there all these years? Answer that. Is it because we don't open our own businesses in our community? Is it because we don't spend our money in our own communities with our people? Is it because we settle and don't complain when nasty and trifling people litter and throw garbage all over the sidewalks and streets and leave it there? Hell just a few years ago whites wouldn't step a foot in Ft. Greene with all of the crime and drug trafficing that went on. Now look at it. When are we gonna STOP COMPLAINING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR COMMUNITIES BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE? When? Hell you can sit back and respond to this as many times as you like but when are you gonna do something about it? When are you gonna march? When are you gonna boycott like our beloved warriors and ancestors of the past. This generation kills me. We'll sit back and complain all day long but won't do a dog gone thing. It's sickening. And all they're sitting back doing is laughing at you. C'mon we come from a history of king and queens. When are we gonna start acting like it. One last thing if you don't like whats goin on in the hood anymore and you are not actively doing anything about it, sorry but you should just go. The law of attraction will eventually push you out anyway with all of the hate and negative energy you are transmitting. I'll keep you posted on a neighborhood forum I am planning to organize with local business owners. Feel better annoyed and have a blessed day :)

For the record I do not support white owned businesses unless it is a business that nobody black has in the neighborhood. I do my damndest to not support any multinational corporate business. Of course it can't be completely avoided i.e. cell phone and internet and things like that but you will not see me at Target or any of those places. We used to have alot of lovely local businesses here in fort greene like Barbara(Ties That Bind) now a nasty bagel place. Lord only knows what happened to the coconut/cane guys but all of a sudden they are gone. Thankfully 4W has managed to hang on and there is B2 which is not only a great clothing store but they train young kids about the fashion business. Moshood. Gardel. Kadel. We have opened and supported PLENTY of businesses here but whitey comes and prices everyone out. I certainly don't see any of them supporting the local businesses. I see the fresh direct trucks or see them come off the train with their numerous shopping bags. I honestly liked it much better when they were scared to come here. I could relax when I was home and in my neighborhood and not have to see them or deal with them and their shit. You are blaming it all on us. NO. 10 years ago and before if you would call the cops they wouldn't even show up. Even now if your voice sounds "black" they may or may not show up and if they do they take much longer. Whitey calls and they are here before they hang up the phone. The youth are angry because they are unfairly targeted whether or not they did anything. These people are not friendly. They showed up and brought the hate with them like they always do. What do I want to do?
TAKE BACK OUR NEIGHBORHOOD BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
  • okay...actually staying on topic:

-i'm personally sick of the litter and dog shit.
to me, it's simple: find a garbage can and clean up after your fucking dog. that or, don't let your dog shit in the middle of the street. seeing chicken bones in the middle of the street is just tacky.

    -the bodega people
actually they don't bother me too much, but do they even have a job? there's like crowds of people outside the bodega always. they've never said a thing to me and me to them, so i'm happy with coexisting, but i don't see why anyone would want to spend a 90 degree day standing in front of a bodega.

the bodega is where you run into your other people from the block and end up getting caught in conversation and then more just keep showing up. some people are sick lottery heads. some people trying to scrounge change up for a beer. some people doing whatever business they might be doing. the bodega is Brooklyn. the bodega is New York City. I love all 3 I have by my corner. PLEASE don't price out the bodegas too. The Korean stores suck.

I'm with you on the litter and the dog shit.

I'm always amazed when I see dog owners looking around like nothing is going on when their dog is crapping and they're not even gonna make a move to pick it up.

If I'm out with my dogs I will offer them a plastic bag but when I don't have my supply I feel like grabbing the owner by the scruff of the neck and shoving their nose in the pile of crap and saying "No!" "Noooooooo" but I'm told that doesn't work very well.

If you have a dog accept the fact that you have to be responsible for cleaning up after it.

Thank you. However, I am overjoyed to inform you that your huge party will have to be postponed indefinately. In fact, as annoyed as you sound, it may be me and many others who get to throw a huge party of our own when your hate finally consumes you and makes YOU leave.

You guys are comical. Do you really think this nonsense will persuade people to leave? All the people we meet in the streets have been mostly friendly and welcoming. Its only you anonymous muppets on here that want to spout racist crap and insult people. 8)

Whatever. Start by reducing black on black crime, okay? Priorities, priorities.
  • annoyed wrote: [quote=Guvna]That happens all over though.
    Africans? :?:

You think Africans dont eat cassava and pumpkin? Of course other ethnicities do too, but why the shock at Africans?
  • annoyed, i feel so sorry for you. :(

you are headed towards living the rest of your time in brooklyn hating people you don't know for pathetic reasons until you either move or die. bottom line is we new folks that love this neighborhood are not leaving. change is inevitable. man, it sucks to be you! i hope you'll open your mind and realize that the only thing you can change is yourself.

may the force be with you, neighbor!

Once people like you are not compromising my lifestyle and everyone I knows lifestyles then all is well.

Its too late for this. I have to get some sleep
  • I love pumpkins.

also I really don't care what race or nationality a business owner is. Annoyed is spewing some fascist nonsense which scares the hell outa me.

No one is forcing you to live here or anywhere. I choose to live here because I live in the USA which allows for freedom of choice and movement. Maybe one day you can forcefully segregate the races and live in your happy little dictatorship. And to note I would guess you make more money than me so stop screwing up the rent.

Part of me wholly understands annoyed's anger ... If I had flocks of outsiders invading my neighborhoods, I would probably be inclined toward the same perspective. But, I hate that all of us white people are being lumped into the same categories.

I am in an interracial, gay relationship and from day one when we started looking for a neighborhood, we knew Bedford-Stuyvesant was for us. We were both excited about being involved in the community. We are both graduate students with emphasis on issues affecting inner-city regions, he with socio-economic issues and my interest more in education and the impact of media coverage — and the lack thereof — within such areas. My studies have included copius examinations of the works by James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry and Henry Louis Gates Jr — not that I am claiming this somehow alone entitles me to move into any neighborhood of my choosing.

I come to these boards to get a pulse for the neighborhood and it can be disheartening. Yes, I am white. But am coming here with no agenda, other than to be a part of the community, to understand it better, but almost entirely because my boyfriend and I got an amazing vibe from the place. My boyfriend grew up in a similiar neighborhood in Detroit and was excited for me to experience the little joys of such a community he has enjoyed most of his life. In the end, places like Williamsburg, Manhattan and Prospect Park struck us as phony and made us uncomfortable.

Can I ever truly understand the struggles many face within the community as they get squeezed out? No, but my boyfriend and I aren't here to squeeze anyone out, rather because we feel comfortable with this place. We are both unemployed graduate students — not trust funders. I think some of the anger is righfully placed, but not all of us white faces are part of the invading masses. I am just hoping to keep things in perspective, that not every white person's case for moving to neighborhoods like Fort Greene or Bedford-Stuyvesant is so clear cut.

But I do truly relate to the anger -- much of what takes place makes me angry too, gentrification is loaded with examples of injustice. The human toll of being forced from place to place is immeasurable. But it's not always accurate to lump all newcomers, including the white ones, into the same rigid categories.

    Wow, GUY!

The energy that you expend HATING people is astronomical. Just think what you could do with that energy if you weren't wasting it all on your HATING.

Just wondering, does all your HATING bring your happiness?
