tip jars
ok. i just picked up my laundry
from the laundromat on the corner of st mark's + 4th avenue
3 asian women who don't speak english fluently work the joint
and they have a tipjar at their makeshift counter
i forgot my ticket this morning and they're always very friendly
adn they're always working hard, so i gave them a tip
but i wonder if this is a growing trend
sprouted from the tea lounge and such
should i expect to tip the next time i buy a pizza slice?

There are tip jars in a lot of pizza places these days. I'm surprised you haven't seen them.
I'm all for tipping for good service in areas where servers RELY on tips to have a decent wage, but I'm not giving a buck to somebody who hands me a slice of pizza over the counter. -
i think i'm going to start carrying a tip jar around for folks who feel compelled to comment on my appearance, ask me to smile, etc. i mean, if i'm going to smile for you, let's have a little quid pro quo, no?

That is a great idea. Actually, with the way the tip jar thing is spreading, it won't be long before we are all carrying around our own tip jars. I'm at the point where I reflexively tip pretty much everyone. I think I tipped my dentist yesterday. -
I have a tip jar on my desk at work. I won't do anything til someone puts some cash (or good quality chocolate) in that shit.

Perhaps an alternative to the failed karma system on this board would be to give each of us a virtual tip jar. It could integrate with Paypal and would surely make us all rich!
-
 that's a great idea, Prez.
i'd give ya a whole quarter in your tip jar just for the suggestion
and then rather than all those negative numbers underneath our avatars we could have little virtual jars that fill (or not) with coins hee hee! -
I don't like the whole tipping system, I'd rather increase the minimum wage or just pay a flat surcharge. I dislike having to rate someone's job performance each time I buy a cup of coffee and I feel like it puts people who work for tips in a subservient position.

Yes! Now that's some forward thinking I can fukkin' rally around. Have you ever thought about running for a political office Yavel? We could really use someone like you in Albany! -
Don't forget to tip me for reading this.

Some restaurants automatically include tips in the bills and some don't. Let's make up our minds, folks. -

Totally agree but for waitering, you do much better with tips. But I hate having to throw a dollar in for a $3.00 scoop of ice cream. I mean c'mon, pay people half way decently and don't make the customer pay the salary!! -
I remember the day when I discovered the happy pleasure of tipping generously on little tabs.
Of course that was when I was more flush. But it is a simple pleasure. -
There have been several threads on this board in the past about tipping. I read this article this afternoon and thought I'd revive one of the olde threads and post the URL for those of you who may be interested.

For the record, I tip 15-20% (usually just double the tax at restaurants), and I don't tip the jar on the counter. -
Subject: "No Tippy No Laundry!"
I would be very cautious. Those ladies are very likely part of Wun Sok, a dangerous new Asian gang that has gained sway over laundry businesses throughout the city. Mayor Bloomberg has launched a new commission to deal with the problem of the Wun Sok and their subtle brand of sudsy terror.
You will know them by their call sign . . . when you get your laundry back, is there an un-matched sock? One that is not joined to it's mate?
If so I would take it as a dire warning and be very cautious. Dont go to another laundromat in the neighborhood, for if they find out about it . . . wooooo . . . -
I always tip the laundry ladies at the laundromat at 8th Ave and 11th Street. It's not easy washing and folding my stinky clothes.

Agreed. I'm fine with walking behind the counter and handing that pizza to myself thank you very much.

If everyone deserves a tip, tips should be included in all final bills automatically like in France.
Until that happens, I'm going to put a tip jar around my neck and demand tips for every flyer that I accept as I walk down 7th Avenue.
Howdy, Stranger!
